No, the name wouldn't rock as a perfume name. But...
...Chypre reminds me a lot of 31 Rue Cambon. I wore both today specifically to compare. The Chanel scent is a bit more chypre, meaning a bit fresher and fluffier, whereas Chypre by Florascent has more spice to it. But they are indeed very similar. For me, Chypre is 31 Rue Cambon with a splash of Midori. I've read bolder comparisons here, and besides, no one really knows Chypre anyway, and (also) that's why it's pointless to want to challenge me here, regarding the Holy Chanel being dethroned by simple natural perfume.
For all those unfamiliar with 31 Rue Cambon and/or Midori: Chypre is a floral, subtly sweet gourmand and distinctly spicy fragrance with chypre notes. I know, that's pretty vague talk, but I really can't pick out individual components. Interested parties should study the descriptions of 31 Rue Cambon and Midori and create a fusion.
I must admit that I had quite a bit of difficulty with Chypre. (Just like with 31 Rue Cambon - Yes, I am a late bloomer from time to time.) I tested Chypre several times until it clicked. The initial similarity to Midori (which I have in my collection and from which I didn't want a chypre copy) almost made me angry.
And then the name Chypre, for which I expected something different, especially since the fragrance was released this spring and was also sampled by me - and a true spring or summer scent, as I expected, Chypre is not for me. It is much too full-bodied, too spicy.
By the way, after some wear time, it develops a very nice balsamic creaminess, but, needless to say, not the beloved sunscreen touch that some adore.
Now in autumn, I really like Chypre. Yep.
Oh yes, I have also understood the chypre character of Chypre by now. (You sometimes have to get used to such elegant scents.) Therefore, I think I could even test it next spring and maybe understand it then. Always nice and slow.
I like 31 Rue Cambon a bit better, does that surprise anyone? But for that, Chypre is a pure natural scent, it's easier to access than 31 Rue Cambon, and you also have to shell out significantly less money for it.
It lasts quite well, the sillage is mediocre, and the color of the liquid absolutely matches the scent for me.
I am glad to have made peace with Chypre after my initial outrage. I even consider a marriage to be not out of the question now.
