Dry Smokey Oud
Initial Impression short review

Very dark, smokey, and dry. Don't be fooled by the sweet notes of vanilla, praline, etc., I feel there is just barely enough of those notes to not be offensively bitter and acrid. This is slightly bitter and acrid, but in a good 'sat close to a bonfire' way. The beginning brings a very rubbery oud, which gives way to the main smokeyness- perhaps they are going for burning/burnt oud feel? Maybe someone more familar with that could tell me if that's accurate, but I really enjoy it anyhow.

In comparison, I had bought Amouage Interlude for the smokeyness, but it was too sweet, so I sold it. I am not saying they smell anything alike, but I much prefer this dry smokiness to the overly sweet oppoponax of Interlude. Performance also is nowhere near the Amouage, obviously, but decent for the $30-ish that I paid.

Edit: After a while the sweet notes cone out to play, but only slightly and definitely not cloying. More like a smoked plum feel, without being excessively opulent. Highly recommended, but not for everyone.

Gone With The Smoke
There’re difficult reviews, which need more time than others… This took until the cold came again and I pressed the spray; I ordered another backup bottle right now and started this text.

Well…. the smell: Smoked and dry leather, burned on a dark and dense wood.

It may not sound like a desirable fragrance - and I get it -, but I find it fascinating.

… Add soft notes of bitter coffee and cocoa with a subtle plum hidden between saffron and incense: Voilà! That’s it.

It’s clear that it isn’t a perfume for everyone. Okay. But It's mysterious, it has style… And it’s also different and daring.

TL Oud Noir is perfect to wear with a black leather jacket, and seriously: This fragrance makes many famous leather perfumes smell like children's lollipops.

For the cold: Solid projection & duration, a winner without qualms; not for fearful hearts, this is a rebel perfume.

The quality is the best of designer and right now it’s available at a ridiculous price (…). This one and Oud Blanc are the most exclusive releases from Ted Lapidus, so it’s a special aroma, yes… but it ends up becoming very addictive.

So wear it at your own risk. Or not… Who cares? I already have my backup bottle, so about your relationship with this perfume: “Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn".

Plum, Oud, Leather
This is a dark smokey oud and leather fragrance with a sweet plum note. I love the dark deep oud, resinous, and leather in this scent. But the plum note really hangs around on my skin and distracts from the woody resinous aspect of this fragrance and for some reason that just bugs me.

Overall this is very nice fragrance but not a Ted Lapidus I will buy again. I will stick will TL Pour Homme or Black.

If you like fruity oud fragrances than this is likely one to check out.

Autumn is saved!
Do I need yet another fragrance with oud? Especially when it comes from a Western manufacturer that predictably interprets and dilutes oud in a Western way? To be honest, I've been avoiding "Western" oud fragrances lately and focusing on the countless Arabic producers that often offer more interesting and distinctive oud interpretations - not to mention the lower prices.

I make exceptions - especially when the fragrance is from Ted Lapidus - a brand that belongs to the Bogart Group and offers many unique scents for a damn low price (just like Bogart itself). I think you can rarely go wrong with Ted Lapidus. Their portfolio only offers two oud fragrances, which is a sign that they haven't beaten the oud wave to death with billions of flankers like Montale has been doing for a while now....

In front of me is the ribbed, slender black bottle with golden labels. It looks quite heavy and valuable, and is minimalist to the eye. Considering that this "Oud Noir" is sold for just a little over 20 euros, one shouldn't even complain in the slightest.

The scent is a little revelation; it feels much more expensive and noble than one initially suspects. Wonderful autumnal smoky notes combine with a hint of coffee. The charred note of ignited woods is clearly present, along with that unique spiciness known from harvest fires in late summer and early autumn. I usually only know this from Amouage's "Interlude Man" and its equally well-known Arabic dupes "Midnight Oud" and the white "Shaghaf Oud Abyad." With Ted Lapidus, additional notes come together to create a compact fragrance that I find quite masculine, as well as unique. It’s those few fragrances that stand out immediately from the many and etch themselves into memory. I’m not completely on board with the designation "oud," rather burnt oud. But whatever. It’s still a completely successful fragrance. Compliments, Ted!

A Rumble in the Spice Forest...
You can almost hear it while smelling! The rumble and pump in the dark forest. When dry branches crackle in the incense fire. With almost everything that has roots, a trunk, and a crown. But here, there are no lumberjacks warming themselves by the campfire during their breaks. It is rather the forest itself that is "working" here.
From the gloomy underbrush, all sorts of spices push their way forward. Dark nutmeg, fiery-warm saffron, sandy-crunchy "coarse" cinnamon. The fluttering of the "leather wings" of bats flitting among the birches.
And who has brewed coffee somewhere here? A delicate flag wafts in from afar. Surely from a garden? As the coffee scent mingles with that of delicate flowers? These aromas on the very edge. And yet a must to sniff. To briefly catch a glimpse of vague light.
But the looming darkness endures every little sunbeam that may break through. This darkness is even pleasant! Is there a "living forest" on a late autumn evening again?! Quite unusual, this "Lapidus." It is not even remotely similar to any perfume I have known so far. No. I have never heard - let alone smelled - such a "rumble in the spice forest." A unique piece that seeks its equal. And at the same time, a lavishly opulent oriental bazaar. Truly one of a kind! ;-))

Layers of smoky and balsamic parts are superimposed. So it feels more complicated than it really is. But poor shame performance.

rough, spikey, and smokey oud. Imagine a leather jacket hanging by a fireplace with someone occasionally throwing plastic in the fire.

A smooth and fruity leather oud. This is classy. And lovely packaging. I'm surprised there is no Rose note listed.

Birch and smoke. Ash and wood.
Dark spice and roasted coffee. Delicate fruit and tobacco sweetness.
Warm-smoky blend with a woody finish!

The opening is intensely saffron-like + smoky. Just a hint of roasted coffee. It becomes a gentle, fruity + vanilla leather sofa in front of a smoking fireplace.

Ouditis brachialis. Kokel, smoke, wood, tar, and tonka. A Western interpretation of oud, and it’s successful. Incredibly good price-performance ratio.
