of dark blue velvet cloaks and southern France
For a long time, I hesitated to write my first perfume review. Concerned that I might not capture the scent in all its facets and in its entirety, I kept making notes about the perfumes I tested and wore, yet I still shied away from a complete description. However, this morning, when I sprayed Flowerparty by Night again after some time, I knew this scent deserved to be illuminated more closely and honored with my first comment:
“I stand on the platform, waiting for the train that is supposed to take me to the city, which glitters enticingly on one side. On the other side, the last orange-red remnants of the colorful sunset are visible. Slowly, the night lays itself protectively, almost comfortingly, over everything. It unfurls its deep blue velvet cloak, inviting everyone to wrap themselves in it,” I wrote yesterday on my way home in my phone. The last days of September have begun, where the thermometer climbs to a pleasant 20 degrees during the day, but drops rapidly in the evening, so even this morning, outside the heating season, it is so cold that I am slightly shivering under the covers in my cozy suit and have no desire to get up. As my alarm chirps for what feels like the 10th time and my boyfriend's phone joins in with a Chinese gong, I venture into the chill. Unsure which scent best reflects my mood today.
Ready and made up, I stood somewhat perplexed in front of my perfume cabinet, searching for the right scent for the day, when my gaze fell upon the dark blue floral bottle of Flowerparty by Night. Instantly, the image of yesterday evening's scene came to mind, because that's exactly how this incredibly flattering scent feels: dark blue and velvety. Deep red, almost purple berries greet me (not quite as bright and light as those of the original version of Flowerparty), followed by a licorice-like sweetness, rounded off by velvety almonds. As it develops, the berries become increasingly muted and a creamy vanilla enters the scene. However, it is not a scent with a strong evolution; the warm, velvety-sweet character remains consistent from start to finish, with good longevity and sillage. Throughout the workday, I can still perceive it until the end of my shift. Contrary to its name, I hardly smell any flowers.
Whenever I wear it, I think back to a lovely time in early October 2014, when I attended a seminar in southern France, on the Côte d'Azur. Golden light meets earth warmed by the height of summer and a similarly warmed, calm Mediterranean Sea. A holiday resort designed in the style of an old French village, painted in sunflower yellow and juicy orange, with small houses, alleys, and bridges, souvenir shops, and an extremely delicate 3-course menu for lunch, as well as dinner. Yes, the French know how to live.
At this time of year, Flowerparty by Night blossoms most beautifully when summer is slowly cooling down, and the afternoons are still warm enough to enjoy life outdoors. In the evening, it makes a particularly good impression when something more substantial than Eau de Colognes is called for. I would even attribute seductive qualities to it, as this soft gourmand allows one to smell delectable without applying too much or being overly sweet.
And I only learned to appreciate its beauty at second glance: I ordered it out of sheer shopping desire. I had just ordered the original Summerparty online after testing it in-store, received the familiar promotional leaflets in my mailbox every month, and diligently studied them. One contained a scratch-off field for the by Night version, which I tested immediately and ordered 2 minutes later. However, these dry tests, as we perfume enthusiasts know, are not particularly representative. The entire sprightliness of the top note goes out the window, not to mention good longevity and scent progression.
When it arrived, the little blue floral bottle led a rather unspectacular existence in my closed wardrobe until I decided a few months later to take it with me on this business trip.
In short, there is a gem hidden at Yves Rocher that is worth discovering, even if it is not available in all stores; it is available online, highly affordable, and should not be missing from any gourmand and licorice lover's collection. I cherish my bottle, will ceremoniously dig it out every 9th month of the year, and disappear into some late summer night wrapped in its velvety blue cloak.
