An Initio For Absolute Beginners
Here we are, Bade'e Al Oud - Oud for Glory is also a piece of my puzzle. At first glance, the smell resembles many things, and none of them. Although its olfactory pyramid is shamelessly akin to "Oud for Greatness | Initio", which for the record, I don't know and don't think I've ever met before, for a moment, I seem to recognize that burnt sugar facet of Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum. But immediately after, it changes and resembles the dirty pineapple of "Aventus (Eau de Parfum) | Creed" to change again and take on a unique, spicy, earthy, intriguing, and seductive attitude. Therefore, I will not compare the two, which you can find galore on the web, but rather an authentic experience of this extremely rare black pearl.
If you are familiar with agarwood's resin, you should know that it goes very well with some notes, for example, floral rose, spicy saffron, gourmand honey, clean musk, and last but not least dirty patchouli. To the latter, already earthy and dark by itself, it adds a veil of subtlety, making it a little smoky and coarser. And it is precisely in this form that I face the oud-patchouli duo in this essence. Modern patchouli together with a cleaned oud, as if the couple had been baptized, confirmed, cleaned up nicely, and last but not least, sanctified before marrying them. It is definitely an oud for beginners, a little too challenging and off-putting when you're first starting out on your scent journey. However, it's also not too harsh, sharp, punchy, medicinal, rugged, or animal oud.
Cologne Bade'e Al Oud has a peculiar smell far from ordinary design fragrances because it focuses on a solid spicy, and smoky aroma. It opens with a blast of fresh and burnt accord consisting of lavender and oud wood. The smokiness immediately pops off my skin. I imagine a bonfire where agarwood and lavender spikes burn together and produce a cloud of thick, aromatic smoke. There is more than a tinge of warm spiciness from bitter saffron and sweet nutmeg, which blends well with the fragrant bluish lavender. Of course, the lavender is not a key player here, while the spices are slightly more prominent.
The more it grows, the smokier and more intricate it becomes. Please try Oud for Glory on your skin, as it may reveal only some of its magnificence when sprinkled on blotting paper. I get the meditative smokiness of frankincense, not that of an ashtray's bottom. The lovely smokiness of oud runs through the entire life of the fragrance, starting from the top, and is present until the end of the perfume. In the heart, oud is scarcely highlighted by a tinge of patchouli.
Oud For Glory is not linear and changes once more when approaching the dry-down stage. The initial freshness of the lavender and central smokiness of the oud now take a step back and leave room for something more earthy and musky. I pick up a little clean and oriental-like muskiness. Instead, the patchouli is a bit more prominent. The oud is still there and alternates its woodiness with the patchouli sweetness. A pleasant spicy-sweet-woodiness is what remains longer on my skin.
There is no denying that this is an oud. However, since you will stand out from other surrounding people when you wear this, and you're going to smell luxury, I see it fitting for special events, social dinners, and fancy parties. The performance of this Arabic jewel on my skin is not fantastic; not as heavy as you expect it to be. It won't fill the room, but people surrounding you might notice it. And it lasts a few hours on my skin and even longer on my clothes. Its ingredients make me reach for it during the cold weather, let's say, fall and winter months. However, since there is no trace of sweetness in there, it could work well even on a summer evening outdoor party, with just a couple of sprays. Although it is targeted at any gender, to me, it has a more masculine slant firmly.
I base my impressions and reviews on a bottle I have owned since November 2022.
