Enigmatic, Glamorous, and Captivating
I am addicted to Ted Lapidus's colognes, from the very first discovery of TL pour Lui, through Altamir, then the Lapidus pour Homme - Gold - Black Extreme threesome, and ultimately these two dark gems. I've got both versions of BlackSoul, namely this and the Imperial one, and I love them both. BlackSoul is a little bit lighter than Imperial, and they seem to be designed one for the brightest day and one for the blackest night moments. I bought both blindly, altogether, and have no regrets whatsoever. I read all of the comments around describing this as a "One Million" clone. Well, it is undoubtedly in the same vibe as that scent, but I wouldn't label it a cheap copy or a clone of that scent. BlackSoul is more camphoraceous, resinous, and spicy, lacking the fruity synthetic bubble gum of One Million, to my nose. Believe me or not, BlackSoul and One Million are different from one another.

BlackSoul belongs to the oriental-woody-ambery family. The opening is profound and astonishing. On my parched skin, the green, balsamic, and spicy notes of crushed leaves, cardamom, and mint are dominant, a sort of sharp, resinous, and aromatic accord. Conversely, on the paper strip, the lemon, neroli, and bergamot blossoms shine and sparkle, nothing from the citrus fruit, but the floral.

After about half an hour, the perfume moves toward a more substantial and warmer accord of dried fruit and spices. The spearmint of the top notes still lingers in the background and stays through the life of the scent, and when combined with the spices, it creates a minty chocolate aroma. It's not a bar of candy chocolate, but more of powdery chocolate created by the spices. That minty-cocoa blend melts harmoniously with the spicy Medjool dates and petite raisins desert fruits, the superb herbaceous saffron, and the sweet-warm-earthy reddish-brown cinnamon bark.

Transitioning to the alluring base, hot smoked woods and precious balsams make the trail. Cedarwood imparts its camphoraceous, pencil shaving scent, while tolu balsam infuses its balsamic and cinnamic facets. A sweet and airy woodiness from guaiac wood is also present. Ambrocenide contributes its amber-like, woody character, while musk diffuses its soft and sweetly clean nuances. A comforting dry down succeeds.

BlackSoul is masculine, bold, refined. The target of this underrated scent should be guys above 25, and it is perfect for the office, the composition has average projection and average longevity, lasting about quite a few hours. The dominant notes are accurate in cool evenings, and cold days, late fall, and whole winter are my recommended seasons.

Synthetic Soul
A very familiar, sweet bubblegum top-note: "Black Soul" by Ted Lapidus is not as black as its title indicates. It's a bittersweet, minty fragrance mixed with fruity overtones and cinnamon in the heart. The drydown is not convincing, synthetic cedarwood rules and loads of other "new" aromachemicals have been added in order to achieve a slightly camphoraceous effect, which I don't like. Often compared to "1 Million" by Paco Rabanne, this one is a low-budget version (12 Euros) of a very popular genre, not worse than the famous Paco Rabanne, though much "mintier" and less vulgar.

Black Soul - the Catholic
In the holy city of Cologne, I got to know Black Soul today. It fits this perfume perfectly. I was hit by a violet-like, lemony, and fruity-sweet memory, the memory of cheap carnival candy. As a child, I always caught plenty of those on Rose Monday and proudly took them home.

Are men's fragrances with candy aromas currently in vogue? Just recently, Police released something like that - Gold Wings. Both fragrances follow in the footsteps of the excellent Amber pour Homme by Prada, but cannot keep up with this noble interpretation of violet.

Unfortunately, the candy note of Black Soul does not last three wonderful days; after just two hours, it's Ash Wednesday! Then there's howling and chattering of teeth. A huge ash cross appears before our eyes. Quite vaguely ashy, woody, bitter, and dry - somewhat like Davidoff's unfortunate Champion or the creaky Kenneth Cole Vintage Black. So, enough of the fun!

Black Soul is as schizophrenic as the Rhineland-Catholic soul when it comes to joy of life. First, there's a compulsion to celebrate and laugh, then it's Lent. I do believe that one or two people can make something of the candy aroma. But it fades away and, in a way, turns into its opposite. I don't think there's a refined concept behind it, but rather the sheer technical impossibility of preserving the used top and heart notes even in traces. Thus, something is created that is neither fish nor fowl. The quality is commensurate with the price of €19.95.

Better to drink one Kölsch less and instead buy Prada's Amber pour Homme!

Here I have...
... well, what do I have here? Surely a bad purchase. But I was curious about the brand and this scent is not available for testing in stores. So I ordered it. I applied it and on my skin, it is an unbearable perfume. I find that personally disappointing.

When applying this fragrance, the first thing that hits the nose is a citrusy green spiciness that gives off a strong synthetic cleaning product vibe due to the neroli. The dates, cinnamon, saffron, and raisins that should make it interesting do not save the scent either. Just like the woody notes and the sweetness of the tonka bean. And what makes it really terrible in my nose is the extremely artificial musk used in this perfume. I have rarely purchased such a failed fragrance as this one. But since I am a nerd, it will still remain in my collection.

The longevity and sillage are good.

Here we have a scent that I only see for those over 40. This is a perfume for cold days. Yes, and when would I wear this fragrance? It can be worn both during the day and in the evening. Personally, I will not wear it. This scent is also not suitable for ladies.

Anyone who enjoys a citrusy green spicy woody cleaning product scent can certainly give this a try. But that is just my personal opinion.

O-flower & jasmine typically strong. Animalic meets dried fruit & wood.
Saffron surprisingly enjoyable.

Very animalistic and masculine. A horse stable scent combined with a sexy raisin sweetness. Takes some getting used to. It takes courage to wear it.

Well-crafted spicy (cinnamon) woody scent with a moderate sweetness. You can also perceive fruity notes underneath. Well done. H&S good.

Moody scent: sometimes I like it - sometimes I can't stand it. I've rarely smelled something so peculiar. Guaranteed to stand out and polarize!
