Musc Imperial

A fragrance podcast I listen to described Musc Imperiale as a "buff blueberry," the scent of the colorful Montague boys from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet. That description won me over entirely.

Unfortunately, it didn't deliver. I didn't get the unorthodox fruitiness that I had expected. Instead, it smells like a standard men's cologne. It's the smell of a graduating business major from a highly-acclaimed university. The son of a WASP who, though handsome, might call me a slur on the wrong night after a drink too many.

A bowl of fruit in the lobby of a Spanish hotel

I own different Atelier Cologne scents and though this is one of the most popular ones, it as one of my least favorites. I had high hopes when I ordered it, based on the comments, but for some reason, it never clicked between Musc Impérial and me. Other than the more citrusy scents of AC, there is something less natural about this one, while this lack is not compensated by character or a distinct personality either. Maybe I am just getting too old for fruity scents like this. On the other hand, it serves perfectly as a room scent and I read that it was actually created as a room scent for a hotel in Barcelona. Mixing it with fractionated coconut oil, it is perfect in a reed diffuser and a very uplifting, charming, happy signature scent for our house in summer. For me personally, I will stick to other marvels of Atelier Cologne such as Mistral Patchouli or Emeraude Agar. Each their own of course.

Like the forests of northwestern British Columbia

A few years ago I was lucky enough to spend a summer holiday hiking in the forests of northwestern British Columbia. This fragrance reminds me so much of that time, because of its fresh, clean wood and its light berry notes here and there. I can recall the sunlight streaming through the trees, the afternoon heat, and the buzzing of insects. I really wish this had better projection, because it goes almost immediately to skin scent on me. That said, I catch whiffs of it for hours after putting it on. To me, it leans quite masculine but in a way I like; it's crisp and bright. There is very little if any musk that I can detect.

Like almost everything in this house, this is not a criticism it does very well what it knows, citrus theme.

It opens with a good citrus mixture is immediately mixed with gooseberries and figs, not fig leaves, this fig predominates throughout the life of the perfume, being the base of this perfume, influences much the temperature and humidity, and can change the perception of one day to another.

In the background musk and wood are perceived, this very well made and rounded, it has to be applied in quantity, quite good longevity, although after a few hours it is perceived flush with skin, the wake is scarce.

Modern Allrounder

Unisex? No, I can't imagine this scent on a woman, not even at my best guess. Unless she is also wearing her lover's shirt and boxers.

On my boyfriend, I find the scent irresistible. However, I have a weakness for "modern" fragrances in men like Aventus, Bleu de Chanel, Allure Homme Sport, and everything in that direction. For me, Musc Impérial also belongs to this category. Quality is absolutely correct for me, as expected from AC, with rather unobtrusive sillage and good longevity. The fragrance transforms from a sensational top note for me to a noble scent reminiscent of freshly showered skin, which simply always fits. With this fragrance, you can never go wrong, but I think for ambitious and discerning perfume lovers, it might lack something special. In terms of clothing, this corresponds to a pair of jeans with a white t-shirt for me. Overall, a great price-performance ratio for lovers of this fragrance direction.
