Interesting Facts
The perfume name supposedly refers to the Japanese traditional belief that the "Hatsu-yume", the "first dream in the new year", would tell your fortune of the subsequent year. The Mount Fuji and the hawk, as featured on the bottle, are considered as especially fortunate omens. The fragrance is part of the "Enigmatic Flowers" collection.

Well, I like it
Contrary to the average rating on Parfumo, I find the First Dream of the Year quite appealing, but that’s also because I really like neroli and orange blossoms. The longevity on my skin is absolutely fine at around 8 hours, and the sillage is okay as well - but looking at the price... Okay... Yes, this is not a candidate for purchase :D

The top note starts, as mentioned, directly with a lot of neroli and orange blossoms. Grapefruit, oranges, and mandarins are also present, providing a nice freshness. The heart note remains floral and creates a powdery effect thanks to iris, violet, and jasmine flowers. Petitgrain keeps the scent fruity-citrusy but also beautifully greenish. I also think of soap and fabric softener. The base is rather subdued and comes with a hint of bourbon vanilla and musk.

If I set aside the price, I truly find the First Dream of the Year well done. But yes, what is offered here is nothing I would want to buy in this price range. I thank Nick once again for the manufacturer sample.

Dreamy
A sour-bitter opening that makes me want to bite directly into the grapefruit. It has character - and it even smells fun. But within a minute, the zest fades away, leaving a fine acidity on a dry-bitter base. This too dissipates after yet another all-too-brief moment, and after maybe two or three minutes, a layer of orange blossom laundry detergent takes over.

The fragrance now rests on this for a long time. In the following hours, only a few things twitch here and there, while the sillage glides into free fall: orangey green close to the skin. Later in the morning, I think of a slice of heavily toasted gray bread. Dull laundry freshness at noon, then something reminiscent of a swimming pool.

By early afternoon, a pale, medium-light wood has quietly been reached, which is refined with iris. Essentially a superb idea, and something similar happens excellently in ‘Italian Citrus’, ‘[96Cm] Curium’ or ‘Vanille d’Iris’. Here, however, it’s just a breeze and manages to save little. The fact that the fragrance somewhat returns in the evening (the wood becomes warmer, rounder) doesn’t really help anymore.

Conclusion: Disappointing. Even if the start can justifiably be called spectacular - it is a flash in the pan that extinguishes faster than any citrus fragrance typically does. And to simply end up on wood after just about five hours is meager.

I thank Verbena for the sample.

After a bright fresh-citric opening, this clean Summer fragrance settles to a soft powdery fruity-floral base. Rather simple and linear.

Pretty orange blossom and citrus, but not that original. For the price, I’d expect a lot more.

Orange blossom is too over powering for me. And similar smelling scents for less, ex. Jo Malone.

Scrubbed clean, almost antiseptic O-flower enriched with lots of floral soap. Quite kitschy and artificial, but I’m really into it.

Fruity grapefruit & bitter petitgrain are overshadowed by powdery fabric softener flowers = Synthetic fruity-floral for women. Ugh.

The dream of green bitterness,
that fills the night,
blows delicate smoke on powderiness,
the citrus feels concealed.

You get what you read: fruity-sweet grapefruit, orange blossom, and a hint of iris: green, citrusy, fruity, fresh, cool, bright, soapy!

That never happens to me. I don't dream of grapefruit-orange blossom soap.
But maybe the scent fits the upcoming spring cleaning.
