Interesting Facts
The popularity of Shalimar is supposed to have caused another company, presumably Dubarry et Cie., to also publish a fragrance called Shalimar. Due to an expired license, the use of the name Shalimar should have been possible for the other company, resulting in a legal dispute to the disadvantage of Guerlain. Subsequently, Shalimar was exported temporarily with the catalog stock number (No. 90). In some cases, No. 91 is said to have been used as well.
Variant of the fragrance concentration
This is a variant of the perfume Shalimar (Eau de Toilette) by Guerlain, which differs in concentration.

The Weight and Lightness of Being
Finally! The turbulent days are over, the days before the days, the days between the days, the holidays themselves, and now almost also the days after the days. The anticipation was still quite nice, but the celebrations themselves have become too hectic, too loud, too many opinions, considerations, and changes to the usual daily routine. The world around her is changing quickly, too quickly for her and faster than before. This is not only because she is already old and a bit clumsy. She also no longer wants to participate in everything. The pale, gray hair hangs straggly over a face full of wrinkles and deep furrows, which such a long life has left too often and too clearly as traces. It does not make her any happier that she surely shares her fate with thousands of other women. Her zest for life, her desire for new experiences, and her happiness seem buried in the past.

Now she has retreated again into her own little world in her room and is looking at her Christmas gifts, all still neatly wrapped and unopened. Even though everyone under the tree was calling to unwrap, unwrap, please unwrap, she preserved, as always, this personal moment for later. Now there is quiet, now there is stillness, and she spotted the gift from her great-granddaughter. This one is her favorite of all, as she reminds her with her love for dance and rockabilly parties very much of her own youth. As an attentive, interested listener, she is also interested in her old stories, and the graying great-grandmother is happy to oblige. Through the tales and the indulgence in distant memories, she feels younger, and these hours have become some of the few joyful moments in her life.

Setting aside the card attached to the gift, she opens the small package, and a pretty bottle of Guerlain's Shalimar Cologne smiles at her. Shalimar is her perfume! Even as a young girl, she was enchanted by this dry, vanillic floral scent, with which she already felt very grown-up. Her friendly nature, the petticoats, pretty, wide skirts, and of course her scent made her the center of attention on the dance floor and desired at every party. Her old heart skips a little at these thoughts.

However, she did not know the Cologne of Shalimar. The first spritz shows, however, that it is Shalimar. This light yet intense Shalimar aroma convinced her immediately. The scent is, like in the original EdT, already very ladylike and yet comes across in its lightness as very girlish. The aroma of the distinctive floral blend captivates with its familiar charm but also appears very youthful and fresh. Without overwhelming the scent of the floral bouquet, a well-balanced, warm vanilla soon settles over the bouquet, leaving space for slightly smoky facets and a hint of wild leather. A slightly sweeter melt reminiscent of lip gloss holds a balsamic counterpoint. Over time, the vanilla forms a divinely fragrant duo with the tonka bean, which carries the heavenly, warm-spicy floral arrangement like on hands through a gently smoky, slightly sweet powdery mist. The delightful scent of this composition merges, just like in the original EdT, in the finale into a grand, harmonious whole.

The basic structure of the scent of Shalimar is well comparable in the Cologne, EdT, and EdP. The Cologne impresses especially with its lightness, and despite the retained intense fragrance, which more than compensates for the absence of the usual weight and depth with fresh liveliness, agility, and vitality. The friendly simplicity makes the Cologne more acceptable for broader use and, in a slightly different way than the original, also very seductive.

A few tears rolled down the old lady's wrinkled face, but her eyes were shining. The reason was not the wonderfully fragrant Cologne that was now filling her room, nor the warming thoughts with which the scent transported her back to her passionate youth. Her hands trembled a little as she read the card that accompanied the gift for the umpteenth time, “For my grandmother, who remains young at heart, a light scent of memories. Your grateful listener.”

Thank you very much, and I wish you all the best in the new year!

Ah, Shalimar...
Shalimar... What a beautiful name! I immediately think of Marlene Dietrich as a golden harem lady in "Kismet". Of wonderful, vibrant colors. Of coins jingling at the hips of belly dancers. And of course, of a scent that hovers above everything, for us Europeans the epitome of the Orient.

Well, so far so good. Unfortunately, Shalimar is none of that for me. Even after multiple tests of the Eau de Toilette, I found it simply - I’m really sorry, but I can’t describe it any other way - repulsive. What is supposed to be so great about it? But I don’t give up easily. Then I got the tip from a dear perfumista to try the Eau de Cologne. Well, I’ve been doing that for the past two days. I must say, it is definitely more wearable, but the magic still eludes me. All I perceive is a slightly musty powderiness. I can sense that there is more hidden beneath, but unfortunately, I can’t identify what it is. Still, I keep sniffing it and have already sprayed it several times.

