Orange-scented Violet Leaf
I arrived fashionably late to the violet leaf party, but Cartier is making it possible to catch up quickly. EAU DE CARTIER ESSENCE D'ORANGE is a flanker of the original violet leaf eau, and also of the CONCENTREE, which I own. I think that if one removed above half of the violet leaf from the CONCENTREE and mixed in some orange, this would be the result.

It's nice, if you like violet leaf and are looking for variations on that theme. So, yes, this really is a flanker which makes sense as a flanker. As an orange eau, ESSENCE D'ORANGE has some stiff competition (chez Hermès and Bond no 9) and must also surmount the preconceptions set up by those much stronger and declarative orange compositions.

EAU DE CARTIER ESSENCE D'ORANGE is much closer to another light orange scent I recently tried, The Different Company SIENNE D'ORANGE. Both of these creations may seem orange deficient next to the Hermès ORANGES VERTES or LITTLE ITALY. They are also neither very citrusy nor very bracing and aromatic.

I appear to be developing an addiction to violet leaf, so although I was initially disappointed by this flanker, having myself found it to be too light on the orange and too heavy on the violet leaf, I have to admit that I enjoy wearing it! The bottle design is also beautiful--the same as the others.

Essence D'Violet instead
This is a flanker that reminds a lot of the original one.

The main difference is a orange note that was added - a shy orange note that's very weak by the way. The violet is still the main player.

It's a bit powdery in the drydown.

Lasting power, sillage and projecion are low-medium.

Good choice for summer, but i'd stay with the original one.

Was there something?
I can only agree with my predecessor and will spare you the repetition. Just one thing: The violet is indeed noticeable. This note is olfactorily related to iris and, like it, provides a powdery quality. This is also the case here. I only want to refer to the similarity of Prada's powdery scents Infusion d'Homme (Iris) and Prada Amber pour Homme (Violet).

I am not fundamentally against super subtle perfumes. If they envelop the wearer with a mysterious aura instead of a cloud of scent, that's fine. For those looking for something like that: Kenzopower or Duel by Annick Goutal. But this cannot be achieved with simple orange water.

The scent is really very beautiful. However, 6 (!) sprays on the wrist only produced a delicate, transparent-powdery orange scent directly on the skin.

This is only for the very shy, who dare not try anything at all. When it comes to summery orange or mandarin, I stick with Clinique Happy for Men.

Was Grandpa Here?
Just as I sprayed Essence d' Orange on my arm for testing, my dad comes home, sniffs, and asks: "Was Grandpa here?"
No, he wasn't here, but yes, it smells a lot like my grandpa!
EdO starts off citrusy-fresh, then a robust orange takes over. The scent is primarily shaped by cedar, which reminds me of Pitralon, but in a much, much better way. It gives the whole thing a rugged, spicy warmth.

I really like EdO, probably also because it’s my grandpa's scent. I wouldn't wear it myself, as it's too masculine for me.

Olde Fashion, Olde Worlde
After the regular Eau de Cartier and the Concentrée didn't quite convince me - the former smells too much like violet for my taste, the latter has a penetratingly bitter herbal note - I give "Eau de Cartier Essence d'Orange" another chance. And voilà - it truly deserves it!

Like Déclaration, Eau de Cartier is also a multifaceted chypre fragrance - quite dry, yet by no means sporty, but with a strict oakmoss spiciness. But it is the orange with its sweetness that really brings out the potential of this rich fragrance accord. The result is a noble perfume of the old school, reminiscent of the very old classics from Guerlain (like Jicky), certainly heavy on the nose, but still exhibiting a modern transparency.

That's why I've just decided to wear this fragrance to my wedding, paired with a top hat and a tailcoat, to dance a waltz and ride through Vienna in a horse-drawn carriage.

Interesting. Bitter woody orange. Missing = petitgrain, neroli, orange blossoms?

Bitter orange meets cedar, together they whisper a song I’ve known for a long time.

Bitter, tangy orange with character for her and him - very classic and old school - I like it!
