Patchouli + Labdanum + Vanilla + Rose = always a good idea
Once again I am surprised by the modern-smelling demeanor of a Rancé 1795 perfume. Although apparently based on a historic creation, LAETITIA was launched in 2008 and could easily be found among the Juliette Has a Gun line-up. The key notes to my nose are patchouli, labdanum, vanilla, and a touch of rose. Yes, this is a very familiar combination. Why? For the answer to that question, it suffices to take a sniff!

Yes, this is a beautiful perfume. I do detect a touch of nutmeg, but for the most part this composition seems much simpler than its note hierarchy would suggest. Of the perfumes from this house I've sampled, this is my favorite so far, not because it offers anything new in my experience, but because it simply smells so good! Yum!

Patchouli haters will want to stay very far away from LAETITIA. Patchouli lovers will likely love this, and I do believe that it is fully unisex, albeit slightly feminine-leaning, as my buddy Aromi concurs below.

Simply pleasant
A soft, smudgy swirl of cocoa (patch) and vanilla, with a velvety drydown that recalls the ambery, floral powderiness of Shalimar but not its sharper, smokier facets. Though I find Laetitia to be incredibly pleasant, the spot for a vanilla-patch in my collection has already been filled by Le Couvent's Nubica, which does pretty much the same thing as Laetitia for about one third the price.

The Rancé fragrances with female first names often refer to queens and regents from various eras. Whether the Rancé family had Laetitia, the mother of Napoleon Bonaparte, or another lady of noble birth in mind as the namesake, we do not know. The Spanish queen was probably not intended, as the fragrance is too old.

Laetitia is definitely a fragrance for queens. I envision a resin queen on a patchouli throne. The scent is dark, mysterious, and a bit wicked. I love that. Labdanum adds a wonderful hint of grunge. The vanilla is present but very subdued. In the foreground, patchouli and myrrh engage in a sensual dance, fueled by a wonderfully spicy and angular nutmeg. A fantastic combination of notes, so perfectly harmonized that the top, heart, and base notes flow seamlessly into one another. The fragrance remains consistently harmonious and beautiful throughout its entire duration. Nothing scratches or disturbs here, as is often the case with these older compositions, which simply bring a wonderful charm for me.

The lady is not shy. Of course, we are far from beast mode; these old French perfumes were never intended to be that way. But Laetitia does have a bit of spice. Two small sprays already envelop you in a gentle, sensual cloud of scent. Close to the skin, but definitely noticeable. For the wearer and for others.

Naturally, despite the citrus notes in the opening, this is not a summer fragrance, but when I recently received a package from the lovely FrauKirsche with this beautiful scent, I didn’t care that it was summer and we had 28-30 degrees. I absolutely had to wear Laetitia, who incidentally has also enchanted my partner.

Whether I am myself sassy and sensual enough for this resin queen, I still need to find out. She has piqued my interest, this regent with a hint of grunge. She smells to me like the big, much more mature sister of the vanilla and floral Miranda by Fragonard. And Macadam by Il Profumo, also a fragrance focused on resins and patchouli, but with more vanilla and flowers, could be Laetitia's cousin.

Rancé is simply a great house. Anyone who loves old-school perfumes should definitely take a sniff here. Wonderful! And: drumroll: not discontinued. A big thank you to FrauKirsche for the testing opportunity.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

You have acquired a perfume from the house of Rancé, and we congratulate you on that, as we have a rich tradition and have been delighting our customers with the finest scents for 400 years, and since 1795 we have dedicated ourselves entirely to perfumery. If you are expecting something sweet here, you are mistaken; please turn to a gourmet temple or directly to the Oracle of Delphi, but since the priestesses there are constantly smoking something, that might mislead you as well.
Therefore, we provide some important application tips:
1. Please apply the fragrance directly over your pulse points. Do not rub your forearms together, as that generates heat and destroys the fragrance molecules; moreover, it can lead to a puff that disassembles the slightly bitter aromas of our citrus fruits. Thank you.
2. To support the development of the heart note and to give roses, magnolias, and nutmeg enough space, we recommend throwing open the window and waving your arms towards the street. In doing so, you may inspire passersby to a spontaneous flash mob. Please play "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" in the background.
3. When the base note appears - and that takes a few hours - you can sing "A little resin must be!" We did not add powder, as we were lacking musk and iris.

We wish you great success with our creation, and in case of doubt, please consult the Oracle of Delphi.

Laetitia - 5 Star Fragrance
Right from the application, I thought, mhh, Laetitia, this could be something special. Ten minutes later, I checked if the fragrance is available in the souks and what price range we are talking about. To begin with, this behavior suggests that I really like this scent.

According to the fragrance description, the top notes consist of bergamot, mandarin, and orange blossom, but I don't notice any of that. I find the opening to be strong and somewhat pleasantly alcoholic, a bit like an old cognac; I don't detect any citrus here. The scent becomes spicy, slightly woody, with a creamy undertone, and the rose simmers only lightly in the background. The fragrance lingers for quite a while, patchouli emerges and blends in, and I think I perceive a very slight leathery note. (I sometimes smell leather where there is none, perhaps pure wishful thinking clouding my sense of smell.)

Laetitia is a noble, unique fragrance, off the mainstream, somewhat old-fashioned, which I agree with some previous comments, but that is precisely what makes it so appealing. A fragrance like a three-course meal made from exquisite ingredients, cooked with love and finely tuned. Everything harmonizes beautifully, the transitions are fluid, nothing disturbs or needs to be changed. The only thing one could criticize about Laetitia would be perfection.

Laetitia is a women's fragrance, wearable year-round, except in really hot temperatures. I rate the sillage and longevity in the medium range; I only know the bottle from the photo, but I think the color and design represent this fragrance wonderfully. Thank you, dear lab mouse, for this fragrance sample, and it's a pity you don't offer a decant.

Interesting balsamic base with patchouli spice and very cool vanilla. Not a dessert! On top, delicate fruity flowers, a bit of rose. °°°

A powdery, spicy, and at the same time resinously sweet scent with animalistic undertones. Not quite easy for me.

Starts with a refreshing orange blossom and then becomes increasingly resinous and spicy. The sweetness remains moderate. Very relaxing.

It hits hard at first with the nutmeg
Then the slightly annoying patchouli comes in
In the base, it's nice and soft - vanilla-powdery.
