Interesting Facts
The name of the perfume refers to Furuta Oribe (born as Furuta Shigenari), a daimyō and warlord of the 16th century who was a master of the Japanese tea ceremony. Besides establishing his own "Oribe-ryū" school, the ceramic wares ("Oribe-yaki") produced by his crafters are highly appreciated for their unconventional styles until today.
Oribe, of a rebellious spirit and defiant attitude towards authority, was regarded dangerous for his influential powers and was ordered to commit seppuku.

Top notch matcha
Satori presents a fresh tea scent of unparalleled quality. In every aspect you can experience the house's trademark finesse. Its soft approach makes this stand out amongst all other green tea scents.

Hyouge does not come with strong flavors like a heavy citrus or a robust woody tea note. We are talking delicate nuances here. The tea of choice is a green-powdery tea that feels mildly bittersweet. Its bitter facet is neatly accentuated by soft aromatic top notes and offset by a mild floral heart.

Contrary to most green tea interpretations like Green Tea Eau Parfumée or Wūlóng Chá Extrait de Parfum, citrus plays but a minor role. As a result, the focus is fully on the lovely aromas evoking a bowl of matcha tea. Yes a bowl.

Yes,this is the matcha.
I finally found the real "matcha". But I'll say it first. The scent disappears very quickly. At 31 degrees and 56% humidity, the scent disappears instantly. Well, this is not very helpful because Japanese summers are abnormally hot.
As I wrote in this review( "Black Tea (Eau de Parfum) | Fernanda / フェルナンダ" ), oolong tea, green tea, and black tea are all the same tea leaves, so it's difficult to tell the difference. So this is amazing. If you look it up, you'll see that the degree of fermentation is different. Green tea is not fermented. However, matcha is "aged" in the shade. what gives it its "umami" flavor. I wrote about that in a blog when I tried this perfume on paper. Please take a look if you have time.

It's hard to explain, but this is very, very matcha. The bitterness, astringency, and flavor of matcha are well reproduced. And the iris gives it a "coolness". It's great, well made. Matcha should not contain orange blossom, fig, or vanilla. Lol, that would be a sub-type of matcha. Of course, perfume is an "art", so it is up to the perfumer.

This is a perfect reproduction of the scent in the air when matcha is added, where Poudre Matcha failed. It's the winner.

But it's "cold". It's not hot matcha. Another Japanese person said, "It's like cold green tea on a summer's day, poured into a clear glass cup", and I can understand that. It's either green tea or matcha. Summer, the sound of cicadas, tatami mats, corn boiled by grandma, the smell of a wooden house. Cumulonimbus clouds, sudden downpours, mosquito coils, buying ice cream at a convenience store at night. Joe Hisaishi's piano, a summer mirage. Japanese summer disappearing like a heat haze. It's a clear, yet very sad scent that makes me want to repeat August 31 forever.

Also, in Japan, sugar is never added to green tea or matcha. It's not a matter of preference or person, but 100% of the time it's not added. I've never seen any relatives or friends add sugar. So, when I hear a sweet scent in "green tea" or "matcha," I feel that it can't be called the real thing...I'm being completely honest here, so it is not complaining.Well, the story about matcha is getting long, so I'll stop here.

Also, if you want to try all the Parfum Satori flavors, I recommend "@cosmeTOKYO" in Harajuku, Tokyo. They have all the flavors here, as well as other niche Japanese perfumes.

Dedicated to the talented disciple of the Japanese tea master, Sen no Rikyu
Being a green tea fan myself, I had this preconceived notion that Oribe would be a relatively sweet and light fragrance. As I slowly take a soft whiff of it, I was welcomed by the gentle rush of airy freshness, mirroring the frothy top layer of the tea where it's light and airy. I was like, that was not so bad until the moment I inhaled deeply.

A sudden surge of intense green notes instantaneously hit me. Satori-san's verdant combination of green leaves and mildly peppery sage produced a vibrant, aromatic top scent refreshes me. Similar to the initial stage of drinking authentic matcha tea, the first few sips were indeed high as your taste buds were getting used to the feeling of green freshness.

