A Journey of Rediscovery
Journey Man is often referred to as "a tobacco fragrance by Amouage", but in my opinion this description is reductive and misses the point of this nuanced creation. It's a scent that embodies its name, with a slow-burning evolution that moves from a fiery start to a warm, contemplative finish.

Journey was my third purchase from the Omani house two years ago, a bottle I initially let go of, only to recently reacquire it. My renewed appreciation stems from the brilliant use of the cypriol note, which, despite the perfume's reputation, is quite structural in the composition's drydown.

The fragrance begins with a blast of bitter orange, Sichuan pepper, and cardamom. The combination feels like a dance between the spicy pepper and the cooling cardamom. A touch of opulent neroli adds further bitter-floral freshness. This initial phase is energetic, in contrast to its eventual dry down.

As the journey progresses, after around 1 hour, the scent becomes woodier and smokier, with a delicate, wispy frankincense and the earthiness of cypriol.
The supposed headliners - tobacco and leather - are diffused. The tobacco is dry, leafy and a bit smoky, weaving in and out of the incense trail, while the leather is soft, and fleeting.
As the drydown progresses, you may be able to perceive a slight sweetness perhaps coming from Geraniol and tonka.

In terms of performance, Journey isn't a loud scent. It is a quiet burn with a reserved scent bubble, good for formal settings. Longevity wise, 8 hours on skin and a bit longer if you spray on clothes.

Overall, Journey is a well blended 12-year-old composition from master perfumers Morillas and Negrin that hasn't aged at all. It might be only for those who appreciate hidden gems... but it should be on your frag-radar, especially if you like cypriol!

Ahhhh, the beauty of Amouage shines again…
I was anxiously awaiting the delivery of this one…. and it did NOT let me down. The quality of the incense notes that Amouage uses is second to NONE.

The RICHNESS that exudes from this is fantastic. I get a smoky, leathery feeling from this. High class, and sophisticated. Not for the novices. You know what you want and you know how to get it. That’s what this fragrance says LOUDLY.

It exclaims “I AM HERE, AND YOU KNOW MY NAME! I WILL DO AS I PLEASE, AND YOU CAN CHOOSE TO ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH ME, OR GET THE F- OUT OF MY WAY!”

Is it brash or obnoxious though? Not at all. It is the purest form of confidence. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and this is definitely the former.

Performance? Perfection. High quality ingredients that project to a 5ft+ scent bubble with a sillage that radiates and tells everyone that it was YOU who was there, and exactly where you have gone. Longevity is an easy 12+ hours, LOUDLY.

Amouage is my favorite house for many reasons. This is one of them.

A Crowd-Pleasing Amouage
It seems as if Amouage is making changes in its perfume making strategy. Once its scents were very bold powerhouse masculines. Now, it seems that with the midnight flower collection and last year's Journey duo, Amoauge is trying to make polished scents that can be used as signature scents for the well dressed average (with a sense of style) consumer.
Now on to Journey....
Journey opens with a fresh yet spicy and smoky aroma. I say fresh because the the bergamot and neroli give it a fresh and a minute soapy edge and spicy because the sichuan pepper is the star of this fragrance. As time passes one is treated to a nice (yet repetitive and familiar) tobacco note that is paired with cardamon and incense. The base is relatively generic as it is composed of musk ,leather, and tonka beans.
From my review it may seem that I thought of Journey as an average fragrance, but that is not the case. It is a classical smelling fragrance (as if from the late 80's) done very very well. The projection is above average and so is longevity but is sub-par based upon Amouage's standards (which as I said is because Amouage is trying to make this mainstream and versatile and isn't necessarily a bad thing).
A good Amouage for even those who previously disliked this Omani brand's offerings.

BTW: It has a gorgeous bottle and the picture I took isn't doing justice to this beauty

A quintessential Amouage
Journey Man is the type of scent I think of when I think "Amouage:" spicy, a bit sweet, resinous, mysterious, and dark. I think this DNA or kind of "theme" of the house started with Jubilation XXV Man though I am not 100% sure as I vaguely remember smelling that in store years ago (a sample is on the way, I will do a thorough review of Jubilation as well). Edit 8/19: After trying Jubilation XXV Man, I can definitely see the similarities between it and Journey Man. Built on the same DNA, with Journey opening more peppery and a bit sweeter in the drydown, with added tobacco

Journey Man begins with a peppery opening that on strip I remember feeling rough but on skin is actually quite smooth. Like many other Amouages, frankincense is the star of the show, and is joined here by tobacco and leather, and with sweetness from the tonka bean, which also gives it a subtle fougere/barbershop feel. The frankincense/tobacco/leather combination is quite smoky but is tempered by sweetness, masculine florals (slightly peppery geranium), and the omnipresent ambroxan.

