Complex Picture of a Gold Leather
Gold Leather is another of the wonderful creations made by Paul Kiler, a self-taught perfumer that share his knowledges in the DIY section of the basenotes forum, a person passionate about perfumery and dedicated to what he creates. One thing that pops out to me in his perfumes is its complexity: you cannot read or expect something from a Paul fragrance just for the listed notes, the final result is more complex than they and demans you to try and pay attention to the evolutions on the skin. His Gold Leather is quite interesting, a leather creation that happens so many things that it could be a vintage creation, but that certainly has a modern, bright and light aura at the same time. It starts with a very citrus aroma that reminds me the smell of sweet oranges. At this first i already detect the leather, an accord that reminds me more of suede, with a pinch of saffron maybe and slightly plastic side which is quite cool, that reminds you the smell of new plastic. In a second phase, this leather gains an harmonic white floral aura, which is very abstract to me: is something floral with a green and sweet nuances that blends very well with the leather. Sometimes during this floral phase i detect an almond aroma, that probably is due the tonka, which seems to go in and out of focus between the floral aromas. In a last moment, the creation goes into a base which has a slightly retro touch, a base that would fit very well into a vintage creation: an earthy aroma, a mixture of moss, woods, ambar and a slightly animalic touch that works very well as a rounding note inside the composition. There are so many small details that is hard for me describe them totally: it's a complex photography, where at distance the elements make the golden leather suggested but one that if you go closer you see that there is much to be understood behind of what seems to be so simple and harmonic.

Mysterious Non-Leather Scent
The question of why "Gold Leather" does not smell like leather arises from the typical ingredients that can create a leather scent. Neither iris nor anything smoky is listed, and I cannot perceive anything smoky during the entire time I am testing "Gold Leather." Why is the perfume named that way? How should I know?
"Gold Leather" starts like "Red Leather" with a mysterious bitter almond-like note. In "Gold Leather," this note is significantly stronger and on the verge of being unpleasant. Immediately follows that cedarwood scent again. While the bitter almond note remains relatively strong throughout, the woody cedar note largely disappears but is still faintly present.
Then "Gold Leather" becomes unmotivatedly aquatic. Now that I have called up "Gold Leather," I see that mandarin is listed. It always smells very perfumey-aquatic to me in a very specific way.
So many flowers are listed. I only smell a mélange of occasionally dense sweet flowers. Then again, there are bright flowers. However, I could not name any individually.
Then there is again such a mysterious plant: "Smoke Tree"
For this, I first had to consult the "quick" encyclopedia Wikipedia. What would we do here in Parfumo if it didn't exist? Perhaps the perfumers would either not name their strange ingredients at all or specify them very precisely.
The smoke tree belongs to the sumac family, and the smell of its leaves is said to resemble turpentine. I do not smell anything like that in "Gold Leather" at all. That's a good thing; I can hardly imagine it: bitter almond scent, mandarin aquatic, and turpentine. The thought makes me shudder. Therefore, I searched further among sumac plants. And the following plants belong to the sumac family:
Mango, pistachio, cashew, and indeed, I also called it up additionally to be sure: the red pepper berry.
Pistachio or even mastic could well be present in "Gold Leather," red pepper too; occasionally "Gold Leather" smells sharp-spicy.
I simply add the smoke tree to the resins that are mentioned, because "Gold Leather" smells of resins. In between, I also smell the straw flower or immortelle; it does not make the scent any more lovable for me.
Oakmoss, civet, tobacco, and sage I cannot define either. I do not miss them at all. I do not like all four ingredients individually, especially oakmoss, which I find dreadful. If they are present, then they are in homeopathic doses, and perhaps there are super-noses that could detect them if they are inclined to test these scents.
Otherwise, not much happens in the scent experience for me at first. "Gold Leather" oscillates a bit between the more consistent scent note with resins, the cedarwood note, the bitter smell, is slightly creamy, and the aquatic with a bright floral mixture in the background. Sometimes one facet is more dominant, sometimes the other. However, both are always perceivable to me.
I do not perceive any of the listed leather. I do not miss the leather scent and also think it does not suit this fragrance.
With the duration of testing, "Gold Leather" does change a bit after all. I occasionally smell a trace of a sour fruit, and Gold Leather becomes very strange. A scent of waxy-resinous parquet care lotion and a slightly aquatic-sour note. Above all hovers the bitter almond-like note and still the cedarwood scent.
I have no name for this scent mixture; I cannot even name a comparable note, neither from the perfume notes I know nor from everyday life with its infinitely many smells, scents, and scent mixtures. In this respect, "Gold Leather" is an extraordinary perfume for me.
The sillage of "Gold Leather" is moderate, and the longevity is presumably very long.
Since "Gold Leather" does not reveal itself to me at all, I cannot rate it better. I want to express that I find "Gold Leather" quite bearable and can also imagine that there are users who might like it. However, this leather scent without leather remains a riddle for me for now.

I can understand the leather association, although it feels vintage; lots of oak moss, ripe mandarins, floral-herb, little civet.

On me, a very sweet, almost piercing, marzipan-like creation with tonka and benzoin. It becomes softer, more musky-floral, with a hint of leather.

Darn! I smell leather. What now? Thick, artificial, and coated with a layer of plastic and flowers. Strong and soft.

Notes of vanilla-marzipan liqueur on flowers. Somehow delicious and very close to parked Floral-Gourmand. Leather can be crossed out. There isn't any.

The mandarin dominates over oak moss, then subtly floral and overall beautifully soft. Leather is absent and not missed. Lovely!

No leather! Very sweet, floral, fruity, creamy blend, later more bitter - lasts forever, sillage is strong, consistency feels oily on skin.

Without leather, bitter, resinous-woody, aquatic, strange up to the wood polish note, slightly floral, mysterious. "Enigma" fits as a name.
