1000+ lakes wonderland
I have a lake lake house in Mazury district/Poland and from late autumn til early spring the weather is quite severe in terms of humidity. There is an old basement there, underground, it used to be a place where pottery was done, with an old klin. Now it houses bats for this hard period of the year. And this story brings me to conclusion - the basement smells exactly like Night Flyer: authentic, connoting these little creatures hanging and sleeping on dampish walls. It is also about November soil with remains of rotten leaves, light air and low sky full of steal clouds.
Night Flyer fragrance paradoxically feels me with patience and hope that from time to time one needs to stop and rest. And that long days and warm nights will come back.
This is an illustration of fin de siècle but with happy end. Circle of life.

The Fragrance Equivalent of Duct-taping a Banana to a Wall
After reading many rave reviews about the original "Bat" (now "Night Flyer), I was dying to get my hands on a sample. Imagine my excitement when it finally arrived and I had a chance to smell this world-renowned fragrance. Now picture my disappointment when the thing I smelled was one terrible note: moist dirt.

I was confused and incensed! Had I misinterpreted the reviews? Was there something wrong with my nose?

Where were the subtle notes of banana and guava?

Where was the floral?

Then I had a sudden realization: Night Flyer is nothing more than "art" in its purest form. Hear me out...

Most people expect modern art to be a photo-realistic interpretation of something beautiful; a portrait or a landscape. However, "art" in its purest form is designed to evoke *feeling*. This is why people often get outraged by art when something as ridiculous as a banana taped to a wall sells for $12,000. It angers and disgusts people because it "breaks the rules" and defies our expectations of what "art" should be. However, in evoking these feelings, it has accomplished the intended goal.

Fragrances are similar. However, we expect fragrances to NOT be a photo-realistic interpretations. We do not actually want to smell a bouquet of flowers, we want an artist's impressionistic interpretation of the ideal floral smell.

What makes Dr. Ellen Covey a true artist, is how she breaks those expectations by creating very literal and unconventional fragrances. Dr. Covey doesn't just give you an ocean scene filled with coconuts, she brings you to the ocean "warts and all" and lets you breath the briny, salty air. This is great, transportive art. But not necessarily how a person wants to smell.

With Night Flyer, you smell the whole bat cave, and that smell is as repulsive as one would expect (to my nose at least).

As much as I want to give this fragrance another shining review, I feel the need to be honest about my experience. I respect the art, but I do not think this perfume is wearable or appealing in any way. Unless you love smelling like wet soil.

Ironically, there is a glitch with Parfumo.net where, when you give a "1-star" review, the caption reads "very good." Which is exactly how I feel about this perfume. It's a terrible smell, but for what it is, it really is "very good!"

Difficult and Challenging
Night Flyer by Olympic Orchids by far the most challenging perfume I own.

In sweltering heat it melts into a kind of wet, moldy, photorealistic sweaty animal fur that is just unbearable if oversprayed. It reminisces one of an unspiced cooked pork belly skin. This happens when you misuse it as it have a nuclear potential.

In winter though it’s a completely different story. The stark animalistic element takes the back seat and what dominates is warm, ripe, almost
rotting tropical fruit aroma sitting on a damp mineral rich soil that is extremely comforting as if it awakens some ancestral instincts that reassure one of safety of a warm, sweaty and dark spot away from dangers of the world.

It is one of the most difficult but also the most praised perfume I own. I only rarely use it unless I do a lot of street roaming urban day trips and want to feel enclosed in my own cozy warm scent of a batcave and shock the general public.

It could even be a signature scent if you are bold enough to pull it off and know how to spray it gently on your clothes, because drydown is really when it shines without overpowering if you are truly into a natural soil and dirt smell after the rain - this is it.

Bat Cave Body Armor
I got mineralistic notes throughout, with some vague metallic connotations. Didn't really get a distinct banana note, but you could tell it was there as an alchemy to soften the edges of the other ingredients. That's probably why overall, the scent is not unpleasant and is rather interesting. The name is perfect, because this does seem to fit the image of what a bat cave would smell like! Albeit a well-kept and clean one. Problem is, I still don't think I'd want to smell like this except in one specific situation - when I'm in a grumpy or foul mood and want a scent that would form a little force field - something protecting and shielding me from the rest of the world. It became a skin-only scent after just an hour or so and was totally gone after around 5-6 hours.

Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes / Night Flyer
Beautiful and unique. Unique even. NICHE at your fingertips.
I think I'll invest in a batman mask, a cape ... and start sleeping somewhere tied upside down to the ceiling. An interesting combination of dark notes of earth, mold, cold, skin, musk and finally - banana (not sweet, but young, unripe). Something amazing.
The new BAT Zoologist compared to this one (Ms. Covey's original work) is a light brush of an immature bat's wing. NIGHT FLYER is a dark grotto with lots of mature and experienced bats all over the summer. I recommend

Initially dusty fruity-sweet, this challenging, yet unique spicy green-earthy Fall fragrance settles to a slightly animalic dry-woody base.

Rotting fruit, animal fur, mold. I gave a sample vial to a friend, and now they’re refusing to try any more fragrances — still traumatized.

Smells like wet dirt. Points for creativity and realism, but otherwise just awful.

Sour mineralic, damp green banana/papaya. Dank and cool. Warms up fermenting fruit and fizzy light spiced musk. Stays sour moist and crunchy
