The Gateway to the Heart
.. opens up to a magnificent lavender field, dancing in the wind.
Magnificent in its colors, it brightens many a mood.
Moreover, a strong note of coffee hangs in the air, making everything seem very cozy.

Imagine being in an old stone house, sitting in a comfortable armchair, enjoying coffee while gazing at the never-ending landscape filled with lavender. This is Heart of the Darkness. I find it not so dark, but rather peaceful and content. For enjoyment. For lingering.

Over time, it becomes distinctly undercut, with a strong note of nutmeg, and it also turns a bit dark, sweeter, through the tonka bean. Always beautifully plump, swaying along, this unmistakable tone of lavender and coffee, which I find really well done.

For me, this fragrance is more of a gateway to the heart than the heart of darkness. It takes much more depth to pull one into the underworld. But for opening up, it is more than sufficient.

Unmistakable comforting sweetness lingers until the end, slowly fading away. The lavender heart bleeds out slowly before it takes its last breath and collapses exhausted into the center of the body.

Heart of Fougère
On one hand, the most classic Fougère, so old school that you can hardly believe it is a current natural perfume, especially since the longevity is phenomenal. The strong moss notes (up yours, IFRA!), lavender, cistus, vetiver, incense, and tonka-coumarin create an intense, swirling green-hay-dry-herbaceous wall of mist - truly impressive. In the midst of this jungle, however, Dr. Livingston sits in hipster attire, casually sipping an espresso. This perfectly integrated portion of zeitgeist saves the fragrance from an otherwise genius but overly irony-free retro-ness and makes it the Fougère sister in spirit of neoclassical Chypres like Ma'ai by Bogue - truly impressive. Although I have now brought the jungle into play, the Conrad association of the title is actually not fitting for me: this is not Or Black (a truly dark Fougère), not a place of unrestrained wildness like Conrad's colonialism-saturated African phantasmagoria, but rather something that the gentleman Joseph C. would have worn with a flawless suit in the early twentieth century. But perhaps this says something about the state of our overly synthetic fragrance culture, where Axe scent soup is "masculine," cotton candy perfume is "sexy," and any hint of corporeality is "ihhbääh." Be that as it may: Heart of Darkness, no; Heart of Fougère: yes - truly impressive!

Very successful
If I hadn't just filled the grinder with fresh coffee beans for tomorrow morning, I might have tried to perceive coffee or espresso here. Although I don't drink coffee, I absolutely must take a deep sniff from the can. I also won't deny that coffee has been processed here. But I don't smell it. I even went back to the kitchen cabinet to check.
However, from the very beginning, I do smell a pleasant bitterness, which I really like in fragrances. Accompanied by the finest oak moss!
As most who know me here are aware, I find the common oak moss in fragrances absolutely dreadful, truly nauseating. The modified oak moss ruins many a fragrance for me.
But real oak moss is also beautiful in perfumes for me. It's just that the blend in some perfumes is not pleasant to me, even when really lovely oak moss notes have been used. It may be due to the synthetic components that I generally don't like oak moss in perfumes.
In "Heart of Darkness," however, I find it beautiful. It is immediately followed by a blend of aromatic woods, resins, and balsams, with a fine smokiness added.
But then it doesn't become a tarry affair like, for example, "Black Amber" by Agonist.
Instead, masterfully added vanilla and labdanum make "Heart of Darkness" a wonderfully cozy scent, indeed a lovely, by no means sweet fragrance.
Nevertheless, the character remains intact; the oak moss recedes in its intensity, all ingredients/fragrance notes remain throughout.
Oh yes, in my opinion, "Heart of Darkness" surpasses fragrances like "April 4, 1968" by Rundholz, "All Angel Calling" by April Aromatic, and also "Black Amber" by Agonist.

Dark woody, roots fresh from the earth, with a hint of milder mocha and herbal lavender. Incense wafts above. Very intriguing!

Eureka, FOUND the coffee scent! Amidst smoky, steamy darkness lies a tonka-warm heart of gold.

In short: coffee, Elisen gingerbread, incense. Then dried spicy kitchen herb (tarragon?), which transitions into cooler incense over time.

Spicy-sweet note eruption settles down. Wonderful natural lavender merges with coffee + smoke. It gets darker. Perfume art!

Herb, dry, slightly smoky and masculine. Smells like patchouli, maybe it's the bitter coffee bean combined with the sour vetiver.

The name doesn't do it justice. It's a velvety heart of a café. Mossy, a bit of incense and tonka, just a hint of vetiver, lavender.
