The Daydreams of Yesteryear
My first stop on my last London perfume hunt took me straight to 89 Jermyn Street, the home of Floris. Originally just a planned detour to quickly spray “Lavender” and take it with me. With classic lavender scents, I can hardly go wrong - no, they can truly transport me to ecstasy!
My disappointment was all the greater when the nice salesperson presented me with all sorts of treasures in response to my question about lavender scents, but not this simple “Lavender.” When I inquired further, he said the fragrance was no longer in the lineup, but that Floris, for some unfathomable reason, was still hoarding some in a warehouse - and that they could always be ordered online during the post-Christmas clearance.
Only half consoled, I immediately made my way to Fortnum & Mason, which is nearby, to soothe my sorrow with a bottle of “Sylvan Song” by Grossmith. Since then, I waited, and indeed, after Christmas, “Lavender” appeared at a bargain price in the Floris online shop and was promptly ordered.
And now I sit comfortably in the armchair that belonged to my husband’s great-grandfather, a truly wonderfully old-fashioned Baroque piece with curved, upholstered mahogany armrests, the backrest framed by an elaborately carved, ornate wooden frame. Of course, it comes with a matching footstool and is wonderfully comfortable, as I assure you.
You might be wondering what such an ancient piece of furniture has to do with Floris Lavender. Quite a lot, actually!
For the scent fits wonderfully with this piece of furniture: old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, solid, perfectly crafted, lovingly designed, and absolutely timeless. Just as the great-grandfather's chair is a focal point in an otherwise modern room, yet does not appear as a foreign body or antiquated, but simply IS with all the dignity of its age, so Lavender is also there quite naturally, as if it has always floated in this room.
Until now, I would have claimed that Island Lavender by Caldey is the most beautiful lavender scent I know, but now I find myself pondering. At first, I find the two quite similar, a crystal-clear, transparent light lavender immediately captivates me. Not herbaceous or sharp, but mild, fresh, and not soapy at all. Yet behind the wonderful top note of Floris lies much more. Perhaps a violet along with its leaf - or another modest bloom. It is a very natural, soulful pleasure, free from any synthetic notes. In the depth, I can sense a hint of noble wood that gives Lavender a certain substance.
The scent does not attempt at all to pretend to be anything other than what it is. A simple, elegant, understated whisper, perhaps a vague memory of earlier times when simplicity still meant great enjoyment and saturation had not yet taken over. A softly melancholic daydream of long-gone days.
