The Daydreams of Yesteryear

My first stop on my last London perfume hunt took me straight to 89 Jermyn Street, the home of Floris. Originally just a planned detour to quickly spray “Lavender” and take it with me. With classic lavender scents, I can hardly go wrong - no, they can truly transport me to ecstasy!
My disappointment was all the greater when the nice salesperson presented me with all sorts of treasures in response to my question about lavender scents, but not this simple “Lavender.” When I inquired further, he said the fragrance was no longer in the lineup, but that Floris, for some unfathomable reason, was still hoarding some in a warehouse - and that they could always be ordered online during the post-Christmas clearance.
Only half consoled, I immediately made my way to Fortnum & Mason, which is nearby, to soothe my sorrow with a bottle of “Sylvan Song” by Grossmith. Since then, I waited, and indeed, after Christmas, “Lavender” appeared at a bargain price in the Floris online shop and was promptly ordered.
And now I sit comfortably in the armchair that belonged to my husband’s great-grandfather, a truly wonderfully old-fashioned Baroque piece with curved, upholstered mahogany armrests, the backrest framed by an elaborately carved, ornate wooden frame. Of course, it comes with a matching footstool and is wonderfully comfortable, as I assure you.
You might be wondering what such an ancient piece of furniture has to do with Floris Lavender. Quite a lot, actually!
For the scent fits wonderfully with this piece of furniture: old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, solid, perfectly crafted, lovingly designed, and absolutely timeless. Just as the great-grandfather's chair is a focal point in an otherwise modern room, yet does not appear as a foreign body or antiquated, but simply IS with all the dignity of its age, so Lavender is also there quite naturally, as if it has always floated in this room.
Until now, I would have claimed that Island Lavender by Caldey is the most beautiful lavender scent I know, but now I find myself pondering. At first, I find the two quite similar, a crystal-clear, transparent light lavender immediately captivates me. Not herbaceous or sharp, but mild, fresh, and not soapy at all. Yet behind the wonderful top note of Floris lies much more. Perhaps a violet along with its leaf - or another modest bloom. It is a very natural, soulful pleasure, free from any synthetic notes. In the depth, I can sense a hint of noble wood that gives Lavender a certain substance.

The scent does not attempt at all to pretend to be anything other than what it is. A simple, elegant, understated whisper, perhaps a vague memory of earlier times when simplicity still meant great enjoyment and saturation had not yet taken over. A softly melancholic daydream of long-gone days.

Be Quiet!
Uncommented Fragrances No. 114

What can one write about a fragrance that claims to be a soliflore, even though it is not upon closer inspection, and that likely comes across as far too traditional (first appeared in 1821 - certainly in a different form) and modest for most ambitious perfumers?

First of all, perhaps this: that the fragrance is not as one-dimensional as one might think given the sparse information currently available (as of the date of this comment) (lavender; see above).
The manufacturer actually lists significantly more fragrance notes, but this also leads one down a false trail:
Source: https://www.florislondon.com/en_eur/lavender-eau-de-toilette-1 (Accessed on 03.02.18)
Top Notes: bergamot and clary sage
Heart Notes: english lavender, geranium, jasmine, violet
Base Notes: cedarwood, vanilla
The aforementioned details have been submitted as a suggestion for change (thanks to WitweBolte for the tip about the homepage!).

However, while the mention of "lavender" does not adequately describe the fragrance, the above details from Floris suggest that the fragrance is much more complex than it actually is.
Upon spraying on skin, fabric, or a scent strip, a very classic, sharp, light-floral lavender scent emerges, just as one might expect from traditional fragrance houses in England (Caldey Island, Yardley, D.R. Harris) or France (manufacturers from Grasse or old scents from traditional houses in Paris). But then, quite quickly, a somewhat sweeter (vanilla?) and green-floral note creeps in, casting doubt on whether the fragrance is indeed a soliflore. It is distinguished from classic lavender laundry and wardrobe sprays or the rather humorless (yet good) lavender scents from Harry Lehmann by a more embracing, elegant, yet still distinctly British aura.

It must be noted, however, that the aforementioned fragrance components are not isolatable in the scent, and until the end (one should not expect too long a lasting power from a classic lavender scent), a soft, bright, less sharp lavender dominates.
I could perhaps imagine that alongside the aforementioned vanilla (it could also have been a hint of tonka or amber, at least in homeopathic doses), there are also violets (a slightly harsher floral component) and an herbal spiciness included.

What does one do with such a fragrance? Well, the target audience is not that of sillage monster lovers, as I prefer to speak of a fleeting aura; nor is it that of complex oriental incense, which goes without saying. One must appreciate quieter fragrances and accept that lavender, once sprayed, lasts for a while and then quietly slips away again. As a laundry spray, the original application area of some traditional lavender colognes, it is far too precious. Floris' Lavender is ideal for lavender lovers who suffer a bit from the fact that many lavender soliflores possess an almost sharp, somewhat harsh note, making such a fragrance seem somewhat off-putting. Floris, on the other hand, has succeeded in showcasing lavender in its most beautiful form, placing it in the spotlight from beginning to end, but with an intelligently composed framework that enhances it even further, just as a suitable frame does for a painting. For lavender lovers like me, a great but quiet achievement with considerable tradition (first version: 1821).

A really soft lavender that isn't sweet or heavy. Perfect for everyday and warm weather. Very subtle, but really great.

The initially quite harsh lavender loses much of its severity thanks to flowers, woods & fine vanilla, but remains recognizable. Old-school.
