Classic Oud-Rose with a Patchouli Twist
About the Brand
Providence Perfumes is a small brand run by Charna Ethier, based in Providence (Rhode Island on the East Coast of America). Offering up to 100% natural ingredients, it provides not only perfumes but also fragrant teas and body care products. What sometimes annoys me about natural perfumes is the one-dimensional scenting, e.g., only jasmine or lemongrass. I wish for more complex creations with development. Providence Perfumes meets this demand with flying colors and offers a refreshing variety, both in the scents themselves and across the collection.
I was particularly interested in how the classic "Oud & Rose" theme compares to synthetic perfumes in Rose Bohème.
First impression: Just the same. I can't tell if this is a natural perfume or chemistry at play.
A good sign; if natural perfumes could always do this, giving up synthetics would be easy.
About the Scent
The dark, juicy rose stands on a sweet metallic oud pedestal, with dry, spicy saffron threads blowing in the wind. Hints of rum-raisin chocolate, including the tiny, alcoholic sting that oud occasionally brings. Still well blended! Often smelled before, not innovative, but successful. After 2-3 hours, patchouli mixes in, velvety, almost textile-like, yes ... a bit like the upholstery of a cord sofa?! What sounds musty also means coziness, which the oud rose couldn't offer me at the beginning. The coniferous forest is recognizable, but far away. The pine spice harmoniously integrates into the overall structure, although I feel it could have come through earlier and more strongly.
In the base, patchouli plays the main role, dry to dusty and only hinting at a fine herbal fruit tea.
This lasts over 12 hours and more, especially for a natural scent, that’s excellent.
None of the three main scent notes can excite me in perfumes of any kind, so Rose Bohème is not a candidate for me to wear. However, I still find the brand appealing. Unfortunately, the samples are not cheap: $68 for 8 samples or $10 for one, plus shipping from the States. The bottles, on the other hand, also represent no inexpensive investment at about $175 / 50 ml, even though natural perfume can and must cost more. For those looking to explore the world of natural scents, I recommend Providence Perfumes as a brand.
