Wild Olfactory Experience
The description of this fragrance on the website is right, you probably haven't smelled anything like this before. You see all of those notes in the description. They're all there. You've got spices, you've got resins, you've got wafts of flowers, there is smoke, there is sweetness. They aren't especially blended either. It evokes a warm, vibrant (if sometimes discordant) flow of a bustling Indian marketplace.

Gujarat is a journey. The general fragrance evolves from bitter-spicy (bitter-lime, cumin, holy basil), to floral-spicy (marigold, ginger, rose, mango), to woody-spicy (patchouli, frankincense, cardamom) , but I find that the prominent notes of each phase of this fragrance differ every time I wear it. Sometimes the notes blend together, other times I get very distinctive "wafts" of one note or another. As mentioned previously, this fragrance is an idealized. version of the experience of walking around a spice market.

To me, gujarat is the perfume equivalent of a a wild couture dress. It's a wild olfactory experience that highlights the incredible talents of Dr. Covey and 100% worth a sniff, but it's more of a special occasion fragrance (and even then, I'm not sure if I would wear this to something like a wedding, but this would be nice for an outside festival). I'd call this one solidly unisex, and despite the richness of the fragrance, I think it's best suited for hot, humid weather. Despite classifying this one as a more challenging fragrance, it's like catnip for me, I can't stop sniffing and hunting out all of the different notes.

Another one for the 'savory gourmand' category
I think this is another example of how our past experiences inform how we perceive fragrances. Take the cumin in this. I've never been the sort of person who finds cumin to be sweaty or animalic, although I know many people do. If I were to guess why, it'd be because I am a ravenous consumer of curries, and I deplore as cowards the recipes that measure their spices in tsp (or, God forbid, 1/2 tsp) amounts. So whenever I smell cumin, my brain bypasses the part of it that's able to consider and describe odor characteristics, and goes straight to "oh! dinnertime!"

Once that path gets drawn in my brain, it's hard to break out of, and the whole rest of the fragrance starts getting interpreted along those lines. There's heavy saffron in here? Oh, what a delicious biryani that must be. Fruity notes of mango and chili? What could that be other than a spicy chutney? And the cardamom, well, of course that's a cup of chai with a cracked pod at the bottom.

I'm sure that for a lot of people describing a fragrance in terms of a three-course meal (no matter how delicious) is a negative, so let me be clear that it is not for me. I not only would smell like this, I want to smell like this. Gujarat is richly warming and comforting and is another great perfume from Dr. Covey.

Beautiful stage for the oud note. It's the star here but the irresistible nature of it brings you to search for the other notes.

A spicy, floral trip to a crowded market square. Definitely smells best during the heat of summer.
