The Blackbird in the Green Woods
Blackbird is a pillar amongst its woody aromatic counterparts; fruity, intense, resinous, deep, and utterly daring. The black juice inside, aside from the fact that it stains the skin and clothes, is a road map to how unisex perfumes should be done. Upon first application, the fruity aspect, the Blackberry note, is prominent and smoky; a perfect opening volley that indicates what is to follow is going to be sexy, enigmatic, and interesting. The dark fruit note here serves as the tray the woods are served on. In the order of prominence, Balsam Fir, Cedar, and Musk are carried on the back of that glorious Blackberry until they all fade away, which is way over 12 hours. The Blackbird is what you would smell if you were to take a walk in the woods of the North on a rainy day and come across Blackberry patches along the way. The perfumer behind this took quite a risk composing this Black Beauty and the effort, in my opinion, was totally worth it. Recommended for all ages and genders who love to wear woody aromatic and are looking for the “dark edge” in a perfume without sacrificing the fresh aspect of it.

For PNW Lovers
I've been waiting to write this review for some time. Let me start by saying Dr. Ellen Covey spoke directly to my heart with this fragrance, and I want to do it justice.

When I first started getting into fragrances, I was thinking about the truly special smells in my life and memories. One of the first things that came to mind was a familiar smell to anyone who has lived in the Pacific Northwest: the smell of PNW countryside in the summer.

For those who haven't lived here, it's a very unique experience. After many months of rain, the cut grass begins to dry and sweeten by baking in the sun. The prolific blackberries ripen on the vine sending delicious sweetness into the dry, summer breeze. Warm evergreen trees drop their needles and add their soulful resinous notes to the mix. Pure heaven.

So when I read the description of Blackbird, I knew exactly what Dr. Covey was hoping to capture in fragrance form. I was elated.

One thing I've learned is that berry notes are nearly impossible to capture perfectly. The best you can do is a synthetic impression of berries that fades very quickly. So subtlety is impossible. For this reason, Blackbird starts off with a boozy blast of synthetic blackberry. This might be off-putting to some, but, mixed with the resinous cedar notes, it creates a dark and sultry combination. Very dark and I daresay, even "sexy."
The berry notes soften quickly and one becomes aware of the dry grass and vanilla notes. The result is a carmelized hay aroma that actually comes very close to the summer smell I remember! It's not perfect, but I appreciate the effort so much that it speaks directly to my heart. I may have to buy a bottle if only to support Dr. Ellen Covey and her amazing sensational attempts at capturing shared memories of the Pacific Northwest through smell. I may not love all her perfumes but I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dr. Covey and her work!

I will also note, this fragrance starts strong but quickly becomes a "skin fragrance." This is very wearable for any occasion.

“Come buy our orchard fruits, Come buy, come buy.”
While I know that Blackbird from Olympic Orchids takes its inspiration from the warm, sunbaked days, ripe blackberries, dry grass, and cedar trees of the Pacific Northwest, my imagination took a very different turn upon first wearing it. Of time spent in a haunted glen, with hungry roots and mossy stone. And across the brook, a troop of wicked goblin men–who find you napping all alone. They hobble, hurry, scrabble, scurry and once your face they spy, you wake befuddled, vision blurry to their helter-skelter goblin cry: “Come buy our orchard fruits, Come buy, come buy.” Though I believe Blackbird is meant to evoke a dreamy temperate midsummer day, in its fruit-like honey to the throat, I taste poison in the blood. The delicate mulberries, wild free-born cranberries, crab-apples, blackberries, damsons and bilberries, currants, and gooseberries are born in snow and mud. Apologies to Christina Rosetti for hacking up your beautiful poem although at its heart I think it’s warning us not to be greedy sluts, but whatever. This is all to say, even though I hate fruit (in the perfume world and also in real life) I really like Blackbird. It’s an ominous blackberry cautionary tale in a grove of dramatic conifers.

The Whole Blackberry Bush
This smells like not just blackberries, but the whole blackberry bush: ripe berries, leaves and the conifers that they're surrounded by. It's sweet but resinous at the same time, and both the blackberry and the fir notes come out strong - combined, it comes off a bit medicinal. As it dries down and is warmed up by my skin, the green comes through a bit more but it remains dominated by overripe fruit and resinous wood.

Another point of interest - for me at least - is the colour of the juice. The deep, dark, purple-near-black liquid really does resemble crushed blackberries that'll no doubt stain your fingers and clothes. Don't spray on light fabrics!

Two or so hours later, the medicinal quality goes away and the fruitiness and green come out more as the cedar and fir fade into the background. It smells strong still and I'm catching whiffs off my shoulder as I go about my day.

Longevity is absolutely bonkers. I put it on at around 3pm, went about my day, went to bed and was still able to smell it nose-to-skin when I woke up the next day. I'm no longer catching wafts of it, but the fact that it's still there albeit faintly as opposed to completely gone after 6 hours of sleep is wild.

Blackbird is a fascinating scent and I really appreciate the artistry behind every facet, but I'm unsure if this would be something that I'd wear - through no fault of it's own, but it just doesn't feel like myself. I feel like this may be better for me as a textile or room scent, and I think I'd reach for it to spray on a paper strip to keep at my desk to create a small scent bubble in my environment.

LOVE at first sniff
LOVE at first sniff, and at second, and at 3rd... Because the perfume has not a noticeable avolution. It is the same from born til dead. However It is a very pleasant perfume for me. What i get is a very nice red fruits fragance, fresh and dry instead of fruity and sweet as un other perfumes, with a hint of aromatic and resinous elements over a Green background. The performance is good and the price is fair beeing a niche perfume. Better for daytime use, total unisex and weareable un every season.

Don't know how this was received in 2013, but today it would be right at home next to other sickly sweet, syrupy, fruity "magnum opuses".

As summer peaks with blackberries ripe. Dry grass and dense forest air. While this brings a beloved scent memory, find it too sweet to wear.

Did not vibe with the woody resins here. I wonder if I have the gene that makes woody notes smell wrong.

Reminds me of Moonlight Path from Bath & Body Works, but with actual depth. I took a bath & washed my arms with soap & can still smell it!

A remarkable realistic blackberry, brambles and everything. Unfortunately the use of woods here somehow translates as fake oud to my nose.