As the genderless perfume transitioned to its heart stage, I could definitely detect the comforting waft of green tea. Surprisingly, it was delicate and definitely bitter with a subtle sweetness, as opposed to overly sweet and vigorous that I had noticed in the market.

Satori-san elucidated, "In Japan where you experience [a] tea ceremony, you'll find that this note is a little bit bitter, soft and sweet. This is how you identify authentic Japanese green tea in [its] powder form. You can find much green tea fragrances in the market shops, but I think this is very unique."

As I looked at my notes, there was no matcha accord. How strange! In fact, her usage of jasmine, violet and patchouli gave the exact same scent profile effect as green tea. The earthiness of patchouli dances around with the powdery accords of violet, while the heady profile of jasmine kept making me taking multiple whiffs on my wrists subconsciously. Such endless euphoria!

Towards the end, Oribe mellowed down softly on my skin, guiding me towards a woody undertone. In fact, I did still get hints of the heart notes, despite it being very faint. Satori-san love for iris could also be detected here – delicate, powdery – mimicking the after effect of consuming a cup of matcha tea down.

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with Oribe’s performance on my skin. The absence of sticky notes made it extremely suitable for gents (and ladies) to wear all year round, all-occasion due to its versatility. It was not overpowering to me and actually encapsulated the true meaning of matcha scent in a bottle.

My only wish was that its performance on my skin should last even longer. That would truly be a winner in my books. Speaking of which, all of this matcha talk only intensified my sudden craving for matcha tea. And matcha Mille-Feuille. And matcha ice cream. And matcha milk tea. And the matcha cake… ????

Surprising Japanese tea fragrance
Here, the matcha note reveals itself as a gentle, smoky green tea aroma—subtle and restrained. The opening is a burst of crisp green tea paired with sage, delivering a sharp, cooling greenness in the first moment. I especially love this combination—it’s refreshing and uplifting.

The white florals aren’t particularly prominent, but they give the heart of the fragrance a lightness and transparency that makes the tea note feel even more refined and luminous. There’s a fascinating duality to the scent—it feels both sweet and slightly bitter. That touch of bitterness enhances the realism of the tea, making it almost tactile, like powdered matcha itself.

The tea note here beautifully channels the essence of Japanese aesthetics: clean, precise, disciplined, and delicate. You get fresh florals, a bittersweet green tea accord, and soft woods—all layered in quiet harmony.

Overall, my impression is simple: a work of elegance. Longevity is quite good, though the sillage is more intimate—making it a perfect scent for the office or quiet moments. It nourishes the spirit.

Highly recommended for tea scent lovers.

tea done naturally
This opens very fresh and aromatic with a sappy earthiness to it. Fresh green leaves, with hints of naturalistic sweetness to it, but void of any gourmand undertones. It’s like a hyperealistic field of raw greens. This scent is simple, elegant, tranquil, and calming. It feels very effortless in the base as dry woodiness comes in. This is ceremonial tea in a wooden plank home in the early dewy mornings of spring, herbal freshness in the subtle winds blowing past.

100% Japan. It is not sweet or gentle, it is meditative and introverted, beautiful matcha.

Delicate cream-white blossoms. Mossy bed. Deeply dreaming. Bundled power held in a spell. Bitter green, almost painfully beautiful silence.

Green, greener, greenest. A very quirky & herb-cool creation with sparse floral touches. Unfortunately, it doesn't evoke anything in me at all.

Green, a bit watery, but no Calone-aquatic, bright, fragile, delicate, Japanese. The scent for the tea ceremony.

very green+loud scent, more generally chlorophyll-like (and somehow familiar) instead of matcha. The other notes are mercilessly drowned out - what a shame.

The opening is strict and austere, followed by delicate floral notes, with a woody-powdery finish. Subtle and of peculiar beauty.
