Everyday meets special and classy, right in the middle
Robert Graham Valour is a classy release, alongside two others from the house, from 2016, an easygoing yet interesting mix of clary sage, coffee, and amber. A little sweet, a little dirty, a little woody. Not too heavy, not too light. It has the vibe of both an everyday scent (for, say, all but the hottest weather) as well as something dressed up and special, and in that respect, it’s highly versatile as a targeted men’s option, though frankly it’s not stereotypically masculine, but rather just more mature-leaning, so I think anyone could wear this. It’s not groundbreaking but has that balance between being comfortably familiar and being intriguing to the point of wanting to continue smelling it. And it performs well overall, not with much projection but good longevity.

I was fortunate to find a 100ml bottle at Marshalls a little over a year ago that I bought blind for $30, but the retail on this is still $90 (for final sale) on the Robert Graham website, so from that, I take that it’s been discontinued. It’s priced even higher on some secondary markets, it seems. At $30 it’s a steal, but it’s useful enough that the retail cost is reasonable, as well. There is also a decanter size on the website, $198 for 250ml, also on final sale.

8 out of 10

simple note pyramid that works

Manly and confident, great coffee note for about first three hours.

Then the sage (sweet) note takes over midway through the scent's existence. That might turn some people off, a bit too sweet for me.

Then the drydown mellows out towards the end but it isn't weak, still projects.

I love the strong coffee in the beginning but kinda put off by the way it dies down and becomes sweet.

If you wait it out it then presents itself as a respectable aroma.

American Coffee
Opinions on American coffee can be divided. The kind served in diners, supermarkets, or gas stations as 'bottomless' (meaning you can refill as long as you want or can) is known to be rather thin and - although kept warm on hot plates - always scalding hot. It’s no surprise that there was a huge market for Starbucks and the like to tap into, while in Europe, you can actually buy decent coffee on almost every corner (although Starbucks is always full here too). I actually quite like American coffee - even the thin kind.

Moreover, coffee is a significant part of American everyday culture. While you can do this here in Germany (and I do), it somehow feels more authentic on the other side of the Atlantic, as seen in countless films: a car. In the cupholder, a large paper cup of coffee. A road, preferably along an ocean, but if necessary, the suburban highway of a city. A pick-up on the left. A pick-up on the right. The radio. Where you only realize after half an hour that it’s actually also Christian. America.

Valour is the third fragrance from Californian designer Robert Graham, which I tried on a wonderful afternoon (with coffee!) within smelling distance of the beach and the Pacific. Like its two brothers, Fortitude and Courage, it has quite a bold name - and like them, it is ultimately a very pleasing and relaxed, undramatic scent. Thematically, it is dedicated to coffee - more everyday filter coffee than 'Double Chocolate Hazelnut Latte', as it lacks any overly pronounced sweetness, which is very pleasant. However, the coffee note is also not too bitter or too dark, but rather has a mineral quality, sometimes almost cool. Valour is - this it shares with its brothers - a distinctly masculine scent: a bit of bright herb, a little warm wood - and a hint of worn saddle leather. That doesn’t mean a woman couldn’t wear it well too. She could.

Conclusion: the car windows open and the road empty. Half a liter of coffee in the cupholder, John Denver or Johnny Cash on the radio. The spring sun on the trees and seagulls over the sea. Coffee and wood and sun. Heaven.

Strange love...
Is it the coffee that intrigues me?
No idea...
Maybe the amberwood?
It definitely lingers.

The top note briefly reminds me of "Napoli (Eau de Toilette)" before a slightly mineral-synthetic coffee and dry wood take over.

I find it just mediocre. Leather and somehow dry-woody. I can hardly recognize coffee. Maybe I'm not man enough for it ;)
