Clean citrus musk straight out of the shower
Banana Republic’s Classic is a simple, fresh, citrusy musk. I’m really, really not big on fresh musk fragrances (yet another gift from my father, oops), but this is the least offensive one in my collection. It’s softer and more elegant— probably the florals at play— making it feminine-leaning unisex. Slight sweet like crisp clementine, but if you love sweet fragrances don’t expect much. The ginger thankfully isn’t too spicy. It reminds me of those travel sized complimentary liquid body washes from a hotel that you would take home while on vacation to use again later. If you’re trying to smell like you just stepped out of the shower, this is a bright and refreshing choice. I think it works very well as a professional daytime summer and perhaps late spring fragrance, though other occasions are appropriate as well. I don’t dislike it, and it has somewhat grown on me, which is saying something if you know of my tastes.

Classic "Abstract" Cologne
Banana Republic CLASSIC is indeed a "classic", rather masculine-smelling cologne. The composition reminds me quite a bit of the Calvin Klein omnisex jug perfumes: somewhat aquatic, somewhat citrusy, vague and indistinct as far as specific notes are concerned. Among the synthetic floral renditions, this one may contain water lily or lotus or something else light and inobtrusive, compatible with these sorts of modern scents, which also sometimes contain tea notes—and this one may as well.

CLASSIC is really quite evasive, when all is said and sniffed, a sort of “one-size-fits-all” fragrance. As this fragrance dries down, a vetiver-like note becomes more and more evident, making this seem, again, a classic made-for-men perfume. Overall, this sort of modern (largely synthetic) perfume, comprising primarily “abstract” notes, does not appeal to me very much, but for those looking for this sort of thing, I'm sure that CLASSIC would do quite well. Nothing to get excited about, but also nothing to offend.

Wonderful Limes with Green Grass and White Soap
Classic is a true unisex fragrance and is often marketed as such.
It starts off citrusy and green, the herbal notes are more meadow-like than kitchen herbs, the citrus fruits are primarily represented by their peels, zesty and fresh, but not really fruity.

Classic reminds me a lot of "W" from the same manufacturer, except that W starts off a whole lot greener, has much less citrus content, and overall feels airier and cooler. Fraternal twins.

After a few minutes, I can distinctly smell limes in Classic, and they are the best limes I have ever perceived in fragrances. These are real, fresh, whole limes that have just been quartered and crushed with a pestle, just like they are wonderfully refreshing in a Caipirinha. The meadow-green herbs are still present alongside them.

A few minutes later, the honeysuckle makes its presence known, the scent remains green, the spicy-perfumed lime aroma persists, but flowers join in, making it feel softer and rounder. The lilac scent takes a bit longer to reveal itself. Just like with the honeysuckle, it consists of individual blossoms, a soft, sweet, floral whiff that blends into the green and citrus notes, not an overwhelming wave of floral scent: Absolutely undeniably wearable for both men and women, and compared to "W," even a touch gentler, more feminine. (I am currently wearing them side by side for comparison, and W has an interesting sharpness that I found hard to place - I know that aroma, what is it again, something edible...? It's daylily flowers, which have a slight, cress-like sharpness beneath the floral notes when eaten.)

Classic is now becoming more lime-like and at the same time a bit creamy-floral. This then shifts once more towards soapy, and that becomes the defining scent characteristic that lingers - like freshly washed skin with a subtly scented, classic soap. Very clean, clear, and sober, without frills, but also without harshness. A wonderful scent, for example, for doctors.

The longevity is not impressive; after about three hours, only a faint whiff of the scent can be detected with close sniffing. For an Eau de Cologne, that would be perfectly fine, but for an Eau de Toilette, I find it a bit disappointing.
"Classic" is therefore very suitable as a refreshment on a hot day; I really can't imagine this scent being unpleasant to anyone's nose, not even when applied generously (which might also improve the longevity).

Not bad as an uncontroversial, unobtrusive classic " clean " office scent. Not really good either.
