Rose and Resin
Elemi is a dark wonder that can beautify anything, IMO. Frankincense ennobles all it touches. Add Bay leaf and Black pepper and we have a spicily alluring top note beckoning us to surprising eastern roses. But let's skip them for a moment and note the presence of Labdanum in both heart and base. Luxury! Next read the rest of the base and imagine those deeply mesmerizing smells with all else. Now think rose, but not Bulgarian. A Persian rose, a slightly green Turkish rose. Then realize it's ALL natural. Anyone have a Persian carpet for me to wrap myself in and then be rolled out at the foot of Caesar? Good gracious this is a sophisticated, sexy, high quality rose. If it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'm buying it.

A smoldering rose...
Low, thrumming along from beginning to end. A rounded sensuous bottom-of-the-garden rose shimmering in moonlight...need I say how much I love it.

A bit of background - I am a lady of a certain age with dry skin living in a mildly southern climate on the East Coast of the US. I love all things oriental - and I love roses. (Anyone remember La Rose Jacqueminot? It DID bring an entire department store to it's knees...) And I love ANYthing Jazz Lady puts her talents to.

Anyway, this saintly rose is going into permanent rotation in my collection - vive Annette Neuffer!

Sweet Incense Resin "Rose"
Per Fumum: A Sanctified Rose is a sweet, dense, dry, and powdery resinous incense rose.

Interestingly, before checking the notes, I was convinced I smelled a sharp, acidic citrus sweetness. This brightness, however, stems from the interplay of Frankincense and Elemi, creating a shimmering, piquant incense opening that mimics citrus. The rose is most prominent at the start—a bright, floral herald—before retreating into the background. Here, Labdanum acts as a silent glue, binding the elements into a warm, "ambery" core that adds significant depth.

As the spices settle, the base reveals a scorched, dry woodiness with a hint of powdery sweetness. I suspect the charred, balsamic grit of Peru Balsam paired with Atlas Cedar creates this distinct, rugged texture.

In the end, describing an all-natural perfume through notes alone feels too clinical.
Maybe It is better to speak of its impression:
The scent begins with a rush of pale, dry Frankincense, as fine and tactile as face powder. As Bay Leaf and Elemi ignite, the thurible swings, and the Mass begins. Pale smoke flows like a waterfall; resins turn into molten gold and bubbling amber. This sacred aroma spirals upward, tracing the ghostly silhouette of a rose in the air. As the smoke dissipates, it unveils the ancient, solemn foundation: an old wooden altar marked by scorch marks, drenched in centuries of melted resin and lingering incense.

Enclosed in Amber
Creamy yellow Elemi is contrasted with laurel and pepper. The latter soon takes the lead and darkens the fragrance significantly within seconds. I fancy I can already perceive the first hints of rose. Shortly after, a spicy sweetness sneaks into the scent, which I would have suspected to be tobacco. Alongside it, there’s a graceful tea-like quality for which I have no concrete explanation. Interestingly, a ...uh... somewhat verbally insensitive colleague mentioned "Christmas tea...". Additionally, I catch a whiff of the chanterelle foam soup note, which I had previously suspected to be Ambrette. However, that fades quickly.

After a quarter of an hour, a honey-like warm amber note spreads, sugary and crystalline, complemented by a soft candied orange fruitiness. An elegant, delicate freshness of noble rose leaves the realm of the vague. I find it very tasteful that the laurel leaf has since become equally quiet. It would not have been beneficial if the two had been turned up louder side by side. Instead, I ponder over a definable cinnamon-coumarin sweetness on the spice front.

However, what prevails now - and we are still talking about the first hour - is a candied amber, pleasantly tart. As if the rose were enclosed in amber. Its scent has become a notion, a memory. Sanctified. Petrified? Thus, during the opening hour, the fragrance has essentially turned into an amber scent. I even think I can smell the adjective "fossil." I imagine a "stony" undertone. Crazy.

Gradually, the balsamic quality breaks through and the sweetness intensifies. The rose tries bravely, but it hardly manages to set its own accents alongside the increasingly creamy overall impression. Spontaneously, I would have speculated on a contribution from Guajak, although it does not become annoyingly H-sahnig, as I perceive some Evodys (*shudder*). Of course, according to the manufacturer, no Guajak is included. It is likely sandalwood and labdanum instead.

To clarify: The fragrance never slips into that gluey, sticky consistency that ruins many scents for me, even those I initially find beautiful. Lighter components like amber dust and cedar are always involved, and the two factions fluctuate back and forth. Only the rose hasn’t really made it this far. Only a hint of berry-like scent remains close to the skin. Perhaps it was ultimately too fine-aromatic to assert itself.

After about seven hours, 'A Sanctified Rose' can be described as airy-woody-light smoky-vanilla. At times, I catch a whiff of a woodruff-vanilla breeze, which is likely derived from tonka. In my opinion, this could have been more subtle.

Nevertheless, nothing is annoying; the entire fragrance is multifaceted and varied. The line - from amber-like to balsamic - is indeed marked, yet different nuances emerged on the individual testing days. It was certainly not boring. Overall, this seems to be a general characteristic of Neuffer fragrances.

Conclusion: A cozy scent with a seasonally appropriate design. For me, it is too creamy-sweet in the long run. In contrast, it is certainly a feast for all who enjoy soft-balsamic scents without having to pay for it in the end with some loveless goo.

And if you are the rose, I am a rose shadow
I hesitated for a long time before writing a review of this fragrance, even though I am usually not at a loss for words. The components and their combination have already been detailed, and I can only add my perception here: A Sanctified Rose is primarily an incense fragrance for me. Olibanum aspects dominate, but are clearly flanked by the increasingly prominent balsamic notes of benzoin, wax, opoponax, etc., intertwined with wood and vanilla - typical of Annette Neuffer's style, where one element seamlessly flows into another like the ornaments of the Alhambra. As Luca Turin writes regarding Avicenna, texture and structure are one, finely chiselled. Labdanum plays an important role, but integrates seamlessly into the overall picture, rather than standing out with a dark dustiness as is often the case in perfumes (aesthetically intended, for example, in Vendetta pour homme, rather clumsily in some House of Matriarch fragrances).

So we are dealing here with a truly impressive olfactory ornamentation, reminiscent of the most noble Persian art and architecture, and one would have to get very close to recognize individual components - which one does not want to do, because the overall picture, which is ultimately what matters, is so beautiful to behold. For: where can the sanctified rose be found? It is undoubtedly present, even at the center of the action, but more as a silhouette that emerges from all the intertwined lines and patterns than as a distinct presence. "And if you are the rose, I am a rose shadow" (Sufi master Rumi). Not an image, but a (more complete?) description, that is the secret of Islamic art. In the contemplation of this deep fragrant beauty, woven from nature and the greatest artistry, like a temple in Samarkand or Isfahan (a place of roses), words are not needed, just as images are not needed there; they become superfluous.

Waxy-resinous, rather stale spices, no flower can compete with that. The scent remains dull, health food store-esoteric, and unbalanced.
