Forever Amber............
For many decades I have owned two pieces of ambergris, which are in tiny turned soapstone boxes. Occasionally I sniff them and even after so many years they have retained their incomparable warm balsamic fragrance. I had bought them in Munich, where I had moved shortly before. It was in the seventies, i.e. still in the time when there were still Indian shops with batik clothes and Indian perfume oils on Leopoldstrasse.

Perfumes, with a lot of amber, I found primarily in men's fragrances, especially when woods are still in play...
With Ambra Sauvage it was completely different at the first go. A blind purchase here in the souk proved to be an absolute hit. It has become a favourite Ambra Sauvage fragrance at the moment, but I would like to treat a man to it at any time.
The scent is complex, but the main actor always remains amber. The different components appear over many hours, in a ravishing interplay, which seems like an erotically orchestrated tango to me. Some perfumes have something so bewitching that I listen to music or see a dance, like the Gotan Project. A couple is dancing here, the bad woman/man fights, caused by melancholy and pain, has left this couple behind long ago. He no longer seeks to subdue her, she no longer plays pushpull games to torment him Self-forgotten, playful and unintentional, they give themselves to the figures - turning, stopping abruptly, looking into each other's eyes..............
The fragrance starts off peppery lavender fresh, immediately an amber hits through, but in an incredible balsamic depth, lasts for hours.
What is noticeable on my skin is that the base notes are dominated by styrax frankincense. I suspect that it is Styrax bark which, when I smoke it, appears slightly more bitter than the resin.
Here it is fused with a patchouli of high quality. This styrax note gives the perfume an indescribably tart and timeless elegance.
You'd think we were dealing with a serious amber scent for gentlemen. Well, it's not. Two wonderful teammates, iris and a light vanilla, give the fragrance the fairy magic that makes it uniquely unisex.
The bottle is beautiful in its simplicity. The D'Annik Goutal seal is embossed on the bottom of the bottle and it carries a valuable label with the fragrance name. The cap is metal and gold plated The box is exceptionally beautifully designed. It looks like a shrine, which can be opened through hinged doors and in which the flacon rests like a small treasure.
The perfume is perfect for the cooler season that is now beginning. With its amber-amber warmth, it carries the memory of warm, linden summer days in its heart. Its balsamic depth may ignite the hunger for love in the yearning and let the game of approach and distance begin, which is the magic of love.
