Jersey Eau de Toilette by Chanel
It's interesting to read all the reviews of Jersey. If you're looking for a simple lavender in the Yardley style, it will disappoint. Instead, Jersey is essentially a grand old aldehydic chypre with the lavender acting as the upfront brightness in place of the aldehydes. It has a proto-Chanel base, a super-creamy mix incorporating the musk, sandalwood, and powdery soapy flowers of No 5, the carroty iris of 28 La Pausa, and their trademark slightly-funky gardenia.

In the end, I suppose it all comes down to whether or not you think they pulled it off. I personally think it's fantastic, though I can't find any fault with Persolaise's negative review either - it's just a matter of taste. Honestly, the lavender is sweetened with a grape soda smell that's a bit questionable and the soapy flowers occasionally border on laundry, but I think they pulled it off. In short, if you go in expecting a simple but fabulous lavender, you'll be disappointed, but if you go in expecting a Chanel, you may find a clever new favorite.

The Real Bleu de Chanel!
Herbaceous lavender and powdery orris root – what a wonderful idea to combine them! I like both, and although they are different, they have a basic character in common: they are “bleu”.

Whoever expects a fragrance to be animalic, opulent or sexy will be disappointed by Jersey. These are cool notes - they provide distance, not nearness. In spite of the fact that lavender blooms under southern skies, the British use it for their lavender waters, and it also plays a role in the original sharp Fougère accord. I use my lavenders mostly on Monday morning: their statement is a farewell to the weekend and its sensual pleasures. It sets things straight again and provides the right mood for the beginning of the working week.

Orris, however, is ambiguous. It doesn’t entirely point away from the body, and the attribute “powdery” does not completely describe it. Additionally, the orris has a paper-like must which in a strange way does relate back to the body. But its dry, powdery side rather provides distance since dustiness is just the opposite of bodily warmth and humidity.

Like no other, the combination of orris and lavender is capable to express the theme of distance and aloofness – fitting to the image of the grey jersey lady’s suit. But it is the attributes of the orris itself which, on the other hand, breaks up with this image and thus, provides a thrill.

The sternness of this image is attenuated by a tender musk and some vanilla. Especially in the head note, the vanilla defies the lavender in a proven way. It steps back, once the lavender is defeated. Most of all, lavender is top note, and the possibilities to fix it seem to be limited. So, a perfumer’s objective must be not to let it end abrupt but to transfer its vibrations to the following notes. It is clear to me that this simply must work out with orris!

Like a diffuser scrim the musk envelops the fragrance events. This sort of musk is soft and tender, it allays the sternness which otherwise may dominate such a gray, inaccessible fragrance. Although the herbaceous lavender note has not been alienated as such, Jersey nevertheless may be regarded as a ladies’ scent – but, not exclusively for ladies!

According to the choice of the main notes, Jersey does not have an overwhelming longevity, but at times, there is quite some sillage. IMHO, accepting the natural limitations of some of the base material should also be part of our perfume culture. Purchasing a small travel flacon for your pocket is advisable for Jersey.

At least in my country, lavender is currently not a popular trend in perfumery. I am pleased that at Chanel, they had the courage to delve into that topic nevertheless. Jersey is perfectly done, however, you will have to make up your mind about the occasions and situations that you would like to wear this fragrance.

Casual and luxurious at the same time
Jersey is the perfect lavender. It's slightly sweetened with vanilla, and it is rather white-musky. It reminds me of the lavender & vanilla-scented dryer sheets I used to use. A very soft and cozy perfume (as strong musks tend to be) that would do well in all seasons and would suit casual occasions. Lavender tends to become masculine on me, but there is no hint of men's aftershave in this very ladylike perfume. When I want the luxury of Chanel, but No.5 and Coromandel seem too extravagant for running errands or having tea with friends, I reach for Jersey. It has all the makings of a Chanel perfume, minus the pomp.

Office-Appropriate Lavender
Lavender is one of my favourite notes, and while I do enjoy wearing Chanel's Jersey, (as strange as this might sound), I wish it were more masculine. I love big, bold and herbaceous lavender scents, however Jersey is more refined, sweet and girly. It's pleasant nonetheless, but nothing that I would personally pay $300 or more to own.

