Ink Stains on Green Papers
Incense resides in the writing rooms. It shimmers in countless drops of Elemi that live on the old walls. Ink flows from fine quills onto empty books made of green papers, leaving behind its luminous traces of astringent, dry tannins, tannins from plant galls, and white gum Arabic, branching out in tiny roots of delicate benzoin in the woody fibers. Like fingers of grasses in earthy soils. Between the lines. They sleep in leather bindings on dark cedar shelves.
**
"Ink" connects in a wonderfully transparent way fine smoky-resinous (frankincense, elemi, pepper), green-woody (papyrus, vetiver, cedar, ambrox), and earthy-rooty (vetiver, patchouli) aromas, thereby creating associative gaps that recall elements of classic iron gall ink. Thus, the astringent plant tannins, which were extracted in the Middle Ages from oak galls or other gall-bearing plants and used as tannins, can be sensed in the green-spicy-juicy notes of papyrus, the earthy-rooty-benzoin aromas of patchouli and Haitian vetiver. Frankincense and elemi contain aromas of gum Arabic (acacia resin), which was also used in the production. The fixative Isobutylquinoline contributes leathery notes that complement the scent profile of the ink and evoke thoughts of book bindings that surround dried green papyrus. Cedar and very moderately used ambroxan form a dark woody base. However, always present and perhaps even dominant is the Haitian vetiver, earthy, grassy, benzoin-like, rooty, and slightly ethereal, which inevitably brings the scent thematically and in terms of ingredients close to "Encre Noir." "Ink," however, is much more complex, delicate, and does justice to the theme. It projects moderately to skin-close throughout the evening.
