The Language of Baby Powder

Let’s get this out of the way immediately: the name and the bottle are misleading. There is nothing cold or icy here, no frozen heights or snowy Alps. Instead, this is all powdery periwinkle florals.

The opening holds an initial hint of pine, but mostly it’s…baby powder. Just straight baby powder, wafting through the air every time I move my arms. I guess maybe this is the lilac, but that note doesn’t usually have a baby powder effect on me. Oh well, onward and upward.

2 hours later and the baby powder is joined by a light dusting of cashmeran, accompanied by an increase in delicate purple florals and…yet more baby powder.

The next few hours continue on much the same: powdery florals, florals and powder, powder and florals. You get the idea.

It isn’t unpleasant (in fact it’s rather cozy in that bubble-bath-before-bed kind of way), but it’s so far from what I expected given the notes and marketing that I’m left feeling a bit bemused by the whole experience.

If you're looking for ice cold realness, I recommend Útilykt Eau de Parfum or maybe Craft , depending on your tastes.

Sharp but smooth, the air and the woods

Finally doing a proper sampling of the latest release from Imaginary Authors, The Language of Glaciers, a sharp, dry, woodsy blend that has a sort of iris-adjacent, cashmere-led sharpness that’s quite powerful, seasoned by juniper and white pine with a florality that is attributed to lilac, a note I’m not too familiar with. There are some familiar aspects of TLOG elsewhere in the IA catalogue, so it smells familiar, in a way. It offers the sharpness of Telegram with the sweetness; the dry woody quality of Every Storm a Serenade but without the musky semi-animalic semi-sweet raw quality; the dryness of O, Uknown! without its tea. Evolution-wise, it’s predictably quite a bit sharper in the opening and dries down a bit smoother and ever so slightly sweeter. I like it, but as with O, Unknown!, I think it might take a little time for me to warm up to it further.

This is priced at $105 for 50ml in EDP concentration, now the standard pricing for the line that had only increased finally after more than 7 years, which is really remarkable, and is still quite reasonable around the $2/ml mark. Like the rest of the line, it’s sold via both the house website a number of US retailers like Perfumology. The house site also offers a travel size at $42 for 14ml.

Quiet, Understated, For Introverts

Opens up strongly with pine before quickly mingling with strong notes of lilac and maybe cashmere (slight powderyness, I think this is where it's coming from?). The lilac and cashmere pretty quickly overtake any top pine notes and turn this into a softer floral powder on my skin, accentuated just barely by a fresh conifer. Unfortunately I don't get any impressions of snow either theoretically or subjectively. To me, this is less of a dead-of-winter scent and more of a very early spring one, where the greenery is juuuuust beginning to poke through the snow.

Unfortunately, this doesn't last very long and is a very faint skin scent a little less than 2 hours in. The scent lost it's pine about halfway through and what was left was a soft, powdery floral - no bracing winter or glaciers to be had. Overall, the scent itself isn't bad per se. It's straightforward, safe, and as something advertised as a 'scent for introverts', I can see this being the case. It doesn't announce itself and doesn't project very far, smells somewhat intimate and has said its polite goodbyes before you get to the end of the conversation.

I don't dislike it, and I'll try it a few more times to see if I change my mind. The bottle and art itself is beautiful and I'd have loved to have it on my shelf had the scent not fallen short of both longevity and my expectations.

Update: 14/11/2024 - Turns out, I dislike this after putting on a full wear. I sprayed twice under my shirt and once over, and was immediately overcome by cloyingly floral powder with a strange sweetness. Where was the conifers, however faint, that I got before? Nowhere to be found. Instead it was all just powder and a sort of synthetic floral that reminded me somewhat of a freshly cleaned public washroom?

I was amazed by how different this was from the single spray on my shoulder I did to test it. How unfortunate.

Alpine breeze in the springtime

This wasn't as 'icy' as I imagined it would be, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

At first spray, it's crisp and fresh, floral and aromatic, a little spicy and almost soapy. The lilac, forget-me-not and blue bugle notes come together to make the loveliest profile of purple florals. I normally don't appreciate them in perfume, but these are fresh and fragrant instead of sharp and powdery as the usual suspects (violet and iris) often are. The juniper and pine are also apparent in the open, giving the scent a subtle fresh/green spice as well as a vibrant coniferous and woodsy tinge.

It remains the same for the first few hours, with the green spicy quality slowly fading and the purple florals becoming a bit stronger. Any sort of soapiness fades by hour four, leaving behind nothing but the purple floral and evergreen notes.

The cashmere and snow also emerge around this time. The cashmere adds some warmth and a little powder, while the watery/aquatic aspect of the snow lends some refreshment, further softening the scent and making it very smooth and comforting. It remains this way for the remainder of the wear. This lasted on my skin for over 10 hours, only fading close to the skin in the final few hours.

In the brief window when the snow note is most prominent, this smells like making snow angels while a friend showers you with lilac petals. For most of the wear though, it's an alpine breeze in the springtime. A chilly wind sweeping down the mountain and over the freshly blossomed flowers—a final vestige of winter rearing its head going into the new season.

Overall, it's beautifully purple and green. I can't get over how wonderful the purple florals are here—they are the star of the fragrance for me.

Green and fresh pine morphs into a scent fit for cold temps

Ending the week with my last Imaginary Authors decant. Fitting for here in Canada where fall is starting to settle in the tree leaves and the cold, crisp air. Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but it's a lovely, creative fragrance.

The beginning is strong, with an almost overwhelming spicy, fresh and green pine scent that is similar to eucalyptus. After a few minutes, the pine note recedes a little bit and the perfume fully blooms in place. We've got some fresh florals with some spiciness from the juniper and some comforting warmth from cashmere. It's overall pretty fresh, green and floral. It's quite refreshing, although I don't get that crisp, snow and glacier vibe. Pine does remain throughout the scent although it tones down a little bit as time passes. It's on the verge of the functional aspect of a pine tree car freshner which is the main reason why it won't be making it into my collection. The drydown becomes soft cashmere and floral, quite reminiscent to a floral body lotion I think I've smelled somewhere. Very comforting after all of this green freshness. I still think it's a very nice fragrance and may suit people who love green and fresh fragrances. I really enjoyed trying this one out!
