For me, the better Herod
Maison Alhambra really knows how to surprise me! When I heard about Hercules, I wasn't too skeptical, as I was already familiar with Perseus as a Pegasus clone and it completely convinced me. After ordering this Herod alternative, I was full of expectation and I was not disappointed. Even more: it replaces Herod for me in many ways.
What I appreciate about Herod is the opulent and quite distinctive tobacco sweetness, which I particularly enjoy in the cold seasons. It envelops me and, in my experience, has a very attractive effect on my surroundings. What I like less is the heaviness of the scent, especially at the beginning, and the density of the nuances in the middle phase. This is where Hercules comes into play.
It opens with a cinnamon note that I cannot find in the finesse of Herod. It evokes associations of cinnamon rolls in me, but less sweet and not as gourmand as one might think. The spiciness gives it a very masculine touch for me. Compared to its predecessor, Hercules seems somehow airier and more transparent at the start, which makes it extremely pleasant.
After this wonderful top note, I smell tobacco and labdanum - both scents that I immensely enjoy! Only then do I realize that the tobacco note was already present at the beginning and created that airiness I described. The cinnamon recedes a bit and transforms into a kind of vanilla cream, which, however, comes across as quite bitter and with a hint of smokiness. At this point, I perceive Hercules as exclusively masculine and spicy, warming and very attractive.
The base is exactly what a base is: the foundation of this composition. It is vanilla, sweet, now less smoky, and terribly pleasant. Time and again, this memory of tobacco comes back, which seems almost a bit woody and dry. For me personally, the base is very natural and by no means synthetic.
So why is it the better Herod for me? Because of its uniqueness in composing almost identical notes in such a way that they appear less heavy and overwhelming. Hercules is not just like "a few sprays of Herod," but a transparent and thus much more everyday-friendly interpretation of this fragrance direction for me. Yes, they are strikingly similar, but Hercules unfolds a different reality for me and has this beautiful twist of being both creamy sweet and dry, so it continually surprises my nose and simply lets me enjoy myself. And I believe that's exactly what it's all about!
