I love Oolong tea. I've tried many varieties and have come to love them. My enthusiasm even motivated me to travel to Taiwan to discover more tea types there. It's a thing.
Some time ago, while drinking a Milky Oolong tea, I thought: I would love to smell this scent all day long - and I set out on a quest. I came across
Oolong Tea and was immediately disappointed to find that it can only be purchased in Hong Kong. Fortunately, a perfumer from Italy managed to get a bottle and sold a few decants in the Souk. A few days later, I was able to start the first stage of my Oolong tea perfume journey.
A spray on my wrist. The typical aromatic-floral Oolong scent unfolds. At the same time, a completely different note emerges: I would describe it as earthy-chocolatey. Interestingly, this note only develops on my skin - my boyfriend's skin remained unaffected. I find this note a bit disturbing; it reminds me of a dark Gaba Milky Oolong with a malty note. I'm more of a green Oolong notes team. I remember reading that the perfumer did not think of pure Oolong tea, but rather Oolong tea with pastry and jam - quite fitting, actually.
After a while, the chocolatey note largely fades into the background, and a sweet floral note comes to the fore. Even though it’s not listed, it reminds me much more of Osmanthus than of Jasmine. I think that’s what makes the honey note.
I smell a small tea house in Taiwan, wooden floors, brewing Oolong tea with honey, pastries, a bouquet of Asian flowers.
The scent remains pleasantly aromatic for a while, developing more into the woody-floral. Unfortunately, after a few hours, I don’t like it as much as at the beginning - somehow only the sweet floral note remains, and it comes across as a bit outdated. (but that’s nitpicking at a high level)
Overall, the scent comes quite close to the promised Oolong tea - however, I would have wished it to be a bit more modern and unisex - just like the bottle conveys at first glance. Somehow, there’s still a heaviness that makes it seem a bit old-fashioned in my eyes.
That was the first stage of my Oolong journey - I still have more scents on my wish list. It remains exciting.
Milky Dragon or
Tea Service will probably be next.
