Comfort food

Like This appears to have two distinct phases. The opening and then the rest, basically. The opening feels very 'perfumey'. Fruity floral to a certain extent with added bits of resin and tobacco. At this stage, if feels feminine and extravagant, something for a big night out.

This entree is a bit of a deception, though. As the first notes have evaporated, the composition lands in a more home-like setting. A relaxed afternoon in the kitchen, to be more precise. From this point onward, things stay on the sweeter, edible side with mostly warm spice and a gourmandish powder.

An unusual but not awkwardly odd creation. Actually kind of comfortable and pretty wearable for an ELdO.

Didn´t Like This...

I am kind of reluctant to write a negative review about a fragance just because my personal preference falls in other direction. In the case of Tilda Swinton/ Like This I guess i was expecting something else, and i was really excited about the pumpkin/ginger. Indeed they are really appealing, so are the other notes, on paper and in real life. But the high pitched, heady mandarin totally spoils it for me. The combo white flower/mandarin i have smelled so many times (pure poison, catch me, even when there is no mandarin listed: jaïpur bracelet) gives me the impression i am smelling the same juice over and over. Pretty but i don´t like it. I will never know if i would like the evolution of Like This, because after half an hour i scrubbed it under hot water and I don´t know what type of chemical reaction i triggered with the soap, the Like This and the hot water, but the revenge of Tilda came as a puke-ish waft coming from my hand.

Don´t let my words disencourage you to sample this fragance, it is girly, only slightly odd and i guess wearable, as long as you like mandarin.

Opening is amazing, drydown is a letdown

Ok I'm not going to lie, by this stage in my journey though the ELdO discovery kit (x20) I was getting a bit dubious that I would enjoy any of them, they're all a bit too synthetic and strong with something odd to my nose going on in there so I tried this (one spray) on one wrist and another one (sous le pont) on the other to get the testing over and done with, which was quite a fun idea as I got to compare them directly.

This started out truly yummy. The opening blast and subsequent hour was a gorgeously well blended mandarin and pumpkin to me. I didn't get any hints of anything weird or funky it just smelled amazing and I was super excited this was a winner, as it dried down it went through a gorgeous creamy heliotrope infused phase which I also loved, before promptly settling into a very 'old lady' vibe floral. This was disappointing because it was not the vibe I got from the opening or even the start of the dry down and it just changed the fragrance into something else. Not awful and definitely not a 'hate' because it doesn't smell screechy, synthetic or bad to me just turned into something a little disappointing. Longevity was ok and sillage was pretty close to skin for me.

Hot and freckled

When it´s cold outside and you drink a big cup of your favorite tea, you know that warmth from within feeling you got? Like This works on the same way, but obviously from the outside. I can also compare it to an exotic dish with aromatic spices and a subtle heat from chili. And that little sting in ginger ale. Yes, Like This is a foody scent which is most at home in the gourmand corner of perfumery, still it´s not sweet, cloying or heavy at all, it´s more kind of refreshingly gourmand. Since I´m usually a gourmand lover it´s not that strange that I really like Like This, but I think it could please even people not usually so much into gourmand scents as well.

Like This is a homey scent, comfy and strangely familiar. Sometimes when I wear it I get dissapointed when I realise I won´t get any freckles, since it makes me feel like I actually have freckles...

Good longevity and nice sillage without getting disturbing.

Warm soupy comfort of your mum's kitchen

Although I smell everything I was supposed to - the pumpkin, the ginger, the tangerines, the immortelle, the whiskey - the lines between the notes in Like This always seem blurred and fuzzy, like everything melted down into a big pot of pumpkin soup. Then I realized two things. First, that there is a sort of charm to having all the notes gleam in an orange and gold register. It's a deliberate choice, not a mistake. The soft ochres and burnt siennas of the notes are there to provide a tight, muted symphony of voices all in the same range rather than to feature the depths and heights of a full Wagnerian opera. Confining the perfume to such a limited palette forces it to find the common threads and unite them.

I think that the unifying thread in Like This, underneath the samey sludge of orange-ochre-gold tonalities, is a dry sort of sweetness. Ginger root is both hot and sweet, pumpkin is both waxy-starchy and vegetally sweet, tangerines are citrusy and sweet, whiskey is smoky and sweet, and immortelle is salty and sweet. Like This is a blanket knitted from the sweetness of these orange notes, leaving the secondary characteristics to bubble up underneath. So now when I wear Like This, my mind is at last able to peel back the thick, sweet orange wool and make out the shapes and movements of things below: burned toffee, a smoky, peaty Scottish whiskey, the gentle curried warmth of immortelle, maple syrup, hot ginger root, woody cinnamon bark, and a pleasantly waxy lipstick note (or vintage cosmetic powder). It's like letting your eyes adjust to pitch black and then seeing everything slowly take shape through the gloom.
