marshmallow academia
sweet marshmallows over dusty book pages with a creamy touch and of subtle woodiness. Much sweeter than I would’ve thought but in such a creamy, cocooning, and cozy library esque way. The orris is the star, it’s rich, smooth, earthy, and sweet with a sandalwood base. Don’t get much carrot which would’ve been a lovely treat if I did, but this is such a charming bookish scent!

A bibliophile swimming in marshmallows
With Sorce scents blowing up in the fragcomm, I came to share my thoughts about one of my personal favorites from the house. If you’ve never encountered an atmospheric scent in a literal sense, this is a great one to start with. Even with my background and as lover of the sciences, English Major instantly transports me back to my collegiate days stuck in the library, face glued to textbooks and other forms of print, studying my ass off so I can finish school.

EM starts off with someone slapping you in the face with an old, worn out library book, and then subsequently, shoving some kind of steamed hot drink in your face. The paper scent can definitely be off putting for those not used to atmospherics, but the sharpness of the paper doesn’t dominate for too long before it’s softened by the marshmallow and iris. Besides the added woodiness I get from the sandalwood, I do not pick up on the carrot seeds or other notes. It’s sweet, it’s creamy, and it is just ever so slightly woody/papery as it continues to dry down. EM falls in the same category as Whispers in the Library and Library Perfume and other kinds of scents that not only provide you with olfactive nostalgia, but give you that “experience in a bottle”.

While it’s not necessarily an original concept for a fragrance, English Major’s novelty lies in the fact that it smells nothing like the others. The paper note is very authentic, and it is indeed very wearable. It’s been great for the fall and winter, and I think Caitlyn did an excellent job on this one. Will definitely be upgrading my 15 ml to a 30 or 50 once it runs out!

Light academia in a bottle
This smells exactly like I thought it would. Dry, dusty woods, the smell of old book pages, and a marshmallowy sweetness that blends with these other notes instead of overpowering them. Truly the English major/book nerd’s gourmand, “light academia” in a bottle. I would compare it to Liis Bo, but dustier and creamier, or Cirrus Snooze, but woody instead of floral. The scent conjures images of dusty old bookshelves lined with secondhand books. I think Sorce accomplished exactly what they set out to do here.

I’ve been let down by so many book/library fragrances but this is everything I hoped it would be.

An English Major in a bottle
English Major is my favorite perfume from Sorcellerie Apothercary. It's sweet and it definitely smells like a refined student majoring in English! This student is wealthy, well read, and dressed in the finest natural fibers. The library book note smells like brand new books. I then mostly get the creaminess of the orris absolute and sandalwood & the sweetness of the marshmallow and decalepis hamiltonii.

If I had to use other perfumes to relate this perfume to, it has the sweetness level of Kilian's Love, Don't be Shy and the creaminess of Lush's American Cream.

Marshmallows, old books, and fall leaves
I wasn’t in love with this scent at first. I found myself put off by something that smelled too dirty to me that I assumed is the mushroom note. I put the sample aside and forgot about it for months. When I picked it back up again I swear it smelled different, but I think my nose and preferences are also evolving. There is definitely an “old book” smell, vanillic with a slight tang to it, and an earthiness from the orris and Decalepis hamiltonii absolute, but it’s also quite sweet from the marshmallow. It’s a cross of so many types of sent I love - the musk and iris of You Eau de Parfum, Sonic Flower, Bound, Fleur de Peau Eau de Parfum, et al.; sweet gourmand vanilla notes; and a true paper/old book scent that I’ve really only smelled in Bibliophilia. If you’re a fan of Whispers in the Library and are mourning about its discontinuation, this isn’t a dupe but it’s in the same genre, more interesting, maybe a touch less crowd-pleasing. Sorce does some masterful scents and this is no exception. Also, it’s quite long lasting which is something I find rare. 99% of perfumes I try (even notoriously “beast mode” scents) seem to disappear by lunchtime, but not this one.

Like sitting in a library in front of an open book and eating marshmallows. There's a field of irises. It's so perfectly blended.

Unique & perplexing. Can't tell if I like it, but feel compelled to keep sniffing myself. There's a certain je ne sais quoi about it :)

English major approved! The aged books + smoky mallow combo is charming. Avoids the flat, oily drydown most Sorce scents fall victim to.