I think this would be the fragrance I'd recommend to someone who asks, "what Amouage should I try first?" (assuming it is a man asking) It contains the building blocks of a lot of other, possibly greater Amouages, but is easygoing, mass-appealing, and not very challenging, while still embodying the signature of the brand. As for myself, I think Journey Man would serve the same purpose as Overture Man in a collection and I much prefer the boozy animalic side of Overture to the relative tameness here. But really not a bad option if you like the idea of Amouage but the ones you have tried, like Interlude Man or Overture have seemed "too much" for you.

Purely masculine.
“At first smell” Journey Man seems like a typical Amouage scent – having this woody-spicy and incense character. It is not the first time when the brand uses pepper, incense, musk, ambergris and lots more of other used in this recipe ingredients. It has to be admitted though that the Sichuan pepper essence smells stunningly beautiful, aromatic and vibrating here. Still the start-off would not be like it actually is if it was not for a quite big dose of cardamom, which in this amount appears for the second time in the Omani perfumes (previously, fans of this intense fragrance could be satisfied like that in 2010 when Opus IV was launched). This quite intense and ruthless pepper-cardamom start-off has been coated with a mix of bergamon and neroli. The heart incorporates vibrating molecules of juniper berries, which link the spicy pepper with dry-woody cypriol, smoky incense and strongly present note of tobacco. According to the list of notes we can find also here pure geraniol, subtle rose-smelling molecule that in nature appears, among others, in ripe tobacco (worth noting, cigarette manufactures use geraniol to scent their products). It is clear then that perfumers decided to strengthen and in a way to ripe the tobacco note by adding geraniol. These procedures that consist of mixing the natural aromatic essence with one or more aromatic molecules, which in fact are present in nature but in limited amounts, to strengthen chosen aspects of natural fragrance are quite common in modern perfumery. For the surprisingly strong note of tobacco we have to wait though. In my case it appeared after 3-4h after settling and when there is no more pepper and cardamom going on in the air and the smell itself starts to get more dry, rough and woody-incense. At this stage cypriol can be vividly smelled. This, as it turned out, became my favourite aromatic molecule responsible for this dry, powdery woody tones present in such smells like Opus VI by Pierre Negrin and Dora Arnaud and also Opus VII by Negrin and Alberto Morillas (the same duet that introduced Journey Man), Timbuktu by L’Artisan or deeply regretted Gucci Pour Homme. Nonetheless, Journey Man is partly penetrating similar olfactory regions as Michael Almairac’s perfume so I recommend this scent to all those keen on Gucci.

The base is quite characteristic, mixing sweet and bitter note of strengthen with geraniol tobacco with a characteristic dry and woody note of cypriol. Everything intensified by tonka, musk and ambrox. During the last stage Journey Man resembles some other perfume which I reviewed earlier but unfortunately I cannot recall the name now. Anyway, the smell gets masculine, elegant and intriguing. It is really good. With every next try I come to a conclusion that the tobacco note is the dark horse of the whole composition. The note has been put into the whole smell perfectly, so when it comes to the fore, it smells incredibly – realistically but not in the negative way of course, at the same time it is intriguing and sensual. Above all it is purely masculine.

The so called working parameters of the scent can be classified as very good. Sillage is very good. The smell as a whole is strong and vivid and during the first few hours projects around the bearer within a couple of meters and can be easily noticeable by interested environment. It has been 7 hours after I sprayed it onto me and I can still smell it quite vividly; the smell itself can last more than 12 hours.

I have no doubt that Journey Man is yet another great fragrance introduced by Amouage that is slowly becoming one of my favourites of this brand, right next to Opus VII and Interlude Man. Having it on me is a pure pleasure. It makes me feel really special. In fact that is the quintessence of this hobby…

main notes: Sichuan pepper, cardamon, bergamot, neroli, juniper berries, incense, geraniol, tobacco leaf, tonka, cypriol, leather, musc, ambrox

I wanted to like this, but I can’t stand Ambroxan; it ruins ever fragrance that it touches. I wish houses would stop using it.

Quite complex; very spicy opening filled with aromatics and some animalic notes, evolves into smooth, leathery florals, a little too sweet.

Despite the poor projection on the newest formulations, another Amouage masterpiece. The 1st of C. Chong’s 2nd chapter, a new journey.

Sweet, spiced leather. Classy, stylish, balanced. Surprisingly linear to my nose, probably because of Ambroxan. Stays for 5-6 hours.

Behind it's harsh, Kalan-esque opening lies a gorgeously complex and regal spiced leather scent profile. Journey Man is an adventure to wear

Spicy incensy tobacco leaf. Easy to wear easy to like. I recomend to try to get a vintage of this one tested since it has become different.

Opening citrus, then pepper, spice and incense in the background, this is an amazing balanced scent that can be used for many occasions.
