The curtain rises on booze, smoke and spices...
Overture Man by Amouage is a resinous composition that unfolds in layers, beginning with a spicy, boozy flourish. The opening is very rich/warm with cognac, cardamom, cumin, and saffron. As the scent evolves, myrrh and labdanum take center stage, lending a dense, syrupy-resinous quality that dominates the heart.
I like cumin, but I realise that some might find Overture challenging for the usual BO association - I can only suggest sampling.

The leather note, while not a leading player at all, is present in the base and contributes to the overall depth. It is smoky and animalic, but still wearable. Rather than evoking rawhide, it leans toward a dark, polished leather... more suggestive of a well-aged armchair.
These animalic undertones, bolstered by the listed “animal notes” and frankincense, get close to barnyard territory at times, but are tempered by the sweetness of benzoin, creamy sandalwood and a bit of cinnamon which I can't always smell.

Projection is substantial for 3-4 hours, then Overture will remain noticeable well beyond 12 hours on skin. It’s one of Amouage best (or beast?) performers, ideal for colder months and open-air settings. Personally, I would wear it for a formal event, ignoring the climate conditions :)

Perhaps due to its challenging nature, I often see it at discounters at a heavily reduced price!

A Night at the Opera
The lights dim, the conductor steps onto his podium, and music fills the air. It is the overture, a piece of music that precedes an opera. Usually beginning with some forceful chords to let stragglers know the performance is beginning, the overture explores a lot of the thematic content before the curtain rises and the opera proper begins. This perfume, according to Amouage's website, evokes "an essence of self-assured elegance and glamour that treats even the simplest of occasions with the fanfare of an evening at the opera." Being a huge opera fan, I had to try it!

It opens with a menagerie of Middle-Eastern spices: cumin, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon. In the same first sniff you can detect a wonderful sweet boozy accord that is stated as cognac in the note list. This opening is so addicting and mesmerizing. It only gets better from there. Soft florals lead into a beautiful sandalwood and leather blend that keep the scent masculine while still maintaining the smooth and dark signature. What a fantastic boozy, spicy, woody creation!

Ohhhh this is good
Overture Man is another awesome masculine fragrance from Amouage, however I can understand why it might be difficult for some. Immediately after spraying, I got a strong citrus/spicy scent. It was quickly followed by a definite BO/armpit scent, which I attribute to the cumin and grapefruit. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was definitely there and was detectable in the scent bubble. After about 10 to 15 minutes, the BO scent didn't project but it was still mildly noticeable if I put my nose close to my skin. As the middle and base notes started to bloom, the BO scent retreated, but it took a good hour for it to disappear completely from my skin.

Another interesting thing for me is that the cognac top note did not appear immediately but took about a good half hour to show itself. As the spices and leather started to mix in, Overture Man became an awesome smooth, boozy, smoky, masculine fragrance with a only a hint of sweetness.

Underneath the smooth booziness, is the subtle animal note that does not detract but only adds to the overall attractiveness of the fragrance. You'd think otherwise, but that's the genius of the perfumer at work. The animal note is not the same as the BO scent I noticed at the start. I'd describe it as the times I've picked up hitchhiking backpackers on a cool autumn rainy day when they've been on the trail for a week. But you mix that somehow with the spices, leather, wood and smoke and it becomes a wonderful, heavy fragrance. Don't know how else to describe it.

Beast mode performance. It's definite full bottle worthy for me. Best to sample, however. Glad I have a full bottle in my collection.

ALL good things must come to an end...
For a long time I ignored buying any Amouage because of the ubiquitous hype that they get on social media. And that goes for all the hyped luxury houses. But when this was announced and I read the note pyramid, I was VERY intrigued.

Since I started collecting I found I have an appreciation for big, bold, scents. The first time I smelled Baraonda by Nasomatto, I bought it. The first time I ever smelled T.Rex by Zoologist, I bought it. The first time I ever smelled The Night by Frederick Malle, well, I didn't buy it. Lol. BUT would have, if the price wasn't so exclusionarily high... I know, I know, I made my own adverb. But you get the point.

So imagine, the ONLY Amouage I ever yearned for was not available to purchase in the US.

Eventually, I did research on other Amouage fragrances and found 2 that spoke to me: Gold Man and Enclave. Both of which I really like.

Overture, I gave up on.

