90s aftershave before the Wallstreet shift
Fragrances often live from the name and label, so with American Psycho you naturally have one or two movie scenes in mind.

I approached the fragrance with an open mind and didn't look at any fragrance notes or reviews.

The first time I sprayed it on, I had Christian Bale in mind.
But not covered in blood with an axe in his hand, but clean-shaven in front of the mirror in a perfectly cleaned bathroom in New York applying aftershave.

The fragrance opens very fresh with a beautiful note of saline, which for me remains the main player throughout the fragrance.

Later, light woody notes are added to round off the fragrance. It remains very clean throughout and retains its aftershave feel.

The performance is very solid for such a fresh fragrance on my skin, there are many other fresh candidates that give up the ghost earlier.

Many people may find the fragrance too one-dimensional, but that's what makes it special for me. Simply smooth, clean and without rough edges.
Extremely suitable for everyday use, no danger of scaring off employees at work.

Definitely worth a test, but you have to be aware that you're not getting a complex, multi-layered fragrance with a crazy scent progression here.
You get a fragrance that leaves you smelling fresh, well-groomed and cool. In other words, the side of Patrick Bateman that the public gets to see and not the side behind the facade.

"Let's smell Paul Allen's cologne"
Even before the first spray, the fragrance notes suggest that the bloody, brutal character traits of Patrick Bateman are not being captured here. Rather, 16-96 interprets the more subtle subtext of "American Psycho".

The fragrance is clean, fresh, flawless - and that is precisely its message. It is pleasing, smells expensive, but somehow remains interchangeable. No special recognition value and nothing that arouses any great emotions. And that is precisely the essence of Bateman. The book "American Psycho" questions whether he even exists as an individual or whether he is merely a copy of a financial yuppie from the 80s: "I simply am not there". The zeitgeist of a generation that defines itself by perfection, but not by personality. Everyone strives to look flawless, not to step out of line and to shine only through status symbols: Hairstyles, suits, business cards - and probably fragrances too.

In American Psycho, perfumes play a role again and again and are sometimes described with a similar level of detail as pieces of music. Bateman's signature fragrance is Green Irish Tweed by Creed. A luxurious classic that deliberately sets itself apart from the scents of the masses. In contrast, he despises more popular compositions such as Drakkar Noir and Obsession for Men, which he finds too ordinary. But for him, his own perfume is nothing more than another status symbol. A calculated choice, without emotional meaning. It is not there to express him as an individual, but simply to make him look better than the others. Another layer of his mask.

In this respect, I see this fragrance as a good representation of history. "American Psycho" smells pleasant, was brought out by a niche brand and is accordingly exclusive. A fragrance that smells good and will appeal to many, but reveals nothing about the wearer - because that's exactly what it was made for.

The Big Apple as a yuppie in the 80s
New York, mid-80s. You are a successful young businessman in the city that never sleeps. After a hard day's work, most of which has consisted of listening to music, you finally want to have some fun! You freshen up, spray on the YSL Pour Homme from 1971 and call the best restaurant in town, Dorsias, to reserve a table. After all, you have a nice companion with you and you have promised her that you will take her there. When you tell the Dorsias employee that you are planning to come by, the employee laughs at you and hangs up the phone. No friendly "I'm sorry", no goodbye - nothing. Just a laugh and then nothing more. You are now standing there in the cloud of perfume from YSL Pour Homme and feel nothing but emptiness, anger and the desire for revenge.
This or something similar could be the scenario in which you can use the fragrance based on the cult film "American Psycho". In the scene where Patrick Bateman is freshening up, you can recognize YSL Pour Homme 1971 in his wardrobe. Based on the fragrance notes, you can see what 19-69 was based on. There are many similarities, such as citric notes in the top note, garden carnation in the heart note and cedar + sandalwood in the base note. Unfortunately, I don't know the YSL and can't draw a comparison in terms of scent. But you can definitely say that the fragrance goes in a very old-school direction. It is a fresh, masculine fragrance that smells very herbaceous. It reminds me a little of the moment when you leave a sauna, step into the shower and smell the herbs from the sauna infusion while steam shoots up your nose. The fragrance also reminds me a little of Torino 23 by Xerjoff. Longevity of approx. 6-7 hours is fine.
The fragrance is really a very nice everyday fragrance for men who like the old-school direction. That's exactly how I imagined the fragrance. Nevertheless, I would have liked to see some of Bateman's character integrated into it. After all, he was a psychopath and serial killer - you could add a few metallic notes, for example. As it is, it's just Bateman's perfume and not the smell of Bateman going about his not-so-usual everyday life.

Marketing boomerang or when the naming does the fragrance a disservice
A fragrant homage to a psychopath and murderer? To a book (and later movie) that contains some of the most disturbing scenes I know (cue the rat!)? A unisex fragrance for a narcissistic, misogynistic character? Okay, maybe I missed the well-hidden social criticism at the time, but that's only of secondary importance at this point.

However, I find the target group point quite valid, because although the fragrance is not marketed as a men's fragrance, the name and marketing are, in my opinion, aimed more at a male audience. Quote 19-69: " In the creation of American Psycho EdP I tapped into a few key elements from the book [...]: Bateman's vanity rituals, fine sparkling water, icy sorbet and Wall Street in the 1980s." There probably weren't that many women in the Wall Street offices of the 80s - at most as champagne waitresses (or adoring the Coca-Cola man... oh no, that was the 90s).
This "male focus" is already reflected here in the WL/ML distribution with 30:60. And that's a shame!!! BECAUSE the fragrance is really unisex wearable. And Psycho is pretty much nothing here, you're used to something completely different from other brands - yay BTSO and ELdO I'm looking in your direction! - are used to something completely different. The name and the marketing are the only polarizing factors here, the fragrance itself is a pleasant newcomer without any eye-catching disruptive notes (unless the jasmine turns out to be super nasty indolic...)

Although it starts with a clear, fresh yet delicate aquatic note, it avoids the sports shower gel trap well and can be classified more in the "walk by the sea" corner à la A'mmare or Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne. Sage supports this reference. I confess, I was expecting something much nastier, a load of cool water vibes or something similar. I don't detect bergamot or citrus.
As it progresses, the (unidolous! ha! even super-brave) jasmine softens it considerably, lily of the valley is completely absent from my nose. I really like the very woody and thankfully XY-oxane-free base. Guaiac/cedar + amber is the kind of combination that immediately catches my attention.

The overall effect is fresh, super pleasant, nothing tugs. It's not particularly retro either, no 80s fragrance homage. American Psycho is not a sillage monster and is good for the office or leisure time, for evenings etc. I find it almost too average and light. You can do it! The name and marketing can then be discussed further ;)

Not how I imagined Patrick Bateman would smell, not even remotely close. This is summer fragrance. Its good but not American Psycho-esque.
