Postmodern chypre
This Eau de Parfum by Comme des Garçons is a great, solid, thick scent with a really complex harmony of synthetic notes which are quite hard to get and dissect separately: I smell musk, leather, aldehydes, a pale, sharp and cold floral accord, a really weird “whatever” (note? Accord?) smelling halfway milk, industrial waste gas, glue and minerals; then green hints, cedar, cloves, all genially blended together in a really tight texture which smells just like a unique, rich, alien “smell”. Basically, as much weird as it may sound, the pyramid is quite trustworthy, as EdP smells indeed somewhere inbetween glue, scotch tape, hyper-polished leather, some sort of odd industrial gassy milk, synthetic grass and musky powder. All refreshed by an icy breeze of thin flowers and spices. The thing is there is really no contrast here, it’s just a flawless potion with its own unique and nondescript smell. I’d define this as a sort of glueish-aldehydic-leathery-postmodern musky-floral chypre drowned in a can of milk from outer space. It’s really clever and compelling, incredibly creative, yet – and that’s the big added value – perfectly pleasant, versatile, refined and not challenging at all: you can just forget about all the avantgarde bollocks and enjoy it as a perfect, simple, anywhere-safe everyday scent. No need to be an enthusiast fume-head with a “penchant” for avantgarde scents or a CdG fanboy to appreciate this. Just an impeccable and easy-going work of modern art. Which is one of the greatest abilities of Comme des Garçons – to produce clever, incredibly creative modern stuff, always keeping it perfectly wearable and appealing for pretty much anyone. The only flaw here may be the linearity, which may get kind of boring after a while. But apart from that, worthy at least a try for sure.

White Flowers on Another Planet
I finally got a sample of "A New Perfume", and I must say that it is Comme des Garçons in truest form. The fragrance has a strange beauty - in a way that only CdG can provide. The odd appeal of the fragrance is a perfect match for the flacon - and a clearly correct interpretation of Rei Kawakubo's visionary approach to fashion, specifically her "lumpy" stuff. Just in the same way that it's hard to stop looking at her fashions, so too is it hard to stop sniffing this fragrance.

There are times in many perfumes, when the flatness and synthetic aspects of floral aroma chemicals such as Lyral and Lilial provide an unwelcome distraction, grating on the nerves like an uncentered jacket, or a loop-skipping belt. Here, the deficit is magnified but then put in balance with the "florally correct" aspects of the fragrance. The result is a beautiful melange - a dry, bready, synthetic white floral that seems pretty and pretty wrong at the same time. It's almost gourmand in a way, but only in the same way that white latex paint seems appealing when you're hungry.

There is a certain chalkiness that rides along with the fresh and floral notes - it seems to add to the appeal. The composition is excellent on both paper and skin, without a lot of obvious differences.

Overall, this fragrance seems readily wearable by a guy, even though it's quite pretty as well. It is very unisex, and yet does not seem to compromise in being so. As a lover of fresh scents, I have to think that this offering is a cut above most fresh scents. It is definitely worth investigating, despite the difficulties that one is likely to face in procuring a sample.

Futuristic lilacs
I have never tried anything like it. The scent combines the floral notes with a number of synthetic components and I thought that it would be difficult to wear but I was wrong. The notes fit seamlessly together creating an unusual but beautiful, fresh scent perfect for an upcoming spring. The scent is exciting and innovative. It is a wild romance of tender, natural lilacs and industrial, futuristic elements that are totally in love with each other.

I do not know how safraleine is supposed to smell but the opening smells to me fresh and a bit green with very pleasant, clean and light aldehydes. I am a big lilacs fan and I admire how the lilac note is used in this scent. I can smell lilacs right away and they continue to shine in the heart notes. There is an airy quality to the scent, a bit abstract but beautiful and spring-like. For some reason I think about being high up in the air on an hot air-balloon surrounded by the vastness of an open space and looking down at the lilacs garden. Once the freshness of heart notes passes, the dry down on my skin is totally abstract and industrial but very pleasant. It has a bit of a leather-like quality but not a strong one.

I am really impressed with this perfume. It is definitely representing a new trend in a perfumery and I admire how Comme Des Garcons managed to create such a beautiful and wearable scent with these unusual components. Full bottle worthy for me.

Soap vs. Glue
I bought this perfume because I read it smelled like brown tape and glue. I would totally go for that. Once I got the bottle, I must say i do get some glue, and some tape, but also a lot of soapiness. This is a slight disappointment to me, as a lover of anti-perfumes, but I could see this perfume grow on me potentially. The bottle is gorgeous, that's a good thing as well.

Paris est une belle ville and parcel tape smells delicious.
Prologue:
June 2024, the annual short trip to Paris with my better half is coming up. The bags are packed. The TGV leaves the station at the crack of dawn. a 3-hour journey full of anticipation, beautiful panoramas, endless fields and little civilization. As usual, the TGV arrives punctually at the Gare de l'est. Oh, how nice train travel can be. It's ten o'clock in the morning, the apartment is within walking distance and the weather forecast promises four days of late spring/early summer weather - whatever you want to call it.

Main part:
Le Marais (Paris), while strolling through this wonderful, energetic and young neighborhood, I happen to walk past Dover Steet Market Paris, which was on my to-do list anyway. Get in there! The store is housed in a palatial building with a minimalist design. Lots of avant-garde and exclusive fashion pieces that I will never be able to afford, but which I always enjoy looking at.

Off to the perfume creations from COMME des GARÇONS. I really like this brand because, in addition to fragrances that can easily be worn in everyday life, it also produces various fragrances that are, how shall I put it, simply different. Unsuspectingly, I look at the shelf and a strange bottle immediately catches my eye. I felt a bit like Joe Goldberg from the series "you" when I asked myself the following question: Who are you? What do you want to represent? Impulsively, I took the bottle and sprayed it onto a test strip without much hesitation. My questions were answered immediately. In my opinion, the Comme des Garçons (2011) bottle represents a liquid glue that is peppered with air bubbles. But the fragrance is not that simple. At first, I smell something very industrial and artificial that I can't define. A look at the fragrance pyramid shows me. Industrial adhesive and parcel tape. Parcel tape it is! 1:1 as if I were smelling the adhesive side of a freshly unrolled roll. WOW! This scent fitted right into this store. I have rarely experienced anything like it. This dry, artificial but also impersonal scent has something avant-garde about it that I could hardly describe. Spray on my wrist and get out into the fresh air again. I keep catching myself sniffing and my girlfriend also has to hold her nose to my wrist several times over the next few hours. Again and again I ask her, but also myself. "He's really crazy, isn't he?". And yes, it is. As it progresses, the lilac and hawthorn accords, as well as the other fragrance notes, are added, turning it into a synthetic-floral dream. A dream that turns you into a different person, but which I personally wouldn't want to wear every day because it's too special.

Epilogue:
As I sat at my desk today, the weather was quite cool but the sun was shining. I sprayed on this fragrance and was immediately impressed again. So enthusiastic that I said to myself. Okay, today I'm writing my first review for you.

Thank you
