A Skillful Blend of Green Mango, Soap, and Shoe Polish
Banana Republic MALACHITE is a very unexpected creation--in some ways. Let's think about the typical Banana Republic customer: khakis and oxford shirts or crewneck sweaters, with an optional suit jacket for meetings, and nice leather loafers, which make it easy to dash out for Starbucks breaks without skipping a beat, Blackberry in hand. Likes to travel abroad and expects to retire early in the Caribbean, provided that the needed funds have been accumulated to lead the life to which s/he has every intention of being accustomed by that time.

What kind of perfumes would such a person wear? I think that MALACHITE would work quite well and was probably commissioned to fit perfectly with the company's typical clientele. Green mango, soap, and shoe polish waft through this composition in waves of varying proportions and strengths depending upon the day, the weather, and the wearer's mental state. A very fickle fragrance with enough eccentricity to be unique, while still bearing the yuppie mantel. I think that this creation is a success. Does anything else smell like MALACHITE? No. Does it smell good? Well, sometimes, yes, it does!

I love the presentation, see HRH Emperor Oliver, below, who should be receiving a pitch from Banana Republic soon--if they have any sense at all! (Wouldn't he look great in khakis?)

Great bottle, bad content
I guess sometimes the wrapping and bottling helps the fragrance. Being as uninteresting and anonymous as Banana Republic’s Malachite calls for help from other means. Here the help is the bottle. Beautiful dark green glass with silver details makes me excited to meet what is inside. But…
Malachite is an everyday floral fruity, a bit to the fresh side, meaning that I get more mango than musk. Being linear means that I get less action than from a fragrance, that develops through time. Inoffensive but also a bit boring, in my opinion. Knowing both Rosewood and Tobacco & Tonka Bean from the same brand I must admit that this is a disappointment. I would go for the empty bottle…

If it's her, then it could be her
Shortly after my registration here, I discovered that there is a matching perfume for my nickname. Back then, there were two entries that gave hope of actually getting the perfume from somewhere. Malachite by Baldi is still untested on my watchlist. It just hasn't happened so far.

Malachite by Banana Republic, on the other hand, was supposed to be part of my first sample order here. Unfortunately, that particular sample was no longer available, but the rest of my order revealed entirely new perfume dimensions to me. And the fantastic generosity of the members here.

Soon after, however, a 5ml miniature of Malachite was able to join my collection. Larger quantities would have been easier to obtain, but that felt too risky for me. And then: the first encounter! First, I had to carefully remove the stopper without spilling everything (back then, I didn't know that miniatures almost never have a spray mechanism...) and test it. Well, what can I say, the disappointment was great. This shallow everyday scent that disturbs no one is supposed to carry my name? Well, yes, no. This is not even close to malachite.

But it did sound interesting. Mango, pepper, vanilla, peony, sandalwood. All things I like. And then they smell so... bland? Still, I wore Malachite from time to time, often when I wasn't quite sure what to wear. With this initially subtly fruity-peppery blend that quickly turns into a creamy-clean floral scent, you can't go too wrong, and it doesn't annoy anyone quickly.

The only downside: the longevity. After an hour, Malachite (with moderate application) is already quite close to the skin. But you can always reapply, it's not like you have a highly exclusive, unaffordable perfume here. Unfortunately, however, when I reapply too early or too often, a (presumably only perceptible to me) dull note develops that somehow ruins the whole scent for me. I suspect the "pear component," as this has happened to me with another perfume as well, and according to the fragrance notes, pear is the common denominator. But it could be something else entirely.

So far, so good, Malachite could still have become a lasting candidate in my cabinet, if not for the following: one day at work, our intern smelled of (you probably guessed it) Malachite. I was initially astonished by this coincidence, after all, I thought I was the only person outside of parfumo who had ever heard of this perfume. So I trailed the girl for a while to make sure it was really her who smelled like that and finally asked her what perfume it was. The answer was even more astonishing: something from Calvin Klein, Eternity something. Yes, she revealed to me which Eternity it was, but since my brain was busy screaming a loud NO!, I honestly can't remember which one it was. I suspect Eternity Moment, but even the regular Eternity has certain parallels to Malachite for me.

