Animalic in the Woods
Aramis Gold
Stifling humidity chases up the mountain to the forest. The sun rises tumultuously into the day. Golden, it casts its rays through the foliage into the underbrush.
The soft forest floor exudes the scent of heather, wild thyme, creeping thyme, lemon balm, and small herbs. Ivy winds its way up the trees, entwining the stump of a fallen fir that offers a colony of ants the beginning of its heroic endeavor, for the construction of its Babylonian tower.
It smells of gathered needles, small twigs, bergamot, of fading leaves, flowers, and moss. Ant animalic, like licorice or bear dung, wafts skyward and into my large green handkerchief, which I have laid on the castle - to capture this scent of communal strength.
The drama quickly passes. A subtle scent of cloves and honey, of soft patchouli and sandalwood spreads out. A hint of oak and leather accompanies us closely for the next two to three hours on the way home.
Sniffing the handkerchief is recommended for colds.
