Pretty Little Liar
This is how I would define this creation by Tom Ford, which I would have called Poudreux. Why? Because Métallique has a very little metallic vibe, it is an ephemeral illusion that lasts only a few moments. Then the perfume takes off its mask and reveals its true soul, the powdery and vanillic one.
Métallique welcomes me with a great explosion of powdery, sweet, but above all, soapy accords. In my mind, the image of a creamy soap made with sweet peeled almonds takes shape, like a cuddly almond cream soap from Dove, not only for the scent of the soap but also for the creaminess. The dusty feeling is there, but it has nothing to do with that the buttery iris rhizome. I can barely perceive the flavour of the bergamot, which appears and lasts like the blink of an eye, or the spiciness of the pink pepper, which is a little more prominent. Instead, the opening is all aldehydes, so crunchy, like the pungent air on cool, humid autumn and winter mornings. The aldehydes used here give me a sense of fresh snow, away from the sparkling hairspray vibe of Chanel N°5 or the cold metallic vibe of Chrome Eau de Toilette. However, aldehydes are very modern and do not give an old-school vibe to the fragrance.
If there is a metallic reminiscence, that lasts only a few minutes. From now on, the perfume takes an extraordinary twist. Métallique is heavy on the heliotrope nectar. The smooth scent of the flower is reminiscent of almond with a hint of vanilla. The almond border comes out eagerly during the middle phase. So dominant that I hardly recognise hawthorn and lily of the valley. Another perfume that I have possessed with an overdose of heliotrope is Deep Vanilla, and these two give me the same sensations without being clones or imitations. Also, in the heart, there is a hint of anise, which could be because of the white flowers, but I could mislead by the almond note from the heliotrope.
When Métallique reaches the finish line, it does not change a lot compared to the middle stage, though the nutty and flowery accords slide towards a warm and sweet base made up of creamy woods and greedy spices. A note that I hardly perceive is the ambrette seeds. I don’t clearly feel that musky aspect of it that drives me crazy. Instead, a balsamic aura emanating from the Peruvian balsam now warmed for a long time by the skin surrounds the comforting vanilla and sandalwood. It smells like soapy vanilla.
It seems strange to me that no one else has found a certain resemblance to Hypnotic Poison Eau de Toilette, especially when the almond notes of heliotrope blend with those of sandalwood and vanilla. The result of this mixture is very similar to what we find in Hypnotic. There are many facets that I perceive in this perfume. If I had to summarise Métallique in three major chords, I would say aldehyde, talc, and vanilla. On my nose, the notes that stand out most in the three phases are aldehydes, heliotrope, and vanilla. Métallique seems to me more suitable for the cold seasons because of its sweet flavours; the balmy and vanillic base does not suit the hot weather. Men can wear as easily it. It is alluring regardless of gender. Performances are average, I can smell it all day long, and it stays close to my body, not offending nor cloying.
I base my opinion and review on a decant I have owned since Oct 2022.
