The simplest ideas

Tom Ford, Lavender Extreme.

The greatest ideas, in my experience, are the simple and obvious ones. The "why didn't I think of that?" ones.

Lavender has to be one the most universally loved scents in the universe. I've met no one who dislikes lavender. Seriously--if you have a problem with lavender, who are you?

So lavender, being so popular, is part of the recipe for what seems like every cologne, EdP, room spray, candle, you name it. Fragrances for men, for women, for children--lavender. It is to the scent recipe as baking soda is to baking.

But.

For all the universal appeal of lavender, surprisingly, very few houses build a fragrance around it. PART of the recipe, sure. Maybe even a big part of the notes now and then.

But the BASE? The overall impression? Heck, the single NOTE of a one-note fragrance?? For some reason, no manufacturer does this.

So the genius of TFLE is just doing what should have been so obvious, so simple--make a lavender fragrance, for anyone.

That said, this could have been a genius idea but botched in the execution. It could have smelled like a room candle, or an air freshener, if not done correctly. Tom Ford has a high brand and image, and this fragrance was done at the level you would expect as part of this house.

Bold and daring.

Strong--nothing by Tom Ford is ever "clean" or "mild".

Layered--there is chocolate, fruitiness (raspberry?), some aldehydes perhaps.

But all returns to lavender. A very expensive, layered-but-seems-like-single-note fragrance.

This scent could fit into any collections--man or woman; spring or fall. Recommended highly

Magic
Tom Ford perfumes are pure magic. You can like them or not, but almost all perfumes of its private blend are so special. When you first try them there is something unique you haven’t smelt anywhere before.

This lavender extreme is another example. When I first smellt the cap was like wow… it is so charming and cozy. The first impression when sprayed was a lot of lavander, a very realistic one. Then in the drydown the cinnamon and other elements come in and it results in a creamy and pleasant lavander.
I don’t find myself wearing this in my day routine, I find it more like a perfume to go and sink tour nose into from time to time.

Nerds
By now, I am quite sure. I have spoiled my better half when it comes to perfume. He has developed a very exclusive taste, testing here and there with the scents that come in, but he really only likes a few. And unfortunately, those are always the ones that are in the higher price segment.

When he first raved about Tom Ford's Lavender Extreme, I emphasized, "I'm not buying that for you, it's way too expensive." Well, I had already said something similar about an Interlude Black Iris and still bought it. There are also good deals from time to time that allow me to indulge without a guilty conscience. People who are not totally obsessed with perfume like we are would probably groan, gasp, and throw their hands over their heads if they saw what we are still willing to pay, but that doesn't have to weigh on us too much.

So, Lavender Extreme. I personally found it quite beautiful, this refined spirit in the wonderful white Private Blends bottle, which shifts between my Sonett lavender soap and a delicate vanilla tobacco. Not too herbal for warm weather, not too sweet for cool weather. And, as Mr. Polly loves it, with particularly strong sillage and long-lasting power. Unfortunately, its vanilla note sometimes gives me vibes of Laura Biagiotti's Roma, like some vanillas that Mrs. Polly might partially, but never fully, achieve. My love-hate relationship with Roma is to blame. My husband, however, is not bothered in the least by this hint of my former, eccentric German teacher. The rather herbal and somewhat edgy lavender, which extends into the base, forms a wonderful counterpoint to this vanilla tobacco, which is supposed to be a tonka bean. This gentle mix of vanilla and green sometimes makes me think of my dearly beloved Heliotrope by the enchanting Lyn Harris. Just with power, punch, and everything that comes with it. And that is exactly what he finds beautiful. And I must admit, the scent suits him. And I enjoy smelling it on him.

It had to happen again. Soon we have our wedding anniversary, and I will probably have no choice but to gift him this scent nicely wrapped. One perfume enthusiast in the family is enough, and then such investments are just part of it from time to time, haha! But I also know that if I fell in love with a beautiful locomotive, no matter the gauge, he would buy it for me. Even for 1,000 euros. Nerds. That’s it!

At this point, another thank you to EveMist, whose samples Mr. Polly has completely emptied in just a few days.

And - shh! - he’s getting it. I just ordered it.

