The Spirit of Habit Rouge
Being a big fan of the Habit Rouge lineup, Habit Rouge Spirit was a much anticipated release for me. It's safe to say that Delphine Jelk is effectively capturing the spirit (no pun intended) of Habit Rouge, all the while adding a new twist on this classic DNA that gives it a more modern flair. Upon first spray, this fragrance is undoubtedly a Habit Rouge flanker. The classic sweet-citrus opening of the EDT is present here, and the leathery-amber dry down is present here as well, honoring the 'red coats' the fragrance is named after. The in between is a bit different though, as this one land's itself into a sweeter, boozier and slightly more powdery side of things than the original. I'm getting a prominent note of oak and iris mixed in here, as well as a much more prominent vanilla, that I almost like more than the original. Here, the vanilla is sweeter, but not in a gourmand way, but rather a vanilla that envelops the wearer and gives the fragrance a very soft feel. It's really a wonderful take on the original, with just enough variation from the DNA to keep it interesting, but not enough to make people question if it's even Habit Rouge (which, unfortunately, most flankers fall victim to these days.)
As far as the marketing goes, I think the whole 'aged in oak barrels' thing is a bit of a farce, and don't even get me started on this being a collaboration with Hennessey. I do also think the notes that they're listing dramatically understate what this fragrance is all about. There is far more going on here than the notes care to let on, which is a good thing, but could potentially drive some of the more note-concerned fragrance wearers away. All of that aside though, this is a gorgeous composition by Delphine Jelk, and definitely a worthy entry into the storied Habit Rouge range. What a shame it's a limited edition!
