The Gospel of a Bitter Vanilla
Vangelis is a spiced vanilla with a hint of mandarin. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, I detect a strange undertone in the background, something almost medicinal. It might be the bitterness of the almond giving me that slightly "cyanide-like" effect. My senses are on alert.

Moreover, the spices feel a bit muted, and I find both longevity and sillage lacking.

No love at first sniff for me.

Vanilla for Angels?
When I hear "Vangelis," I immediately think of the Greek composer.
However, "Chariots of Fire" or "Conquest of Paradise" don't come to mind right away.
Although the latter is likely known even to non-music lovers thanks to the gentleman boxer Henry Maske; how often did he enter the boxing ring to these sounds!
That was, of course, "great cinema" for the eyes and ears back then!
And it still sends shivers down the spine today!
When I think of Vangelis, I rather recall his composition "Mythodea"; beautifully sung by soprano Kathleen Battle and the great Jessye Norman, accompanied by a powerful choir.
This piece was recorded in connection with NASA's Mars mission "Mars Odyssey" in 2001, and a CD of it was sent into space.
What a fantastic idea for a fantastic piece of music!

But upon closer examination and acquaintance with Sylvaine Delacourte's vanilla collection, I notice that all these fragrances carry a "Va-" - likely for vanilla - in their names.
Is "Valkyrie" perhaps a praise of vanilla; could "Vangelis" mean "vanilla for angels"?

I must say, this explanation for this almost indescribably beautiful scent pleases me much more.
And which angel wouldn't appreciate the Madagascar vanilla we already know, accompanied by black pepper and cardamom, with more than just a nose full?
If you then add the clove, originally from the tropics, and the "completely ordinary," yet improbably aromatic garden carnation, the senses begin to dance quietly with excitement.
Clementine and bitter almond blend very well here and harmonize with the previous scent progression. The jasmine, with its heavy, slightly decaying fragrance, actually crowns this composition. "Vangelis" could be finished here!
But that's not the case: the ever-beloved sandalwood gift, once again introduced with great sensitivity, makes the spicy scent mélange vibrate softly; it becomes alive and slightly seductive.

"Vangelis" is also one of those almost ethereal scent webs, where the vanilla delights with an unexpectedly transparent quality.
Where it usually dominates robustly, warmly, and always with a slight eroticism, here it clearly takes a step back and plays perfectly in the circle of other fragrance notes to my delight.
The resulting composition is also not very long-lasting; but it delights with its protective fragrance.
Like fine lace, "Vangelis" envelops and conveys comfort. Not just to oneself, but also to the surroundings. They are usually pleasantly touched by the delicate scent.
Thus, this "angelic vanilla" is a beautiful example of how quickly a preconceived opinion can change.

The five fragrance samples from Sylvaine Delacourte's vanilla collection (my thanks to Alöx for this) have taught me that vanilla scents do not always have to be opulent and powerful.
They can also appear as a finely crafted piece of jewelry.
It is wonderful that both variants have found their place in our world of fragrance.

Tender Spices
I have no idea whether Sylvaine Delacourte is really referring to the composer Vangelis with this fragrance, or if there are other meanings behind the name. When my son discovered electronic music in his childhood, he listened to Chariots of Fire or later the soundtrack to 1492 Conquest of Paradise for hours with growing enthusiasm, and thankfully there were headphones because it had to be turned up loud. The music spoke to me back then as well, and I can't deny that it still gives me goosebumps today, especially since I still enjoy it occasionally in lower doses.

A fragrance that has - I admit - the appealing mainstream music of the Greek composer as its theme would need to present itself much more powerfully for me. When I look at the pyramid and also the video that Sylvaine Delacourte presents on her website for the fragrance, there seems to be quite a bit of spice involved, and one might expect that the scent would really clear the head. However, the perfumer shows that it is indeed possible to create a delicate and feminine fragrance with actually strong spice notes that whispers instead of shouting. At no point does Vangelis remind me of cooking recipes or Christmas baking.

I still hesitate to call a fragrance "beautiful," and I strictly forbade my trainees from doing so back then, but this perfume fits the description. The scent is bright, tender, creamy, yet also powdery and fine, and if it were music, it would be more of a minuet rather than waves of thundering synthesizers.

I like the scent; it pleases me more and more each time, but it belongs to the perfumes that I enjoy from time to time and that don't need to accompany me daily - just like the music of Vangelis. Although I still don't know if he is actually the one meant.

Elf Wedding
Today the little elf celebrated her wedding.
The festivities are slowly coming to an end.
As is proper, she has withdrawn first.
She stands by the window, watching the still-celebrating elves, listening to the beautiful music.

In her hair, a crown of fresh jasmine flowers. She licks her lips with her tongue, still tasting the fresh, sweet flavor of the nectarine nectar.
A loving smile plays around her mouth. She thinks of the wonderful wedding feast her mother had prepared and her skillful hands while seasoning. A little clove here, a tiny pinch of pepper from her delicate elf hands there, the dessert, cooked in beloved almond milk.

But soon the thought becomes a thing of the past. Her husband enters the bedroom. She stands with her back to him, cannot see him, but she can smell him.
That distinct scent of cardamom that always surrounds him due to his work in the fields, and which she loves so much about him.
His scent mingles with the delicate wood of the newly built little house.

He looks at her, she is small, hardly taller than a dragonfly.
The dress made of delicate feathered carnations. Its scent, barely perceptible, blends with her vanilla.
Gently, he pulls the dress from her alabaster shoulders and carries her to the bed.

Softly, he lets her glide onto the soft sheets of light suede.
No longer are there the scents of cardamom, leather, vanilla, or wood. They merge together, becoming one.....

Morning dawns, new life awakens......

For me, this is primarily a leather scent in the base, softly vanilla and finely spiced on light skin, beautiful.
The order in which the fragrance notes appear is not exactly adhered to in the story. For example, the cardamom is most intense quite early on.

I wish you much joy with this incredibly beautiful fragrance, worthy of an elf wedding.

In the vanilla set this is called the spicy one. And while this is true, I actually find its sister Valkyrie to be more spicy on my skin.

Spicy, cozy vanilla-cardamom-pepper dream, beautifully rounded off by creamy jasmine + sandalwood. Cloves dance samba to it.

The vanilla is spiced up and crowned with flowers before sandalwood makes an appearance. A fine creation for vanilla angels.

Overall, unsweetened woody vanilla. At first too "clove-like" for me. Then it becomes "rodents in a pet store." Then it gets softer & too boring...

A truly beautiful scent - subtly spicy, creamy with a hint of vanilla. I detect a touch of leather underneath, everything perfectly balanced.

I almost sneezed from the pepper. The other spices are milder, but unfortunately, there's a weird rubbery note. I just don't like it.

Although I actually like clove, I find the scent strange. Clove dominates. Along with buttery-sweet vanilla and bitter almond.
