Enigmatic, Glamorous, and Captivating
I am addicted to Ted Lapidus's colognes, from the very first discovery of TL pour Lui, through Altamir, then the Lapidus pour Homme - Gold - Black Extreme threesome, and ultimately these two dark gems. I've got both versions of BlackSoul, namely this and the Imperial one, and I love them both. BlackSoul is a little bit lighter than Imperial, and they seem to be designed one for the brightest day and one for the blackest night moments. I bought both blindly, altogether, and have no regrets whatsoever. I read all of the comments around describing this as a "One Million" clone. Well, it is undoubtedly in the same vibe as that scent, but I wouldn't label it a cheap copy or a clone of that scent. BlackSoul is more camphoraceous, resinous, and spicy, lacking the fruity synthetic bubble gum of One Million, to my nose. Believe me or not, BlackSoul and One Million are different from one another.
BlackSoul belongs to the oriental-woody-ambery family. The opening is profound and astonishing. On my parched skin, the green, balsamic, and spicy notes of crushed leaves, cardamom, and mint are dominant, a sort of sharp, resinous, and aromatic accord. Conversely, on the paper strip, the lemon, neroli, and bergamot blossoms shine and sparkle, nothing from the citrus fruit, but the floral.
After about half an hour, the perfume moves toward a more substantial and warmer accord of dried fruit and spices. The spearmint of the top notes still lingers in the background and stays through the life of the scent, and when combined with the spices, it creates a minty chocolate aroma. It's not a bar of candy chocolate, but more of powdery chocolate created by the spices. That minty-cocoa blend melts harmoniously with the spicy Medjool dates and petite raisins desert fruits, the superb herbaceous saffron, and the sweet-warm-earthy reddish-brown cinnamon bark.
Transitioning to the alluring base, hot smoked woods and precious balsams make the trail. Cedarwood imparts its camphoraceous, pencil shaving scent, while tolu balsam infuses its balsamic and cinnamic facets. A sweet and airy woodiness from guaiac wood is also present. Ambrocenide contributes its amber-like, woody character, while musk diffuses its soft and sweetly clean nuances. A comforting dry down succeeds.
BlackSoul is masculine, bold, refined. The target of this underrated scent should be guys above 25, and it is perfect for the office, the composition has average projection and average longevity, lasting about quite a few hours. The dominant notes are accurate in cool evenings, and cold days, late fall, and whole winter are my recommended seasons.
