Yesterday, I was in the beautiful Master Perfumery to buy one of the Diptyque candles, and while testing, we talked about my preferred fragrance notes, which include, foremost, rose. Since I also like blackcurrant, especially in "L´Ombre dans l´Eau", that was the keyword that led the sales assistant to the Welton fragrances, and after the paper test, it went straight onto the skin, where both concentrations from Diptyque were already present nearby. I then requested a sample of this fragrance at the checkout so that I could test it again last night and today.
I must say that I found all 3 tests somewhat different, but I am already familiar with this phenomenon in myself.
I liked it best in the perfumery, where I perceived the blackcurrant the most.
But let's go in order.
The first moment is fresh, with a light fruitiness from the blackcurrant, but also somewhat sweet, which could come from the orange blossom, although I can't consciously perceive it. The rose appears after just a few seconds, and it is the Taif rose, which usually comes across as quite soapy, cool, and slightly bitter to me. However, in this fragrance, I find it rather warm, flanked by the other companions.
I can't identify the Moroccan rose that is supposed to be in the heart, as the strong soapiness of the Taif remains. Rose water is also mentioned, but I don't understand what that is supposed to do; it sounds like a silly gag.
The first half hour is when the fragrance is at its best; unfortunately, it fades quite quickly after that.
However, it remains in its warm, slightly sweet character, with notes of light woods and a bit of light leather mixed in.
In the base, the rose has stepped back and made room for a blend of sweetish, slightly woody, perhaps also slightly leathery notes, which I find rather unremarkable-not unpleasant, but nothing to remember.
The whole show is, overall, very close to the skin; you would need to apply several sprays for the environment to notice anything. But even then, after 1 hour, only about 20cm from the skin can be perceived.
Since I was wearing L´Ombre dans l´Eau on my upper arms, I could compare well. There was definitely a similarity, although I clearly prefer the Diptyque edt., which is spritzier, fresher, and also more herbal for summer, lacking this sweetness, although the Welton isn't really sweet, but perhaps fits more into the slightly cooler season.
I also compared it with "Rose de Petra" last night, as this also features the Taif rose, and I must say that this one is, in my opinion, of far better quality. My criticism is that Rose Empire lacks depth and strength, fades too quickly, loses character, and becomes quite arbitrary. Something stronger in the base would have pleased me more.
I wouldn't be willing to shell out €190 for 100 ml.
Overall, a pleasant fragrance that will surely be perceived nicely, provided one gets close enough to the wearer, although I find it rather feminine.
