W = M
It's a good thing that an upside-down W is an M, because Banana Republic W is a fullfledged unisex scent. This is a refreshing floral citrus with a demeanor somewhere between Bond no 9 EAU DE NEW YORK and NEW YORK FLING. It's quite nice, I must say, although W is on the light side.

I'm actually a bit baffled as to why this perfume is being marketed to women, as it is every bit as appropriate for men. In fact, it lies exactly at the midpoint between feminine and masculine fragrances, with a complete ambiguity that makes it perfect for both. Not too flowery, and not too cologne-y, W offers a perfect balance of notes and wears very well in hot weather.

White floral with a touch of green
Banana Republic W (BRW) is a very pleasant, light, slightly powdery, white floral with a green cast. I don't get bug spray on top, as others have reported. However, I do get about 5 minutes of urine, yes urine. It passes, and after that BRW is a fresh & citrusy office-appropriate everyday fragrance.

I like my florals bold or light, and BWR fits the latter group. Unfortunately, there's a white floral that's just a tad irritating to me when I wear it on my skin. Maybe Honeysuckle or Lily of Valley, or the combination of both? I don't get the same irritation when BRW is applied to a card. Amazing longevity on a card, btw - nearly a week later, still there - clear, bright, & clean.

BRW is something that seems like it might be most appropriate for warmer weather, like late Spring or early Summer. However, BRW could be a go-to floral fragrance in the winter. It has enough green pep to brighten gray skies but enough depth to withstand cooler temps.

It's odd but BRW somehow reminds me of Alliage/Aliage, only a lighter, more floral version. I think Alliage is best in Summer and BRW is best in Winter, but you have to have the right chemistry to pull both off.

A Fresh Citrus Floral but...Not Gonna Do It!
I thought I loved it at first, but after about an hour my nose started running and I got a migraine headache. I smelled a fresh citrus floral for the first 10 minutes and was very pleased to find it so reasonable priced. Then when the allergies kicked in, not just me, my husband started sneezing and the cat started wheezing - ugh...I knew it wasn't meant to be. If I had to describe this, I would say that it was like a less slutty version of "Jivago 24K Gold", no offense meant to Jivago 24 K Gold Lovers...I like it, too and this has that same middle with a fresh bergamot and green mandarin note over the top. Starts out so lovely, but after the first hour...the sillage was kicking my you-know-what! So if you like Jivago 24K Gold, but wish it had more sillage and feel that you can do without some of that powdery base, this is half the price...not a bad deal. As for me- it had to go back...'Not-gonna-to-do-it!' As A Bush, Senior, former US Pres. used to say!

I need a nose subwoofer!
I am a desperate nose. Now I’ve poured the entire vial from Blauemaus over my arm. First half, an hour later another half. The result: I suspect how beautiful it is, what seeps into my skin. But it completely seeps in and I could go crazy: I can’t grasp “W”, it slips away from me, only briefly perceptible.

I need a subwoofer for my nose, and fast! The high notes of the fragrance (the top note) I can still hear clearly and distinctly-crystal clear even. A dream of fresh branches, juicy, bitter, authentic, fresh as the morning. What underlies this song of branches in the depth I can no longer really grasp, only vaguely. Something slightly watery, floral, white, transparent, a splashing sound. White lilies? Possible. Very beautiful in any case, but already far too quiet.

Everything beneath that is just a barely perceptible hum. And immediately the enchanting sound fades away and disappears into nothing.

Cruel. So cruel.

EDIT: Blauemaus recently gave me a chance for a retry and I followed Lilaus's tip with the high dosage. Seven to eight sprays on skin and clothing and “W” really comes alive. So much so that it can almost become too loud. So it works!

In the Early Dew to the Mountains
I first tested this fragrance in autumn and was not impressed. Fresh, green, delicately floral and nice - yes. But not at all long-lasting, no momentum, no warmth, no sweetness. Above all, it simply vanished after a few minutes.

In the meantime, I know that autumn and winter are the wrong seasons for “W.” “W” belongs in spring and summer. Because since spring has truly arrived a few days ago and I tested “W” again - it was already in the souk - I want to smell it on myself again and again.

Right after spraying, a very energetic freshness spreads, reminding me a bit of cleaning products and an energetic, somewhat hyperactive gym teacher. These are the citrus notes, which I couldn't identify as bergamot or mandarin, only as generally hesperidic. This extreme energy, however, does not last; it fades away along with the hesperidic notes. Behind it, a light floral hint emerges, cool and damp and fresh in the manner of a spring morning in the garden.
Eager and active, yes, but no longer a hyperactive gym teacher.

Lily of the valley and honeysuckle are clearly identifiable; they exude this slightly tart, rather green and cool, and a tiny bit soapy kind of floral quality. The water lily adds an aquatic touch that does not impose itself; the impression of cool freshness remains more airy than wet.
The scent of freshly mown grass is also still distinctly present, with no trace of fruitiness.

If I had to depict “W,” I might choose a delicate, translucent chiffon scarf with an abstract floral pattern in green and white, fluttering in a light breeze, illuminated by the morning sun against a bright blue sky and a blooming orchard. Perhaps forgotten overnight on the clothesline.

The fragrance conveys an idea of purity and coolness and freshness, without me directly thinking of freshly washed or freshly showered. In my perception, it is both more abstract and more natural than that. A truly beautiful, quiet spring morning.

I do not detect amber or mahogany, and the musk remains elegantly restrained. They are indeed used so controlled that the fragrance gains stability and longevity without stepping into the foreground. At most, a bit of wood can be smelled, but I think of fresh, still slightly damp wood, not dry sawdust or sunlit boards.

I do not find that it changes significantly after the first few minutes. And while the longevity is not particularly impressive, 5-6 hours is quite acceptable.

“W” is a very beautiful, understated, light, and pleasant fragrance for the warm season, which also works very well as a companion at work. I think it would not seem out of place on men either. “W” is friendly but distant enough to appear professional, cool and green, young but not childish, and despite all its floral notes, it is not sweet.
It reminds me in character of "Eau de Givenchy," which is, however, significantly more intense and lively.

The bottle is of simple elegance, clear glass, a slightly curved, angular disc, filled with almost water-clear liquid, a simple inscription, and a plain, matte silver cap over a similarly styled spray head.

In January 2019, I still saw the fragrance stacked high at the Banana Republic Outlet in Toronto, Canada.
