The end is nigh….
One day back in 2001, I walked into Allders (a long since departed department store) in Surrey, England, looking for a new scent for a date I had coming up. Saw this little freshie and thought I’d give it a go. The smell was incredible, the freshness was startling, the compliments (from more people than just the girl I took out on a date) were regular. This started my 22 year love affair with this scent. It was my signature, I still to this day, don’t know anyone else who’s even smelt it, let alone worn it. My wife (not the lady I took out on that date in 2001!) adores it, and, until about 3 months ago, I felt the same. One morning I put it on and it just didn’t seem to carry the same projection, the top notes seemed muted, the fresh but at the same time complex smell was almost barely noticeable and within a couple of hours I couldn’t smell anything. I put it down to the bottle having been occasionally left in the bathroom and maybe the change in temperatures had altered it. So I did what any normal person would do… I went to Dior and bought a brand new bottle. It arrived the following day, I hastily opened the parcel, dug through the snazzy Dior paper shreddings and took out the brand new £97 bottle (In 2001, I believe it cost me £32!) I opened it all up, sprayed the back of my neck and my arms as per usual and waited for the kick of fresh, complicated and fruity scent to hit me like a train and take me back to my usual feeling when I spray. Only it didn’t. Yes, it was a bit brighter and no where near as muted as my older bottle I just replaced was, but the rest of what Higher had ever made me feel was on its knees. I have come to the sad realisation that not only is Higher pretty much only available directly from Dior, so it’s only a matter of time before even they throw the towel in on it but the last 22 years haven’t been kind to it. My journey as a fragrance collector and enthusiast is only a few months old, but even with the little knowledge I have acquired in this short period of time, I already know that Higher will not only be replaced as my signature scent (Tom Ford Grey Vetiver Parfum, for those interested) but it is highly likely that it won’t even be in the mix of a top 5 smell very soon. As the title of my review…. The end is nigh.
