Lapidus, Lapidus
If you remember the white suit John Lennon wore on the cover of the album Abbey Road, or remember when jeans became the thing to wear, or when military patches first appeared on jacket shoulders, if you remember the safari suit, then you remember Ted Lapidus. Scooping up his fragrances six years after he died in 2008 didn't quite feel like snapping up Picassos, but it's the same territory because both had a major stylistic influence on the world. The biggest difference is price, not quality. Most Lapidus perfumes can be had for under $20. Once again I was stunned. Having encountered them and the Tea Rose line from Perfumer's Workshop, it's just possible I may never buy a $200+ fragrance again. Why, when Création is available? After an initial lovely blast of principally citrus and tropical fruit (given distinction by the use of Galbanum), a bouquet of florals blooms beneath my nose, so beautifully blended that I think I must be smelling a scent celebrated women wore and I am. The florals are supported by a classic base superbly rendered, because it's hard to find this familiar accord performing so well. In fact, the notes are nothing unusual these days, but this perfume is. Création is luxurious without being too heavy, seductive without being crass. It captivates the nose, like a perfume should. So glad I found it.