Batida de Coco
When I caught sight of this fragrance, my heart skipped a beat: a lavender scent - by Tom Ford! Could this finally be a Tom Ford for me? Since the others are all too loud and often disharmonious. And I absolutely love lavender, so nothing should go wrong if it also comes with the typical Ford sillage and longevity....
So I had to get a decant!
Sprayed on - and yes, THIS is the lavender I like. Just like the lavender sachets for the laundry. I briefly think of my beloved "Lavandula" from Penhaligon's. Very nice!
I indulge for, let's say, 5 minutes, and I'm already thinking about how I can get a bottle. Then, as you might have guessed, the fragrance takes a turn. For a few minutes, I feel reminded of my also dearly loved "Fourreau Noir" by Serge Lutens - lavender with a lovely tonka bean, slightly smoky. Very nice, but I already have that.
Well, I'll wait and see how it goes.
Attentive readers have of course noticed the title of this comment, and so the inevitable follows: After only a short time, this wonderful lavender dream turns into a coconut nightmare for me. The lavender is still there (not like in "Caron pour un homme," where it completely disappears for me after a short time and is replaced by an unbearably sweet vanilla) - but it is overshadowed by a cloud of warm coconut milk. Yes, to my nose, it smells like coconut. This cloud might actually be quite pleasant for most, and now and then "Fourreau Noir" shines through.

However, I do not like coconut at all; in fact, I hate it. Both on the tongue and in the nose.

Oh Mr. Ford - why coconut of all things?!
Sigh - yes, I wanted to like you so much... I prefer to refrain from giving a rating; for many noses, this will be a very pleasant, soft fragrance. The sillage is in a very good range for such a scent, at least 7.5. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the longevity; I'm going to wash this scent off now :-(

PS: Even more attentive readers might discover "Sweet Smoke" and "Popped Cherry" in my collection, which are Tom Ford dupes that I really, really like. If the originals are as good as the copies, I would like to revise my opinion that no Tom Ford is for me. Hope lives on!

Polaris
The imagined points of intersection of the extended Earth's axis with the celestial dome are commonly referred to as celestial poles. And very near the North Celestial Pole stands a star of the second magnitude, known as Polaris or the North Star. Since it hardly moves in contrast to its other companions, it serves as a good point of orientation in the sky.

As a star with an apparent brightness of the second magnitude, it does not immediately catch the eye or the nose and is by no means - as is often mistakenly assumed - the brightest star visible from Earth in the night sky. As a point of orientation, it is certainly a valuable addition in the vastness of the fragrance market regarding the lavender plant idea. A bit old-school yet still with some unique ideas, it now lights our way.

The bottle is great, fits the theme, and indeed has something polar star-like about it.

The scent is not the brightest, the strongest, or the newest. It doesn't want to be a superlative at all. This North Star is - as described above - a good scent point of orientation in its field.
It starts quite fresh, a bit citrusy. Then, of course, lavender, with wonderfully crafted herbal-fresh facets. A Mediterranean lavender that I have been able to perceive here and there in the south of France over the last few years. A soul plant. Undemanding, growing on rocks - winter hardy. The latter is supported by the rounding tonka bean (I also perceive a hint of cinnamon, but not coconut on my skin), with which it fades out: a soul scent. In the air, with some distance to the nose, it is slightly spicier, powdery. Up close, with the nose near the hand, it is fresh again, lavender-poking.

At the end of the celestial pole, Polaris beautifully illuminates my autumn - hardly circling, not pushing itself to the forefront.

My star of the second magnitude.

Nice herbaceous lavender, but that's it. No complexity and nothing extreme, apart from the price.

True lavender drier sheets. I love it, but it’s very simple. Good sleep scent or just fabulous daily wear. Good cheep dupe from Oil Perfumery.

Lavender, with a almondy and powdery tonka, lightly sweet and spicy. It reminds the bag of dried lavender, ready to be placed in a drawer.

Creamy gourmand leaning lavander-tonka scent. Lovely but unfortunately it reminds me too much of shower gells like Felce Azzura.

Straightforward dry, aromatic herbal lavender with a slight creaminess. Great for what it is.

There's plenty of lavender here
Tonka adds a sweet allure.
Surely well made, but a bit too much for me..*
