the scent of an idealized first kiss

Universal Flowering perfumes are so emotional. This is all the anxious, heart-pounding energy of a girl in a sea foam and peach sundress sharing a cream soda with her crush at the carnival. Is it just the Tilt-a-Whirl, or does he have butterflies too? Like Annabel’s Birthday Cake, this perfume has a hazy quality evoking a memory rather than a present moment. My first kiss wasn’t nearly so sweet, but with this I can pretend it was.

cutie fruity

Raspberry-lime sorbet and frothy cream soda, married by bubblegum-toned tuberose. It’s creamy yet tart, candied in a sweet-and-sour way. Acid green and hibiscus pink. The lime is not shy. (And such a treat!). There’s something cold about this otherwise tropical confection. Like coming in from the beach to a bracingly air-conditioned ice cream parlour. I generally shy from tuberose but this might be my favourite one to date – something about it echoes of the OG Juicy Couture parfum, only fresher and zestier. It packs enough of a sugar punch that I wouldn’t reach for this if I had a headache, but I’d never call it cloying. Unfortunately the drydown on my skin drifts a bit soapy, otherwise it’d be an auto-buy for the summer.

Mental Snapshot: ‘00s airbrushed t-shirts and platform flip flops. First dates on the boardwalk. A key lime pie, flourished with birthday icing. The point where prom afterparty becomes sleepover. Midori sours and hibiscus punch. Miami Vice sunsets. Sabrina Carpenter prancing about a froyo shop.

When I sniffed the scent, one thing immediately came to mind: "Mourning Girlhood in your Womanhood." You have arrived in life, slowly getting to know the rules and challenges of life, enjoying the perks of being an adult, and yet sometimes, when overwhelmed, seeing familiar faces or objects takes you back to a time of carefree joy, a rollercoaster of emotions, and the blossoming of femininity.

Hot summer days are made bearable with refreshing ice and soda, in the tall grass, the games of tag become the Olympics of carefreeness, and in the next moment, you taste the bitterness of a scrape on your knee or the unwanted feelings towards the boy who sits with you on the bus every morning, collecting flowers for your own potions and the first tasty Lip Smackers in your new crossbody bag. Nostalgic, sparkling, and beautiful. This scent reveals itself as a roaring fruity-floral-synthetic time machine.

It is not a youthful fragrance, but it definitely makes you look back into the past, sometimes with a laughing and sometimes with a crying eye...
