Drinking cognac and sucking on berry candy in a dusty old chateau
Wow! This scent is very, very weird to me.

It smells like two songs or two movies playing at the same time. One is youthful, sweet, juicy, and bright pinkish purple. The other is spirituous, antique, the warm amber color of an expensive aged liquor.

Or perhaps this fragrance has a background and a foreground. The background is dusty and evocative of a library (but only if we're talking about a private library in a big old chateau where the beautiful antique furniture of an eccentric duke is gathering dust.) It's also very alcoholic, like cognac or whiskey. The foreground is bright fruit candy, almost too sweet, and clashing so much with the background as to be dissonant.

This is actually the first Byredo fragrance I've ever smelled. Are all of them this weird?? I'm so intrigued.

A gift from the patisserie wrapped with baby pink silk ribbons
I think Akro nailed it with both the name of the fragrance and the color that they chose. Smelling this makes me think of a pretty girl who bakes--she's sweet, light-hearted, fun.

On the opening I smell quite a lot of rose, to the point where it almost eclipses the other notes. But pretty soon the scent becomes more balanced with gourmand almond, praline, and vanilla. I get a little bit of lychee but it's a much more powdery scent than a juicy one.

When I say "powdery" here, I have to think of almond flour. It's dry but it's still rich and has body. It's not a cosmetic powderiness, more of a powdered sugar and almond flour being gently sifted type of powder.

Wearing this the whole day, I felt charming, youthful, and kind of romantic. That felt pretty great and I look forward to using up the rest of my decant!

Opinions from some of my friends:
Friend A: It's beautifully sweet but not too sweet, and it smells expensive.
Friend B: It's too powdery and sweet, it's missing spice that would make it interesting.

Smooth herbal vanilla magic ... to lull you to sleep
I was very intrigued to try a fragrance with a chamomile note, and one that's been described as a non-sweet vanilla. And yes it is all of these things but it's also A LOT of lavender!

In the opening, the fragrance is very herbal, like a warm cup of Sleepy Time tea sweetened with agave. The lavender really shines and the chamomile is a soft voice in the background.

On the drydown, it's a magestic, calming vanilla that's not too sweet, not too green, not too herbal, just very balanced.

I can definitely imagine this being a signature scent for someone... someone who wears mohair sweaters and journals in the mornings and speaks in a poised, elegant voice. Smooth and aspirational.

Elegant granola mom fragrance
Bon Parfumeur's 106 is immediately likeable in its simplicity. It's rose, vanilla, and something distinctly "organic shop", distinctly "sustainable lifestyle but make it chic".

To me, this fragrance is a woman who shops at the small, local organic grocery store for quinoa, hazelnut spread, and clay-based shampoo. She is 36 years old, has 2 boys aged 5 and 3, a job in local government, and chestnut-colored hair that's naturally-dyed. She recycles and goes to protests and is an all-around solid person. She believes in healing herbs and also tarot.

I like to think, if my mother had been the kind of person to wear this perfume, my childhood would have been pretty blissful. Now I just wear it myself to feel grounded, kind, maternal, but still sexy in a herbal tea-drinking kind of way.

A "nice", agreeable lemon and vanilla scent.
This really is a nice scent. The problem is, I wasn't expecting "nice"! I wanted to be challenged a little bit more. Smelling this was like going to a niche, bedroom pop show, only to find out the whole concert is one person playing Bach's lullabies very gently on the piano.

The drydown is particularly "classical", reminding me of warm vanilla custard. The opening is just as boring, but with lemon curd as the first scent impression.

But really, why am I getting mad at this perfume for doing what it does? It does it very well, it's actually extremely pleasant, and I find myself reaching for the sample because it is so very comforting. I guess I just wish it was called "Warm Hug au Citron" or something cute like that, leaving the name "Unknown Pleasures" free for a more punk perfume.
