Prohibition
Frank woke up with a terrible hangover. He opened his eyes and was glad that he could still see something. It is not healthy to drink Bay Rum. Bay Rum is a shaving lotion or hair tonic that originally came from Saint Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands). Back then, it was made from Bay and Rum (yes, that's not surprising now). Bay is not a beautiful bay but rather Pimenta racemosa, West Indian Bay. The oil of Bay contains Eugenol as its main component, which is also found in clove and carnation. Additionally, Bay contains Estragol (tarragon) and Chavicol (betel pepper). So Frank woke up, the gigantic hangover purred in his head and Frank smelled strongly of cloves. Cloves with a whiff of alcohol.
On the kitchen table stood or lay the empty Bay Rum bottles (58% neutral alcohol, for external use only). Not one of them contained a drop. Frank searched the kitchen cabinet for aspirin, sighed with relief when he found some, and took it with a bit of tap water. Frank had been bowling the night before with the guys from the office. There was nothing left to drink at the bowling alley since Prohibition was enacted in 1920. But "a man remains a man even if the suffragettes don't like it," Frank muttered and groaned. Frank usually used Bay Rum as a hair tonic. He had stocked up on it in 1919, fearing that there would be no hair tonic available in 1920. Although an unfounded fear, his foresight made him a very popular man last night. After bowling, the whole group wandered to his house. One bottle led to another. They bonded. Songs were sung. They danced on the tables and the last bowling friends left the house staggering in the early morning. "Hopefully they are all still alive," Frank thought as he started to clean up.
Bay Rum smells like Bay Rum and above all like Bay, meaning Eugenol (clove oil). Providence Perfume comes from Providence (Rhode Island, USA). With their Cologne (Köln) Bay Rum, they wanted to remind people that the nearby city of Newport was a center of rum production in the 18th century, which was due to Newport also being the center of the slave trade at that time, as rum was exchanged for slaves in West Africa. Is that a great reason to remember Newport? In any case, Newport is by the sea, and that's why the scent note "sea spray" is in Bay Rum. Sea spray smells somewhat like heating oil. Hence, the impression arises that Bay Rum is heating oil with a clove aroma. Something different.
I can't really recommend it to anyone. But if someone - like family tester M - thinks that heating oil smells great, then Bay Rum might be the right choice for him. At least during the Christmas season. If Frank were still alive, he would say that although he doesn't know exactly what happened that night, he hasn't used hair tonic since because the smell makes him feel sick.
