Cinnamon bomb: some may like that, I unfortunately don't as much. Still quite enjoyable overall
TLDR: Opens the best out of all the dupes with a blast of citrus which is the most mass appealing, yet carries an overdose of cinnamon that sticks out a bit too much from the soapy fresh backbone. It starts to tingle my nose hairs in a way that is slightly unpleasant yet bearable. I still really like it but just not as much as Imaginary.
Like many others trying to avoid an absurd price tag, I have been on the hunt for a reasonably priced clone of Imagination for years now.
I own the following clones
- "Marwa / مروة | Arabiyat Prestige": it was the closest until I tried the Montagne but is still quite great! A few gripes are that the opening is quite sharp on the citrus-neroli aspect in a piercing kind of way, but that dissipates after a minute or so = not a big deal. Next down side is the performance is noticeably less than the others, about 4-6 hours. Not bad, yet definitely not good.
- Haramain Amber Oud Aqua Dubai but this was a 3mL decant which still allowed me to test it out for a week or so: definitely the loudest, longest lasting of the bunch but diverges from the OG quite early. As you may already know, it is basically pure soap with a fruity melon accord which some people do not enjoy. I liked it, but again I'm after what is most accurate.
- Imaginary: It honestly has the best balance of the 4, having a more modest opening with an alluring black tea musk. very well done, but the downsides here are higher cost per mL, it smells kinda synthetic up close and the performance is only slightly better than Marwa.
Of them all, this has the best opening with candied citruses, but the mid to dry down gets too spicy for me with the cinnamon; it starts to tingle my nose hairs in a bothersome way, likely due to the ambroxan which draws me to compare that feeling to Club de Nuit Intense Man Eau de Toilette; the same way that one tingles my nose due to nose-blinding ambroxan kind of occurs in this one. Am I alone in this comparison? Maybe, but that is the best way I can describe it to you. I try to overlook it but yet that feeling persists. Maybe it will calm down with time, but I'm not holding my breath.
Overall it's really nice, with great longevity and seems like the most "designer" take on it but I just wish it had more of a creamy powdery dry down like the OG. I use it to layer with Imaginary for longevity. Unfortunately, I have already had the pervading thought to sell it as I have been gravitating towards the Montagne. I will have some patience and keep giving it a chance but it's hype/enchantment have quickly faded from my perspective. 8/10
