Light? Meh!
I love the new Lumiere, which is 80% Gres Cabaret to me. I just had to try the original, which so many pine for. I managed to buy a part bottle of the edp -- The purple Femme-silhouetted bottle, now with orange juice. My exhilaration of this find turned into Meh! on my first test.

If the new Lumiere is 80% Gres Cabaret, then the old Lumiere is 80% Madame Rochas.

The old Lumiere opens with a classic aldehyde blast, along the lines of Madame Rochas but not as shrill. The opening gives way to a nice floral green. Pretty & long-lasting, with the Spring bulbs (hyacinths and daffodils) taking the stage, but hardly unique. It does sweeten through the wear, but I don't get the glorious woods that others report. It dries down to a soapy muck that softly lingers. The EdP wears close to the skin but for 6-8 hours.

Overall, on my skin it's very much like Madame Rochas, which is not a surprise given the shared notes. Sometimes there is a reason a fragrance is reformulated. I would have to say Lumiere was reformulated because it's not luminated. Light? Meh!

On a *brighter* note, I tested Azuree on the other arm today while testing this one. Azuree *outshines* Lumiere.

Puns intended.

Lumière
i think Aldehydes and Hyacith don't go
together in my opinion their to strong
of substance it's like a power keg going
off it just make me have a
headache but the drydown is nice smells
almost like Giorgio of Beverly Hills
but more heavier and with more Aldehydes

Purple light...
The original masterpiece first met me on a transatlantic flight in the 80s. I grabbed a bottle duty free. It was so massively intense! Everything about it was as bright as the spring sunshine. Giant expansive jasmine, hyacinth, rose and violet burst out with the first spray and play nicely together. It's very French and most can be misunderstood abroad.

It was never a hit in the USA with everything else getting all of the attention at the time. I shared it with a deserving friend, and she wore it often. She always admired my taste in perfume. In the 1980s, fragrance seemed gender specific and I would rarely wear this in public.

I though nothing could compare to this powerhouse masterpiece. It was typical for the time, which meant spectacular by todays standard.

Then Rochas became estranged and decided to reformulate this once incomparable bouquet. Its all-harsh chemicals and remote florals-nowhere close to the original. Alas, the light has gone out.

When 1+1+1+1 equals way more than 4
Simple scents can sometimes be a bit subtle to me. It is logic that the more notes, the more complexity. And I love to dive into an ocean of notes. Investigate the fragrance. Work out its secrets. That is why I love Lumiere even more. Four notes but high complexity. Amazingly done by Nicolas Mamounas, the nose behind Byzance, Mystere and Eau de Rochas. All favourites of mine.
This “Light” Rochas is not light. But it lightens up everything on a cold day. It is heavy, a bit old school due to the flowers and it warms and comforts you. It is long lasting and you share it with everyone else in the room. My partner finds it rather annoying but I love it.
The shape of the bottle is the same as Rochas Femme. It has a different top and colour, though. It looks so nice on my shelf.
I regard Rochas a Power House and I admire so many of their scents. When it comes to Lumiere I only know the original formulation from 1984. I have not tried the two reformulations from 2000 and 2016. My instinct tells me this is the best version. I am grateful to have it in my collection, especially since it is discontinued.

Muted Light
Anyone wondering why Lumière is presented in a smoky glass bottle will immediately realize after the first spray that there was indeed some thought behind it.

When a customer comes to me for advice on an evening makeup look, I usually ask her where the evening will take place. Of course, this often earns me a puzzled look, but there is a significant difference between a brightly lit ballroom and a candlelight dinner with dim candlelight. And this is exactly the mood that Lumière conveys.

The fragrance starts off cool and floral, with the radiance coming from within, and only in the heart note does the scent become noticeably richer and, thanks to the iris root, also more powdery. Lumière has a very typical note; I would almost describe it as oily. I suspect that Ylang-Ylang tempers the floral abundance here and transitions into the beautifully old-fashioned base with oak moss, which remains green-woody and restrained. Unfortunately, a bit too restrained, as Lumière sadly does not last long.

Lumière would therefore be the right fragrance for an evening by candlelight. However, the perfume is not overtly erotic. I would perhaps recommend it for a first date, where you want to get to know each other first and not jump straight into things.

However, I can no longer recommend the scent, as sadly Lumière has now become a thing of the past. I recently auctioned a mini bottle, but unfortunately, the fragrance had gone off. It would have been nice, but it just wasn't meant to be....

A serious chypre with spicy, green, and smoky-powdery notes and a bitter oakmoss base: feminine and masculine tones blend together.

It wasn't as radiant as the name suggests, but rather dull, muted, yet not bad. But... not really great either.

Soft light filters through the frosted glass windows. The summer heat stays outside. Cool green floral scents spread. I want spring!

Starts aldehydic: Chypre, classic-fougere-green-scratchy-herb, not very floral, oakmoss above all + leathery base. For hardcore Chypre fans.

In 1984 I found it young-romantic-elf-like, in 2016 more of a "classic-elegant, older lady." Noble, white-floral, delicate, but not for me.

Enchanting chypre from golden perfume times. Flowers upon flowers, mossy green, floral, elegant, soft. Noble base, hint of animalic. Love.
