The scent of sadness and loss
When it comes to "balance," there were some of the best perfumes in history. Like Azzaro Pour Homme, Chanel Egoiste, Terre D'Hermes, Amouage Dia... Such perfumes are so sophisticated that it is not possible to explain the scent just by mentioning the listed notes. It is already one scent that is well combined in itself.

And I would say that L'Homme Ideal Cologne is one of them. Maybe it's not the best masterpiece made by Guerlain's house, but it is true that perfumes as elaborated as this are really rare. Unfortunately, this artwork has almost not gained people's love and is slowly fading away. We may regret losing Ideal Cologne in the not too distant future...

The ideal cologne !
Guerlain is no longer the same house that it once was. Since 94, when the brand was acquired by LVMH, the fragrances started to take a different direction.

Truth to be told, they launched several great fragrances since that time (the Acqua Allegoria Pamplelune and Herba Fresca, the fantastic L'Instant de Guerlain or even Cuir Beluga) but the majority of their fragrances were just mass market impulses.

Since Jean Paul Guerlain left the house in 2010, and choose Thierry Wasser to replace him, Wasser is been working hard to keep the heritage of the brand alive and to bring some good ideas to the table. The Les Absolu D'Orient line is decent (Ambre Eternel is absolutely great and my favorite, by far) and Mon Guerlain is doing well but they needed a new masculine line. L'Homme ideal (2014).

The concept was to create a sweet-gourmand scent with a everlasting freshness, and the result was quite convincing. I like the tonka-guerlinade-amaretto accord of the fragrance but it lacks something in the overall idea. That's when the Cologne flanker appears.

This one took the original tonka-amaretto accord and added a juicy grapefruit note which lasts the entire lifetime of the fragrance. Not a usual thing. The beauty of this fragrance, at least for me, is that is a citric fragrance that actually lasts with the citric being in the front during the lifetime. Longlasting, super fresh and very alluring and even, should I say, sexy!

The result is quite fascinating. A grapefruit with an almond-ish impression and a vetiver-musk finale. Thierry Wasser improved the DNA of the original idea and he never reached the right tune again with the rest of the line. Unfortunately, and i don't know why, they discontinued this fragrance and replaced it with Cool, which is supposedly a minty version but fails completely.

The EDP is the one that is talked about but I never cared much. Basically a cherry-tonka version of the original. Good but not so masterfully done as the Cologne version.

Make me a favor and pick up a bottle (or two) of this fragrance because you will miss it when it disappear completely.

The Summer L'Homme Ideal Flanker
With the commertial success achieved after launching last years its next masculine pilar fragrance, it was already expected that a L'Homme Ideal flanker would be generated to keep the interest on the franchise. Generally, Guerlain flankers follow a kind of flankers' etiquette on which you always have to launch a fresher version and a more intense one from the original idea. This is the fresher one, possibly set to be launched on May to be spread during the spring/summer season, which seems to fit it well. But even that it's a Cologne version, it's not totally fresh for a tipical summer fragrance. Here, apparently the woody and ambery notes were toned down considerably which remove in parts the relationship impression with fragrances like One Million and Amen Flankers. The Almond liqueur impression is still on it, altough now it's enveloped on a very pleasant mixture of bergamot and what seems to me to be provençal hebrs. There is something slightly floral too, in a green way, that shows for some quick moments after the herbal and citrus opening, something that quickly mixes into the almond accord. It's curious that after many hours on skin, this fragrance shows me a green side that i haven't notice at first, something that reminds me of the great and saddly discontinued Gucci Envy Man. Even tough it looses intensity (which is already expected to a Cologne version), i think that this variation gains fresher, harmony and becomes more versatile. Unfortunately, is still not the version that makes L'Homme Ideal something that would separate Guerlain from what others have been doing.

What Makes a Man the Ideal Man?
Each culture has its own unique set of codes that determine essential and “what it means” to be a man. “The ideal Indian man is selfish and proud, for, in a world bound to a role defined by his caste, group, class, and family, this is what it means to be a man. The ideal man in China, on the other hand, is defined by the situations in which he finds himself: he observes, takes a position from others, and acts prudently and strategically to ensure that he does not attract undue attention to himself. In the United States, the ideal man is infused with a sense of righteous purpose that can be recognized through the American Constitution, the central importance of law and freedom, the civil rights movement, and so on - he is a man on a mission. who treats honestly; he is ready to act and accept the consequences. In the UK, the ideal man is individualistic and moderate: he protects his privacy and remains aloof in respect of kindness, good manners, and the rules of social commitment. It is difficult for him to relate to the bold assertiveness of Indian or American men, although with his friends he appreciates the opportunity for sarcastic jokes “—cit. Kantar Group and affiliates.

Having said that, what does Guerlain L’Homme Ideal Cologne consist of? Which stereotype of the ideal man was the famous French house inspired by? I came across this fragrance by accident. I was looking for another cologne, and I noticed this deal. The brand is not new to me, and I have had a few opportunities to try L’Homme Ideal and some of its flankers, and all of them are on my wish list. However, this Cologne flanker was unknown to me. Apart from the name that contains the word cologne, there is nothing like the classic hesperidated cologne. As soon as it comes into contact with my skin, it unfolds with a great blend of creamy nuttiness and citrus bitterness on one side and lovely sweetness on the other. There is a brilliant abundance of orange, bergamot, and grapefruit here. Not mentioned, I also have a morsel of spiciness, perhaps sparkling pink pepper., followed by a surprising touch of red, sanguine, passionate, bitter Campari. While not a clone, the opening reminds me of Allure Homme Édition Blanche Eau de Toilette Concentrée. The citrus is prominent at first, but I don’t find it piercing or annoying at all.

In the heart, the creaminess of the neroli mixes with the bitterness of the almond. You know, almond is the keynote presentation in the entire L’Homme Ideal line; the original and all flankers have this nutty note. The almond grows and grows in the heart and creates this creamy thickness that balances the citrus. And neroli brings floral and salty vibes. The main phase is all about creamy citrus and almond soap.

In drying, clean vetiver comes into play, and if you’ve gotten to read my past reviews, you know I love vetiver in all its facets. On my skin, this vetiver produces a kind of incense-like smoke, balsamic and smoky, which I don’t mind at all. I know there is no tobacco in the pyramid, but there is something about the mixture that seems to create a sweet, slightly smoky tobacco accord. The almond and orange blend is still pounding in the background and gives a sort of dustiness, creamier and less close to iris or violet. The soft musk enhances the feeling of laundry.

Homme Ideal Cologne is a fresher flanker than the original Ideal, of course. It retains the almond and tonka bean backbone of the original and refreshes the scent with plenty of citrus and neroli. It’s a bright, fresh aromatic scent with some creamy almond qualities. It is a great version that they should have never eliminated. As for the seasons, late spring, summer, and early autumn fit perfectly; it’s a daytime fragrance for casual wear and the office.

I based my review on a 50ml bottle I have owned since May 2021 (batch 7z01, production date 2017-12).

Lovely Almonds
Where do I start? Do I start with the perfect amount of citrus that are perfectly blended with the right amount of sweetness and the prefect account amount of spices or do I start with the buttery almond notes.... This fragrance is blended so well to give the wearer a special fragrance that goes so well for the warmer weather... if anyone know of a better smelling unique scent for the summer please let me in on the secret.. prefect for the summer!!

Nice citrus in the opening but the best for me in L'Homme Ideal Cologne is the drydown with creamy almond and cozy musk. Performance is bad.

Citrus + almond + creamy sweetness. Fantastic summer fragrance. Too bad though that it quickly becomes skin scent and disappears soon after.