Just when I started to wind down from making purchases (...have WAY too many...) guess what I seen at a steal of a price? Overture Man!!!

Instantly I bought it!

The only other fragrances I ever got so mind blown to find was: Dior Home Parfum and from Ermenegildo Zegna's Elements of Man series: Strength. Both were/are unicorns and both I really enjoy.

Typically, I would not have purchased a fragrance like this with colder weather so far off. But I thought of the odds of finding it for such a steal again and just went for it.

So far, I've only had a spray on my right hand, so it wouldn't be fair if I started yapping on about it. However, my initial impression is akin to when I first smelled LDDM by Andy Tauer and Fumerie turque by both Christopher Sheldrake and Serge Lutens. Both BLEW MY MIND!

All and all I am supremely happy finally being able to own this. The only other fragrance that I REALLY want and MAY purchase full retail, is: Cartier's Oud & Oud. After that, I'm done. This hobby will have you buying more than you can ever use and personally I think my money could be better spent.

But, hey, that's me.

Until next time y'all..

UPDATE
I rarely make separate entries on the same perfume, but this is so unusually beautiful that I just have to.

Altho I still have yet to give this a full, proper, wearing due to it still being Summer (but am tempted! Lol!), I find myself constantly either sniffing the atomizer or half spritzing it on the back of my hand. I say that to say: there has been no other fragrance that I've smelled that evoke the deep emotion this one does.

This fragrance makes me wish that I can hibernate until colder weather is present. Totally forgo Summer, with all its beauty, just to be able to apply this until my heart is content.

This is the fragrance that I unknowingly searched for as I went thru over 1,000 fragrances; The one that kept me buying due to, subconsciously, not being completely satisfied with what I already had.

This fragrance makes me unequivocally feel I, now, have the absolute best in ALL scent profiles, safe of a truly authentic, stanky, oud.

Shy of The Night (which is an indulgence that falls TOTALLY outside my budget), Cartier's Oud & Oud I believe will fill that void. It's authentic and stanky, and extremely elegant and luxurious smelling, yet wearable. Something TN isn't, imo.

I'm sorry for emoting so hard about this fragrance and going off on a tangent, but, in the end, that's what fragrance forums are for. When you need to express your passion for fragrance and no one else gets it, you guys do.

Until next time!

Boozy and sweaty elegance
Overture Man is the sexiest perfume I own. While the scent itself is a bit challenging, it's also nuanced and everchanging. Karine Vinchon-Spehner created a coherent masterpiece, where each facet is presented at the right time.

Saffron, cardamom and nutmeg - the opening reminds me of walking through a spice bazaar. However, it doesn't take long for cumin to take over. Combined with grapefruit and animalic undertones, you get an inexplicably pleasant sweaty smell.

As the spicy maelstrom settles, an intoxicating cognac note enters the stage. It mixes with the sweatiness, staying present throughout the wearing experience. This half-boozy, half-sweaty symphony is the bread and butter of Overture Man.

Frankincense is distinctive enough to provide the Amouage appeal, but it doesn't overpower. Overture Man isn't all about spices, cognac and smoke; there's plenty of sweetness from the mix of smooth, vanillic benzoin, honey-like myrrh and cinnamon.

Eventually, sandalwood comes into play, complemented by labdanum. I get some earthiness, presumably from patchouli. This results in a woody, slightly musty, leathery and creamy base, where balsams manage to tame sweat and booze.

Performance is remarkable. I get 12 hours of longevity, but the creamy animalic notes stick to my skin for much longer. The projection is also great; I usually get 4 hours of a glorious boozy and resinous cloud that turns heads.

Supremely boozy spices - cumin and ginger dominate.
Resinous, bittersweet heart; sprinkled cinnamon. Woody, musky, smoked leather base.

It starts like I am opening the drawer where I keep all the spices in the kitchen. Then myrrh and Cognac start to stand out. Great quality.

Perfect balance between woods and spices. Sweet, thick, yet never cloying. I get some rhubarb from it? One of the best Amouages imo.

Spicy opening followed by a sexy mix of cognac, sweat and resins. Smoky, leathery, woody drydown which oozes class. Special occasion worthy.

Really good shit. Animalic notes soften a lot in the dry down. Deep, spicy, dark and sensual. This is what Amouage is best at.

All quintessential Middle Eastern/"Oriental" assets in one package! Cumin makes it intriguing, preventing from becoming "pleasant". A 10.