The opening has quite a soothing lavender top note, with a hint of spice. I was rather enjoying this fragrance until the vanilla and jasmine softened the lavender, almost smothering it at one point. In most cases I adore vanilla, but since it was unexpected, it had a somewhat rude arrival.

I was reading a magazine just yesterday that suggested Chanel Jersey as an office appropriate scent. I would have to agree. It wears inoffensively on the skin, quite unlike other Chanel Les Exclusifs. It's not nearly as strong or loud as my coveted Coromandel.

Jersey is too tame for my personal tastes. I want to rough it up a bit, perhaps even try layering it with heavier, more brash notes. The drydown is almost clean, like the scent of lavender soaps and white, musky linen.

The key to enjoying Jersey is not to set the bar too high prior to testing it. You also shouldn't expect to be blown over backwards with 'out of this world' sillage. Appreciate it for what it is.

I'm still searching for a replacement for Annick Goutal's Eau de Lavande. So far, nothing, not even Chanel's Jersey has come even remotely close. Jersey is pretty, but for the price, there are unfortunately better, and cheaper lavender scents on the market.

Oh Jersey ... you are like spring!
Spring ... the season that one longs for so much in winter.
The first delicate green ... soft splashes of color from the first spring flowers ... gentle sun rays that slowly become warmer.
Jersey ... is spring in a bottle :)

Thanks to the lovely Parfuma for sending me this fine sample ... the scent immediately jumped onto my wish list and before I knew it, it was directly in my collection through another Parfuma :)
I actually wanted to wait and test the EdP ... but what do I care about my chatter from yesterday when spring is at the door and the EdT has unfortunately been discontinued :)
I can always test the EdP later ... but now let's talk about Jersey!

About the scent:
Jersey starts off on my skin dry, powdery, and green. Grass and wildflowers blend together on the skin.
Slowly, lavender comes into play ... scratchy, even very scratchy, it spices up the scent. Still, it brings a feeling of well-being that hits me. Pure relaxation!
Rose and jasmine slowly join the "scratchy brush." It remains dry-powdery ... but Jersey is slowly warming on the skin ... like the first sun rays that tickle my skin.
With vanilla and tonka, we move into the base. Lavender and wildflowers plus delicate green now stay subtly in the background ... but never completely leave the scent progression.
The vanilla is never intrusive or too sweet, and the same goes for tonka. Everything falls into a cotton-soft musk bed in the base.
Powdery-floral ... slightly sweet with purple-green splashes of color ... that is Jersey ... and it has enchanted me ... it is truly spring in a bottle for me!
You should definitely like lavender ... it is a "scratchy brush" here ... but it is beautifully embraced by the other notes and becomes significantly softer over time.
Jersey fits perfectly into spring and certainly into summer. It fits the cooler season only conditionally ... more like when one is longing for spring feelings on the skin :)
The longevity is about 8 hours ... the sillage is rather subtle.
A scent that always works and fits ... and never becomes intrusive.
The bottle is simple and beautiful ... like the others in the Exclusif line as well.

Conclusion:
Oh Jersey ... you are like spring!
Lavender-wildflowers ... dry ... powdery.
Enchanting with vanilla-tonka and cotton-soft musk!

I personally am more than happy to have secured an EdT ... but I am also very curious about the EdP, which probably has a bit of the scratchy opening taken away :)

Nobody seems to have this association, so it's clearly my brain. More objectively, it's a smooth but fresh juice with the exact feel of Jers

Fruity lavender, nicely sweetened and dusted with tonka vanilla powder. I much prefer the fresh, cool boy.

Green meadow with wildflowers, already slightly dried out. The lavender is also a bit dry and bland. A bit special but leaves me cold.

So on Jersey it smells like wound disinfectant, bicycle tube, and wood. Sounds plausible, actually. Still disappointing.

How much I appreciate the understated... And when I catch the last hint of it in my clothes the next day, I'm already hooked again.

Refreshing lavender note at the start, which becomes warmer and creamier, dried field flowers and grasses + vanilla pod surround the lavender.

Sprayed on clothes, it smells strongly of lavender...on the skin, more like dry grass / flowers,
but I like it that way :-)

An elegant, subtly feminine, unpretentious scent that interprets lavender as an aura for the pearl necklace: floral notes and musk.

Such a scent (like all Exclusifs) that no one talks about because everyone thinks: "XY has a pleasant natural scent." Not a perfume, a scent.
