Seeing the Sea
After half a night and half a day of travel, we can see it for the first time. The sea. Somewhere between Montpellier and Perpignan, it’s time. It sparkles, first just a hint, then we see it clearly. We are almost there. The anticipation for the upcoming vacation grows. We take one last break at a rest area on the highway. The typical Mediterranean scents of the trees, shrubs, and herbs surround us. In the distance, I think I can already smell it, the sea. The air seems to shimmer with a gentle saltiness, but it is merely a hint of a sea breeze. So beautiful.

It is extremely rare for me to find a scent with sea and salt that I actually like. Usually, I can smell Calone from a kilometer away. But Lyn Harris wouldn’t be Lyn Harris if she didn’t manage to interpret this theme with her fine, classically influenced style. So here we have salt without Calone. The salt can be detected in the proximity to the sea. Salt presents a Mediterranean landscape, France, Spain, or Italy, depending on your taste. There are no limits to the imagination here. The scent is characterized by herbs and spices, rockrose and sage. It just fits perfectly for me.

In the base, I catch a whiff of the divine Lyn Harris amber, and in the air lingers a hint of a nostalgia aquatic that isn’t one. Suddenly, I think of Horizon by Guy Laroche. Lyn's fondness for classics strikes again here, even though the scents only resemble each other distantly.

Salt is one of her slightly stronger compositions. Still, I’m quite sure that it would probably be too quiet for Mr. Polly. Because there is never any shouting here by the sea. A scent of silence, like so many from Mrs. Harris. And that is exactly what makes it enchanting.

Many thanks to Violett for the opportunity to test this. It immediately reminds me of our trips to Spain. Next year again.

A New Kind of Saltiness.
Salt by Perfumer H (Lyn Harris) is an exquisitely crafted and fascinating perfume that combines a complex blend of herbs, spices, earthy notes, delicate floral, and leather nuances. It is a versatile scent that can be appreciated by both men and women and is suitable for all occasions.

The perfume evokes the feeling of a seaside landscape and the sense of a sea breeze. In contrast to the usual interpretation of saltiness in perfumery with ambergris and its aromatic chemical analogs Ambroxan and Cetalox, Salt brings forth the presence of sea saltiness through a freshness created by the contrast of herbs, citrus, earthy, and slightly leathery accords.

The opening notes are fresh and herbal, with a harmonious blend of rosemary, coriander, and white sage that imparts a green and aromatic character reminiscent of a garden in the countryside.

The heart of the fragrance is a warm and spicy combination of angelica seed and cardamom. The angelica seed provides a slightly peppery scent, while the cardamom adds a sweet and woody note. These spices weave together with the herbal notes to create a complex and intriguing fragrance.

The scent then reveals a sophisticated blend of cedar, orris root, patchouli, and labdanum as it develops. The cedar provides an earthy effect, adding depth and fullness to the fragrance, while the orris root imparts a powdery and slightly floral note. The patchouli contributes to a woody and balsamic scent, and the labdanum, also known as rock rose, adds a resinous and slightly sweet facet to the fragrance.

The fragrance contains a subtle oakmoss note that lends a delicate earthy and mossy touch.

In this delicate blend, there is also an accord of rose, lavender, and Italian bergamot. The rose note adds a touch of sweetness and elegance to the fragrance, while the lavender has a fresh and calming effect.

As with all works by Lyn Harris, this perfume has a subtle, airy openness that is nonetheless persistent, exhibiting a longevity of 4 to 5 hours on my skin. However, while people around you will notice your fragrance, you should not expect a strong sillage.

salty Brittany
Salt manages to smell of dunes and coast without becoming too obvious or flat. A marine feeling sets in immediately as soon as I wear the fragrance. It smells of botany by the beach without becoming herbal. For me, it smells like a walk on the beach in Brittany. In summer, it is incredibly refreshing and cooling. Fascinating how Lyn Harris consistently manages to translate a place, a feeling, or a memory into a fragrance. Always elegant, never intrusive or too obvious.

Saline and savoury without any sea notes. A little thick and musky too. But also somewhat upbeat. Very unusual in a lovely way. Well done.

Coriander-bergamot dominates with subtle floral accents. I don't smell any saltiness, but it's a solid green-herbaceous freshie.

Sea scent without Calone at all. The salt naturally builds the brain up, thanks to the Mediterranean flora.

Mist-laden air, salty and cool. I gather bitter roots and wild sage. The sea rises. The wind embraces me.