My conclusion: I still can’t understand the love for this scent; however, it will definitely remain well packaged, cool, and dark in my care. And the next time I watch "Kismet," I’ll bring it out again, and who knows...

Involuntary Memory
She hadn't opened it in a long time. She hadn't even remembered that she still owned her old makeup box. But these days, she forgot so much.
It still smelled exactly like it did back then. The rising fragrance brought back memories she had long thought lost. Her red lipstick, her trademark back then. When had she actually stopped wearing red lips? The dense, opulent scent of her face powder. Her flawless skin with the few lost freckles under her eyes.
She had been beautiful. You could still see that, even though her lips were now pursed and her eyes hidden under wrinkles. Laughter lines. She had loved to laugh. She still loved to laugh.
She had bought a pair of suede gloves with her first salary and had worn them proudly. Where had the gloves ended up? They had been black, just like Audrey's in Breakfast at Tiffany's, she remembered that. Because she had loved and admired Audrey. Was she still alive?
She blinked and inhaled the powder scent again. She remembered smoking back then, when it wasn't dangerous, with her delicate fingers in Audrey's expensive suede gloves and a porcelain cigarette holder. Everywhere people had smoked, and the houses had been smoky back then. The light softer because it filtered through the veil of smoke. Now the light was colder. So much was colder now. Sterile. Except for the climate, which was getting warmer.
Suddenly, she remembered so much. So many faces that no longer existed.
She remembered Shalimar. Her fragrance. Would she still wear it now?
She hadn't smelled it on the streets in a long time. It probably didn't quite fit into today's world, she thought, where so much is better and yet some things are worse. She smiled and paused briefly.
So much was changing, constantly, all the time. But Shalimar was still beautiful, oh so beautiful.

of aparter lightness
I got to know and love "Shalimar" as an Eau de Parfum in 1991. Unlike many other fragrances, I have repeatedly repurchased it; the various shapes of the bottles testify to that.
But more on that elsewhere.

Three or four years ago, I managed to acquire "Shalimar" as an Eau de Cologne online.
However, it is still in the well-known "wing bottle" with the midnight blue cap.

In contrast to the Eau de Parfum, which is quite a hefty lady, the Eau de Cologne delights with its lightness.
This does not mean that lightness equates to emptiness or less depth; it just has a few less kilos on its frame.
Thus, I perceive an elegant slender lady (not with the notorious model measurements and protruding bones), who comes across as exceptionally nice and friendly, with the usual Parisian charm.

Right from the start, this mysterious floral blend, so typical of Guerlain, enchants here as well.
The Eau de Cologne also brings a hint of bergamot before the majestic flowers of the floral world make their appearance.
Iris, jasmine, and rose shine in the finest glow; not quite as overwhelming, not as dominant, but no less enjoyable: each has its special moment.
In the base, the iris reappears, this time a bit stronger; clearer and more independent without jasmine.
A very nice, not too sparing dose of warm vanilla scent, accompanied by the "oil directly from the garden of Venus" (opoponax), generously embraces the previous composition of noble flowers.
In this embrace, resembling a wide-cut coat, the sweetness of tonka bean skillfully nestles.

Even as an Eau de Cologne, "Shalimar" makes me smile; as is the case with so many of the fragrance creations from the house of Guerlain.
For that reason alone, I love it very much.

"Shalimar" as an Eau de Cologne is a practical everyday fragrance; here, longevity and sillage are not as pronounced as I am used to from the Eau de Parfum.
However, I can wear it more carefreely and frequently. The risk of possibly being too overwhelming does not arise here.
"Shalimar" Eau de Cologne is no less lovable than the noble Eau de Parfum lady.
It is lighter on its feet, but absolutely charming and very appealing!

Extra citrus and leather on this versión for spring. I love to wear it with informal clothes. It has a soft sillage but lasts all day long.

Citrus, leather, & vanilla. Softly smoky, unisex & old-fashioned. Layers really well with the licorice & cherry of La Petite Robe Noire

Like it much better than the extrait - more flowery, less spicy, softer in general. Downside: very soft sillage & only lasts for 1to max. 2h

Slightly lighter than the perfume and EdT, less balsamic, more powdery, with the iris standing out more.

I have a 1960s bottle of this and it's lovely. Less leather/animalics than the edp/edt, but it is fleeting.

Beautiful, green-vanilla powder classic with a fresh-citrusy start and a typical smoky Shalimar base. Simply timeless.

If the extrait is the perfume of a queen, then the cologne is that of the crown princess. Younger. More beautiful. Majestic and light-footed at the same time.