You must be thinking: So what, what's so bad about that? I asked myself the same question. Am I such a snob that it bothers me if someone could mistake my unknown, not available in drugstores perfume for a Calvin Klein Eternity flanker? Yes, I guess I am.
So, I'm sorry Malachite, it was nice with us, but it probably won't be anything lasting. And out there, so many other perfumes are waiting to be discovered.

Will we meet again?
If I had to attribute Banana Republic to a person, it would probably be my first boyfriend. Not because my first perfume was one from BR, but simply because of the feeling that connects me to both:
It is something long past yet familiar. Something exchanged in youthful carefreeness, after all, other mothers have pretty sons and other perfumers have a lucky touch as well. And yet, one does not forget each other; perhaps we just met too early. A bond remains, and even if we see each other again and realize that he or it is not THE ONE in life, feelings and memories, images and scents are awakened deep inside.... and let's be honest, who can really evoke something like that.

Like with my first love, I associate a wonderful time with BR. I brought 'W' back from the USA and it has accompanied me ever since; a lot has happened, and so it slipped (like thoughts of a former youthful love) unnoticed into the background and, in the meantime, into oblivion.

... until a week ago: I stumbled upon the label by chance - the familiar feeling was there immediately! Like browsing through the resume of an ex on Xing, I searched through the perfume history of Banana Republic. A lot has happened there too: 'Rosewood', 'Classic', I know those, but Malachite? Fearlessly, and not even 2 hours later, I ordered this scent and 'Republic of Women' blindly.

Forgive me the renewed association: I met him again! He looked good, I like him because I know who he is, but we have led very different lives for many years, gathered different experiences, and have different preferences, my first boyfriend and I. So it is with Malachite and me: I like where he comes from; for that reason alone, he creates a beautiful feeling for me.... but we are probably not meant for each other. I have nothing to criticize about him: The combination of finely fruity notes with a delicate floral touch warmly flatters my skin and (although almost every new scent that is not somehow fresh and citrusy has a hard time with me now), I gladly engage with him. He is creamy, yes somehow clean, but also warm. I needed some time - now I know: A lovely cream bath ... that describes it best!

Now he has moved in with me, and I let him stay with me and my family, holding him in my heart until the 20 ml (I wasn't that particularly brave after all) are used up... and then we probably won't see each other again anytime soon .... but I will call my first boyfriend soon.

P.S. In terms of longevity, Malachite is not a long-term relationship either, although not quite as fleeting as 'W'. After 4 hours, I still catch a delicate hint, which is nice. It is a mature scent, without being in any way too ladylike. It has no significant development, but is rounded and without unpleasant surprises (I say this because of the vanilla, which usually keeps me from purchases - here it is noble, warm, and slightly bitter, and not at all disturbing).

Short and Sweet - Greenland Meets the Orient
This is once again a scent that I have hardly encountered in this form.
A warm fragrance entry like something out of an oriental picture book is followed by an almost arctic-cool wind veil.
If I were to give this a color, it would be "Ice Turquoise." Or to put it another way: A color like that of the bottle.
But the cold and the warmth do not exist separately; they somehow blend into each other.
Just as if in Greenland, during the summer, there are 25 degrees in the shade during the day, and as soon as the sun disappears behind the horizon, it becomes clear and biting cold, like the past nights here at home....
Through sandalwood and vanilla, there is always a lingering hope throughout the entire fragrance journey that the Orient "exists," and that it is pleasantly warm during the day.
Even here in Greenland.....

Exotic AND local fruits mixed with peppery spice and fresh blooms. Unconventional. With "Nordic-Oriental" interactions :-)

TM-Aura has a similar green, tangy freshness with floral notes, then a distinct, strong hyacinth. Soapy, elegant, clean, special.

Soapy and creamy for me - it doesn't smell green, rather fresh, but like just showered... not my favorite soap scent, but it's okay.

green green green - after a fruity creamy start, I sink into a shallow powder cloud and in the background a bright fresh breeze blows
